Hi there :wave2:
Just a quick question ... with this NEW no liquid allowed policy, how will it effect buying liquor from Duty free, or on board the plane??????
Cheers :joker:

I guess the duty free shop may be out of luck... but you'll still be able to buy it on the plane.

It would seem the rules will relax somewhat after a week or so.

I'll miss being able to take a water bottle, diet pepsi... or a big Timmies on the plane! :moped:

Hi there :wave2:
I certainly hope things relax a little over the next couple of weeks ... bottom line is, if someone is that set on blowing up a plane, they ARE going to find a way!!!! SAD but TRUE :sad2:
Cheers :joker:

one report said that the rule on liquids would be in effect for the next 72 hours, for sure and a decision would be made after regarding a change after that.

I have a feeling it's going to become a permanent security measure. It's been a hole in the security system for years and now everybody knows about it. The duty free at the airports are all closed. Tis a pity...we found some good deals at the Orlando airport last December. Oh well...

I'm just concerned about the possibility that no carry ons would be allowed at all at some point in air travel. It's already in the UK right now albeit it may be for the time being... I don't know how those people are coping with it.

I've already decided not to take my laptop to Anaheim with me next week. If they change the rules again while I'm there, I don't want to be stuck at LAX with my laptop and wondering how to get it home without checking it in teh luggage. And then there's my camera equipment. <sigh> I was going to bring my camera and my video camera....I'll probably only end up bringing one now rather than load myself down with "suspicious" electronics.

I don't think they'll eliminate duty free alcohol on planes - it's not like you have it in your possession to tamper with it like (according to ABC) the containers of sports drink that were involved in this plot.

Even if they thought there was a risk of someone igniting their bottle of overproof alcohol, all they have to do is start giving it to passengers when they disembark instead of when they get on the plane.

With all the $$ that the duty free shops make I doubt that it will be a permanent measure. Perhaps you wont actually recieve the items until your leaving the plane. There is still the border duty free shops too, they can still sell cheap booze :)

When traveling to FLA I use to pick up a 1.5 liter bottle of Crown Royal from duty free for around $22 USD per bottle, I found in FLA that you can purchase the same bottle for the same price and even $1-$2 less at ABC liquor stores. It will save you from having to carry the bottle and now you won’t have to deal with security. I did find that the more expensive Covarsier and Hennessey were better deals at duty free though.

I have a feeling they will start letting you bring things on that you have purchased after passing through security and that the terminals will use special stamps on your product to prove that it was purchased in the terminal.

We almost never fly from Canada so we shop at the duty-free when crossing the border by car. I will be most effected by no juice for my preschooler. When he wants a drink, he wants it now. LOLThankfully, we had already planned to drive down in April.

Does anyone know how much you have to pay for duty if you are over the "duty-free" allowable amount?

My husband found it somewhere on line at it wasn't very much, but I don't remember how much exactly.

He's flown and we've driven with more (a litre or two more) than the duty free amount several times, declared it and didn't have to pay. Some day we'll get dinged, but thus far it looks like it's too much of a pain for the crossing guard to bother figuring it out. I've probably cursed myself now for our trip to Boston next week

I'll second the poster who said duty-free is not always the way to go to get the best price or selection. The duty-free store in Calais, for example, has a really small selection and their prices are higher than the New Hampshire liquor store. He found the same thing in North Carolina with bourbon.

When we came back from our Disney Cruise, we found some incredible deals on the islands for things like Baja Rosa $7/Litre or Crown Royal (imported from Canada) but I can't remember the price right now. I was thinking at the time that it would have been nice to bring some back, but we wanted to bring some local Guava rum instead. It would still take quite a bit of duty taxes on the Baja Rosa to bring it anywhere close to what it costs here.

Does anyone know of somewhere online that would list the duty costs? I've looked around but no luck yet. :confused3

I heard on the news the other night that at YYZ there have been massive lay-offs at 12 of the duty free shops.

read in the Wpg free press today that they were easing some of the restrictions to allow duty free on flights to usa..but i didn't pay much attention as we don't plan on buying..
