DVC 3/16/20 update - all resorts closing 3/20/20

It’s official.

Temporary Updates to Our Cancellation Policy

To make the process of changing reservations as smooth as possible, Disney Vacation Club has lifted the close-in reservation cancellation restrictions and will return any of your Points back as Vacation Points or Reservation Points without placing them into holding. In the meantime, all Points banking rules remain in place. While we understand the banking policy might create some frustration, please realize that this rule is in place to ensure that the Membership as a whole avoids future inventory constraints. Borrowed Points returned due to a cancellation of a Disney Vacation Club Resort reservation will not be placed in holding and will be returned to the Use Year they were borrowed from.

Thank you! Does anyone know if it has to be via phone and requested? Or if it's just given if cancelled online?

I think a CM has to move them so it may not work online.

Hopefully they move the banked borrowed points back quickly. We'd like to reschedule our vacation but are still waiting for them to actually move. We called on Monday and cancelled and she said it takes 7-30 days.

Edit: Banked -> Borrowed

I almost cancelled mine, but realized it may only apply to "close-in" ie, less than 30 days on the reservation. I'll have to call later today to ask for clarification.

Do you mean take out of holding? Banked points are being returned to the current UY and following the same rules as always.

I'd like to know why they are keeping the Aulani Resort open.

Maybe because Hawaii is in a different situation and isn’t depending on the theme parks for its visitor base and the government there hasn’t put out guidelines for them to close

I got my cancellation and request to move banked borrowed points back to their original use year before they changed their policy. I was told that it takes 7-30 days to reflect on the account.

Do you mean borrowed points? Banked points would go backwards to be returned. I’m confused!

I called this morning, they said they're only moving borrowed points back if your reservation is in March. April and May is a wait and see..

They are unlikely to allow borrowed points to be returned from cancelled reservations that were scheduled to occur during periods the resorts are presumed to be open.

If the closure is extended, then it's reasonable to assume that the policy of returning borrowed points will be continued for the reservations that would have occurred during the closure.

Which I I think is reasonable. There just wasn't much clarity on the timeframes from anyone, so figured I'd report it.

Ok, so forgive me if this has been mentioned somewhere above, or if it's stated already and I just didn't get it, but... if a reservation for this past weekend was cancelled but the points used for it were expiring on 3/31 (which clearly isn't gonna be used), what happens to those points?

1) If those points were borrowed from 2020, then they can be returned to 2020 (you have to call)
2) If those points were from 2019, or banked from 2018. They expire as normal. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200.

Right now, they will expire. DVC has said they are looking into options to see if there is anything they can do, but can’t make any decisions...other than waiving holding and putting borrowed points back...until they have a better handle on how long this might impact DVC reservations.
