OK, I gave the simplified description. Here's the more detailed description. Pre-eclampsia is caused by free radicals generated from the placenta. The placenta develops both from the uterus and the developing embryo. The free radicals then go on to oxidize angiotensinogen. Oxidized angiotensinogen causes the release of angiotensins which cause the high blood pressure which is characteristic of pre-eclampsia. This explanation was based on a study at Cambridge University published in Nature in October, 2010
