DH is at the 24 hour animal hospital right now. About 9:30 I noticed Cherokee wasn't acting quiet right and kind of keeping weight off his right front paw. We were checking him over, thought maybe his paw was sore or something. Then DH said it was swollen. Upon further inspection I notice two puncture wounds on the top of his paw and know immediately.....snake bite. It had to be a viper, either a copperhead or rattler.....remember that thread about the one we killed a few weeks ago.

We called the hospital and they said bring him in. He's a young dog.....10 months old.....but a good size and very strong.

Someone please tell me he is going to be okay.:sad1:

I don't understand why does it have to be a viper?

But try not to worry. I don't know anything about snake bites, but I can't help but think that if it was too dangerous, the effects would have been much more serious immediately.

You puppy has my good thoughts though for a quick recovery.

Could clearly see two puncture marks and it's what's prevalent in our area.

Thanks for the good thoughts.

One of my dog's(children) had gotten bitten by a copperhead about two years ago.Honey took a bite in the neck...she saved me from getting bit...i was pulling weeds and she jumped infront of where i was pulling weeds...I was there i saw it and heard her yelp.... To make a long story short...I had a friend who is a vet and came over and gave her a couple of shot's...two day's latter good as new! i hope it works out for you...you can never tell when it comes to pet's and snake bites.

They sent DH home about 12:30 last night. Wanted to keep Cherokee overnight. DH said when he went back to see him before he left he (Cherokee) tried to get up and go with him. So hopefully the snake didn't pump a lot of venom in him. 12:30 would have been at least 3 hours since bite......I'd think if it was going to get worse it would have by this point. DH also said that his paw hadn't swollen beyond what it was when we discovered the bite. We haven't heard anything during the night so I'm hoping no news is good news and he is just resting and recovering.

Funny thing.......I noticed two small blisters on my thumb, I'm pretty sure it's where I touched the bite......I wonder if there was venom on the skin/coat that has caused this?

Cherokee is a Siberian Husky in case you are wondering.

DH just called, he spoke with vet. They said he is doing really good, the swelling has gone down.

Thank you all so much for your well wishes for our big puppy.

Thats great news! Glad your dog is doing so well and I hope he gets to come home soon!

Sounds like it must have been a copperhead.

I worked in a vet clinic for ten years. I can only remember seeing one rattlesnake bite - the owners saw it happen and rushed the dog straight to the clinic. We had to amputate the leg immediately. It was horribly swollen and discolored. The good news, the dog did great post op.

DH just called, he went by the hospital to see him on his lunch break. He was feeling much better and all over DH for loving & petting. Vet said copperhead. DH had to put down a $400 deposit last night.....balance due above that was $2 and change.

Awww I hope he gets better soon. Does he get to come home or are they keeping his for observation still?

Our black lab has been bitten 2 different times by copperheads and had no problems at all except for the swelling. And my son was bitten on the leg by a copperhead when my son was 12 years old. He spent 2 days in the hospital and recovered fine also.

And in case anyone wonders why all the bites, we lived on a farm with lots of pasture land in South Texas. Snakes are just a part of life there.

He gets to come home today. DH will pick him up when he leaves work.

AWww yay! Poor puppeh, it's so nice to hear a happy ending! :goodvibes

Cherokee got to come home yesterday. He is still limping a little but you can tell he feels much better. They sent him home with an antibiotic pill and a pain pill, he gets both 3 times a day. Do you know how hard it is to get a dog to take a pill? And I thought getting kids to take medicine was bad.;)

so glad to hear he is doing better!! Poor puppy....
