Dumb Grilled Cheese Question

This is a really stupid question, but....when I make grilled cheese, I use 1 pan. Can only fit 2 sandwiches in. Make both DDs their sandwiches, then make the 2nd batch in the same pan. Problem is, the 2nd batch, the bread gets browned quicker cuz the pan is really hot already, and in order to get the cheese melted, the bread is almost burnt. Now, I know I could use 2 pans, but thats more dishes and mess to clean up. Anyone else have this problem? Any solution other than 2 pans?

take out :rotfl2:

Turn the heat down lower. It will take longer, but it won't burn on the outside when you make the second ones.

I use one of those square flat thingies.......I put all four pieces of bread down that is already buttered.....then put the cheese on top of that.......I butter the top bread while it is sitting on the counter and put it on the top when it is time to turn it over......four sandwiches that way......yummy sounds good for lunch too

I like them better from a pan, but if I have more than 2 to make, I do mine in the oven.

Either turn the heat down, or do them on a cookie sheet in the oven.

To do them on a cookie sheet turn the oven to 400, butter all the slices of bread, and put them butter side down on the cookie sheet. Put cheese on half (or cheese on all if you like them really cheesy) and pop them in the oven. Start checking on them in 5 minutes--every oven is different. They're done when the cheese is melting and/or slightly puffy.

I make our grilled cheese on our George Foreman. We have the huge 'manly man' sized one and I can make 8 sandwiches at a time if I need to. :thumbsup2

I use the same thing, a nice flat griddle. I butter the bread, put two slices of cheese on each piece, turn the heat down low, when ready to flip but the top breads on (already buttered) and cook the other side on low. I don't use high heat, it cooks the bread too fast and the cheese doesn't melt good then.

I get around that by microwaving the sandwiches to melt the cheese a bit. Then I grill them in the pan. That way, the cheese is melted and the bread is perfectly toasted.

If you lay a piece of foil over the top of the pan, but not so it's touching anything, it will help to melt the cheese

You know what you do? You take the pan off the heat for a few minutes and let it cool.
That is what I do.

MMMMM!!!! Grilled cheese sandwiches.

And, they are just not the same from the oven. Have to be made in a hot pan or some type of griddle/grill.

Okay, first, yes you do have to be sure to not have your stove set to high.

But, the real problem may be the butter.... Butter burns easily! The second set of sandwiches will get the burning butter. It is really simple, you can just take your pan off the stove for a second, and wipe out the butter left over from the first sandwiches. The second batch will be perfect!

Just lower the heat for the second batch, or like posted above, taking the pan off the burner for a minute is a good idea too.

I bought a large griddle pan that can fit 4 sandwich's just for this reason! :)

Use a griddle and cook over medium-low heat (@4-5 out of 10).

And have you ever experimented with your grilled cheese? Try adding tomato sometime (if you like tomato). Or (and this sounds really disgusting, I know) a thin layer of miracle whip on the inside. It adds a tiny zing.

Anyone else have really good additions they'd like to share?

My DD likes mustard inside of hers before it cooks. Adds a kick, too.

Thats why I use an iron to make grilled cheese sandwiches. :rotfl2: Make sure you don't add steam so it won't make your sandwiches soggy. Works great! BTW, I do have a separate iron just for sandwiches. :thumbsup2

The secret to perfect grilled cheese is low heat.
I sometimes put guacamole and thinly sliced cucumbers in mine. Sounds weird but it's really good!

I love grilled cheese and BACON samiches!

Didn't we all learn in elementary school that there is no such thing as a dumb grilled cheese sandwich question? :teacher:
