If anyone out there is looking for a great day in Cozumel, check into the Dune Buggy rentals from Cozumel Homes. It was absolutely the best day of the trip!!! There were just two of us that signed up from DCL (My husband and I) but we were pleasantly suprised at the other 10 or so pwople from other ships. The meeting place is right off of the end of the Dock that the Magic is at. We found it easily and within a half hour we were all asked to pick a buggie! My husband and I got the Purple one! It was really fun looking! Be sure that if you expect to drive that you know how to drive stick. There was a young couple that wanted to drive their own, but neither had and manual transmission experience and therefor were put into the back of a Buggy of an older couple who went relatively slow. We (6 buggies total) took off through the town following our guide in his buggy. We drove through town and everyone let us go in front of them in order to keep the group together. Very courteous drivers. We cruised through the town for about 10 minutes which was great seeing the "Back side of things". Nicely kept town for Mexico. We then hit a long blacktop road that cut straight across the island to the other side. Took about a good 20 minutes of driving. We passed a few roadside stands that had gorgeous hammocks for $10 US and Mexican Bankets for $2 US. Alas, my husband wouldn't stop for fear we'd lose the group AND I'd buy too much stuff.
We finally reached the ocean on the other side of the island and made a sharp left into the brush. We traveled along some bumpy, winding , jungley, brushy, cactusy sand roads. It was a blast. These buggies can handle these bumps at a high rate of speed and we really went flying a few times! We drove for about an hour and a half up the coast where there was gorgeous scenery and beautiful uninhabited stretches of beach (though some was trash ridden). We stopped at a public beach for a homemade lunch (made right there by our driver) and some of the best snorkeling I've done. The swim to the snorkelling was long (about 300 yds out), but easy. We finally hit the reef and the water was about 20-30 ft. deep, but the coral came up to the surface. I would have loved to be in scuba gear as there were caves and paths through the coral. We swam for about an hour and saw some great stuff. Then back to the beach where luch was waiting. Oh, I forgot to mention they fill each of your buggies with as much soda, beer and water along with ice that it can hold (way more than enough). And at every stop, "Nother Beer?, Nother Beer?" They fed us well.
Continued on to some Mayan ruins and our guides stopped to pick up a Boa Contrictor they saw on the path. We got to hold it and get some great photos. Then back to the paths and back to town. On the way back, the skys opened up and it downpoured! It was absolutely flooded in town and we got to drive those buggies through 2-3 ft standing water. It was so much fun! Perfect ending to a great fun day.
If anyone out there is looking for something off the beaten path and want to have a greeat day seeing more of Cozumel than the usual beaches, let me know, I can get you the info. It was $89 per person for everything. We were back in town at around 5 pm which gave us plenty of time to go back to the ship, change, and hit Charlos & Charlies!
Great Day!!!
