I emailed guest services to add the dining plan for my guests who arrive in June using DVC points....Here is the word for word response email...
Is this true?

"The Disney Dining Plan has been added to their reservation per your
request. Please be advised that $1,063.72 will be due upon check in. If
you would like to remove this plan from your reservation, please call
Member Services in advance to have this done. The Front Desk will not
be able to remove it upon arrival and you will be charged in full."

I was always under the impression you could cancel it at check in if you wanted to?

Nope, additions or cancelations need to be made at least 48 hours ahead of time.

So, if my guests cancel Dining at check in..... will DVC bill me for it? or will DVC just not allow them to check in? Or what would happen? How can they charge for something when there isn't anyone to charge?

The non-members using your points will be charged when they arrive. It's their responsibility to pay. I'd bet they will not be given their room IDs without paying for the plan.

They need to decide a week before they go and let you know so you can notify MS at least 2 days prior to them checking in.

Ultimately, you will be responsible for any charges they make to the room and do not pay. If they give a bad credit card, you will be responsible to pay for any room charges. If they damage the room, you are responsible.

I understand their message this way:

If they check-in and either don't have the money to pay for the dining plan or if they say "we decided against it", they will still be given their room keys. YOU will be charged the entire $1063.72 and won't be able to do anything else with your points until it is paid in full. It's your points and you are responsible for everything that happens when those points are in use.

This is the reason that I don't see ever renting points. There's just too much risk for too little money...

I don't believe they ever allowed to cancel the dining plan at the check-in. I remember that they used to allow to cancel prior to check in, meaning you have to cancel before arriving at the resort. But this has been changed (don't know when). Now you have to cancel 48 hours prior to arrival date.

$1063 is not small amount to pay. I hope that you/your guests sort out soon enough to take action, so that their vacation do not start on bad note...

I was told by 2 people at member services that this is not true. I was concerned about it since we are renting out points. They stated that they (DVC member services) aren't even informed of unpaid charges, that Disney handles it through their legal dept. Per DVC member services, the legal dept. goes after the person that gave the bad card. They said that nothing is noted on our accounts. As "Jodell" in member services said "The legal department doesn't tell us that Mr. Smith had renters that left charges unpaid" They even stated that the person renting is responsible for any room damages.

I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just stating what DVC member services told me last month. Anyone else have any experience with this? Now I'm really worried!

There was a member not too long ago who, when they went to make a new reservation, was told that there was a lien against their account for unpaid charges from their last stay. Evidently, the BIL had used a credit card that wasn't good anymore or had too many charges. They were charged the amount that was not collected from the BIL. It was straightened out, but they account was frozen for unpaid charges.

Wow, that's scary. I wonder why MS would tell me that they (nor the members) are never involved in unpaid room charges from a renter. When I made the reservation for our renter, I requested that they aren't allowed charging privileges. They said that they can not do that. That is when I said that I don't want to be held responsible and they were like "Oh no, we wouldn't make you responsible for someone else's charges! If they don't pay, Disney Legal will get involved with THEM, not YOU!" Not that it matters since the ressies are made, but I think I'll be calling MS tomorrow.

I haven't spent too much time around these boards, but is there often mention of members being stuck with a bill?

No, just the once that we've heard of, but Disney legal was not chasing down the member's brother for payment (fortunately, it was her brother and was just a mix up - he was happy to pay the bill).

we rented points this past Thanksgiving, we had the dining plan. One member of our party didn't come, so we took her off of the dining plan at check in. They said it was no problem, we expected to have to pay for her but we didn't have to. The member we rented points from wasn't charged for it either.
