Those of us who have suffered the old Smith Terminal will no longer have to deal with that disgusting place in mid September. The new terminal will have an open house on Saturday, Sept 6. Radio Disney will be there! You can register to attend online.

I am so excited to be able to fly SWA from a clean, spankin new location!!!

I've been through Northwest's terminal at DTW many times, it's very nice. Is the replacement for Smith connected to this terminal?

No, it is not connected to McNamara Terminal, which is midfield. This new one is built where the OLD NWA terminal used to be.

Thank goodness!

My Ph.D. advisor grew up in India. Shortly after I took the Michigan job, he came to give a talk. He flew from PIT, which at the time was still a USAir hub. This was before 9/11, so I went to pick him up at his gate. On our way out, he looked at me and said, "You know, Brian, we have better airports in India."

I didn't doubt him for a second.

NW, DL, CO, and the any routes that have to clear customs stateside on return fly out of Midfield. Most of the rest are out of Smith, though there are a few charters at Berry (which is even worse than Smith.)

Do you know what other Airlines will be flying out of the new terminal?

Air Canada, American, AirTran, Frontier, Lufthansa, Royal Jordanian, SWA, Spirit, United, US Air, USA 3000 and charters.

Hope that helps!

There will be an open house: From the site at http://www.airportopenhouse.com/

North Terminal at Detroit Metro Airport. Don’t miss an exclusive preview of the
newest airport terminal in the country, as it spreads its wings during
The North Terminal Open House."

"On Saturday, September 6, from 1-5 p.m., come down for a FREE afternoon
of fun with the whole family. Join us as Radio Disney provides live entertainment.
Get in on games, crafts, giveaways and the chance to win a planeload of gas!"

There will also be a VIP and charity event: From the site at http://www.airportpreview.com/
"As the sun sets on the Smith and Berry terminals, the curtains rise on the all-new North
Terminal at Detroit Metro Airport. Don't miss an exclusive preview of the newest airport
terminal in the country, as it spreads its wings during the North Terminal Preview."

"Friday, September 5 from 7-11 p.m., come for an evening of elegance, music and the
first preview of the new North Terminal."

What exciting news. I had no idea it was going to open so soon. I will miss Smith. It was only five steps from the check in to the airplane.

They just mentioned this on WWJ this morning. It makes me so happy to know that I won't have to travel through that miserable- and a little scary- pit any more. It also makes me wish that I'd gone with a North Terminal airline for an upcoming trip to Jacksonville. I have to wait an extra three weeks to fly out of the new terminal! Oh, well, I guess the McNamara light show tunnel to the Delta gates will just have to do until then.

LOL I have a flight on NWA in a month and I almost wish I could fly out of the new one, too. However, I do have a flight on SWA in December (luv those RR tickets), so I can experience it then. I am signed up to go to the Open House on the 6th.

I've got McNamara on Oct. 3 and North on Oct. 22. I'll just keep telling myself that the extra 19 days will give them more time to works out any bugs. I signed up for the open house, too. I feel like I should wear a lime green Mickey head!

After all the delays and years of promises--it is finally going to open!

Sadly, it seems as if NWA has had the better flight deals for our trips. Unless Spirit gets with the program and lightens up on the cost, we probably won't be seeing the new terminal any time soon. :sad2: Guess we'll see how it all plays out, but I am thrilled that the new terminal is finally complete--Smith was such an unbelievable eyesore. :scared:
