Glad your son is OK. But I have to wonder too...what good does a 9am lunch do - only a couple hours after breakfast and a LONG way from dinner.

My DS11 has "lunch" at 10:20. But his school day is 7:25-2:15. But still....

Doors can be locked so no one can get *in*, but people inside can still get *out*. The OP's DS & other students are under the impression that the doors are locked so no one can get out of the cafeteria. And if the doors are electric/electronic, if the power goes out, will they work at all?

How scary! I will keep my eyes open to the local news and see if they cover it later.

As for the door situation, it is possible that the doors are magnetically held shut/open. This is done by electrical operations. If the power were to go out, the doors would release since the magnets would not be operating. The same is true if a fire alarm were to go off. The system is set to release the doors so people can get out of the building.

we're back,got DS...he is a bit shaken. Said no one knew anything that was going on. One boys mom works at the other campus and he was trying to get info that way..turns out is was an airsoft gun, some students saw 3 boys trying to load it in a bathroom. the Police dogs were everywhere and everyones belongings/lockers/purses/backpaks were all gone thru and police escorts for bathroom were theonly ones allwed to go anywhere.
DS said he tried to text his Sister,( who graduated last year) to talk to her, but she didn't answer so he was feeling a little lst so to say.
wow...what a scary situation...DS said amny kids were hysterical and just plain scared. The school is going to have counselors on hand. Like I said, amny have siblings at NIU or know somone who attended/attends there, so this is a very real scare for the kids...ALL kids. Thanks for allthe good thoughts...and yes, 9 am lunch. School starts at 7:20 , first lunch is at 9. Makes for a VERY long day, especially when math is your last class.
