Due to cold weather -35 no school Monday and Tuesday

SE Louisiana here - right above New Orleans. Schools out today and tomorrow, Nothing happening now, just cold. Not that I am complaining about having a day off but I am a substitute teacher and if I dont work, I dont get paid. We were off last Friday and these 2 days so 3 days without pay for me is easing up on $900. Not good when I have a Disney trip planned! LOL!

The Houston local news is telling us that something is actually happening in LA, unlike here in Houston! I was envisioning y'all in a winter wonderland!! I sub once or twice a week at my boys' school, too, but they only pay subs $80 a day. It would take me quite a while to be out $900!! Hoping you get back to work soon!

I'm so sick of this extreme cold. We live in the country with propane heat. With the long lasting cold snap (-35C), the demand and therefore costs for propane have skyrocketed. The last two months alone cost us $1000. That's ridiculous!!

How is that not price goudging.

We're in Southern Ontario. Wow..-28:crazy2:. You know I see so many kids at the bus stop without proper winter gear on. I can't imagine sending them out in those temps. I know it's up to the parents, but it appears many of them don't always check what the kids put on before leaving the house, or don't care.:(. I always have extra gloves in my pocket for anyone who forgot theirs and I've handed them out quite a few times. Thank goodness for the dollar store!

Or don't fight that battle. Around here, no self-respecting teen boy will be seen in a winter jacket. Varsity jackets are, of course, acceptable. Otherwise it is just hoodies, no matter how cold it gets. :scratchin

My DD went out the other day in just her northface. I told her to put on a coat and she told me she didn't have one. I mentioned 2 or 3 that I had bought her and she wrinkled her nose and had a reason not to wear each. I told her to just freeze if thats what she wanted to do. At 17, I have bigger things to fight with her about.

I'm sitting here in school, just north of Bangor, ME. How crazy is it that we are having cold but manageable weather (currently 14F but -8F with the wind chill) while you guys in the south are struggling to stay warm? We have had ONE DAY off for weather this year. I know I'll be happy to be out of school in early June, but right now I'd LOVE to have a snow day- the kids are starting to get cabin fever from having indoor recess for so many consecutive days (we don't go outside if it's below 10F, either air temp or wind chill).

Propane is becoming another international commodity. Propane exports are not regulated in the US and they are more than doubling every year. Exports were 56,000 barrels in 2011, 189,000 barrels in 2012 and 408,00 barrels in 2013. That reduces the supply here in the US so they can charge more to everyone.

Many midwest governors have declared a state of emergency and have lifted safety rules for propane truck drivers. I'm not sure that I would want to be on a snowy and icy highway with a propane driver who is now driving longer hours.

We got a dusting over night and now schools are closed again today in northern VA. As of today, we will have to make up school hours. My husband is supposed to fly home today. I hope he can. I'm ready for spring.

Sorry I should have clarified. These are the two bus stops for the elementary kids. I too have a 16, almost 17 year old. Kids that age refusing to dress properly is a whole different story, and I agree, not a battle I am willing to fight.:headache:
