Dust first or Vaccuum first?

I know this is quite off topic for a budget discussion boards but I know I can count on you people for good responses. The argument is this....is it better to dust first then vaccuum or vaccuum then dust? Reason I ask is that my DH and I are debating this very question so I thought getting a poll on what others do would prove to him that I am right.

I always do my floors last so I dust first. We were taught to clean from top to bottom.

My grandmother taught me that you always start from the top and work down. First, check for anything like cobwebs in corners and high windows, dust photo and pictures on wall, then dust furniture and finally vacuum. Now I will be a great grandmother next year. My how time flies!

Yes Top to bottom cleaning. Same thing in the kitchen - start with countertops and end with floors (then any crumbs or anything that falls off the counter will be vacuumed/swept up off the floor).

Definitely dust first and then vacuum. I always clean from the top down, so that floors and vacuuming are the very last thing I do. You know, gravity and all that...

Vacuum then dust. First of all you can use the vacuum to dust your tv, lamp shades, etc. ( obviously by using the attachment ). I think the vacuum does kick up dust so after all vacuuming is done, anything not vacuumed can then be dusted. That's my two cents.

It really depends on the vacuum you use. A hepa or central vac will remove the dust so dust first. Cheap vacuums put dust in the air so go to the store and get a hepa or the like vacuum and then dust first.

My DH and I had this "discussion" for several years...I then found something either in Consumer Reports, Good Housekeeping, or This Old House mag that stated to Dust First. Since it was in PRINT...I won!
However, since he was willing to do both I did not argue to much. I did however point out that some of the areas that had been dusted AFTER vacumig dropped bits of the dust on our dark green carpet, and he had to re-vacum to get it up...hehehe, won that way also...
And finally, HIS Mother agreeded with me.
Really, as long as I don't have to do it, I don't really care!

That is what I do. I have a nice little brush attachment so nothing really flies around.

Then I actually vacuum the floor after.

This is me
I will run a damp cloth over things that can't be reached with Vacuum. But most things can be vacuumed.

Aha! My parents had this argument many moons ago. Dad vacuumed, then dusted. Mom told him he should have done it the other way. Dad said if Mom didn't like the way he did it, he'd never do it again. And he didn't. Convenient way of getting out of housecleaning, if you ask me.

Never thought of that! I dust first then vacuum. I bought a hepa filtered vacuum bc I have a dog so no dust gets tossed up but any vacuum will do perfect. (hepa vacuum was a compromise I wanted a dog and family didn't want pet dander)

i agree with yer dad. I tell my family 'if it bothers you enough to complain about it, then get up and do it yourself'. They seemed to develop a higher tolerance for the way I do things.

I always vaccum last thing before mopping floors an yes I even vaccum my hard floors gets lots of the fine dirt up the broom tends to miss.
