DS high school on lock down!

Got a call this a.m. that the high school is in lock down...no other info, butit was also on the radio news so I was obviously concerned! was just coming to post it here and got a call that DS campus ( freshman is seperate from main building)lock down is lifted, but the main campus across the street is still under lock down. There was a bomb threat yesterday...can't get much info, but this is frightening...whether or not it is just a joke. I know my DS must be pretty rattled right now. Lock down occured when he was in lunch ( yes, 9 am lunch) and he has said that is the LAST place he would want to be if anything happened because it is so crowded and open and the doors to the outside are locked so kids can't leave..my DD's biggest fear is a school shooting as well...when going thru orientation for college, she stressed that to the administration..so sad for kids today..that this is a everday worry/fear.

My children's elem school has been on lock down twice. One was a high speed chase so all schools on this road were on lock down. The other was another high speed chase, but the driver fled on foot and had a gun. Turned out to be a 16 year old punk but he was caught before getting close to the school. Yes, it is scary.

To be sure the locks would be released if there was a fire. But for now, aren't they keeping something from the outside getting in?

it's for both, there are teacher/lunch monitors there, and the main reason is to keep kids from goofing off and trying to get out, and maybe it is what the kids "think"? You are right, it would be in code violation, but DS is adamant about it so the kids , at least mine, THINK the doors are locked...at any rate lord knows how things will be after this. A friend called and heard that a gun is involved, not sure HOW she got that info, what there is to it...the cops are swrming it...I just feel so awful for the kids/staff, everyone!

DS was able to text me...yeah, he's freaked out...he said that it is serious...something is going on for sure at the main campus, but can't text again, they are going to start their classes...these poor kids! Many families here attend/attended NIU and last years shooting rocked our community...this is so upsetting!
I keep reading other threads out of nervousness!

i understand where you are comming from my kids school was on lock down last year twice in the same week once a kid got mad at a teacher and torched her car - the the same kid came up there with a gun thank GOD he didn't make it inside right now your son is ok he text you so keep that in mind

a gun was found in the Science wing....apparently it is a BB gun, however, the search is continuing. ABC just gave us a quick update.

got another update that Dogs are being used as well....the gun apparently is a seperate incident form the bomb threat note found yesterday....

OH THANK GOD!! It was just a BB gun.
I was a senior in highschool when the JR high in my town had one of the first school shootings. My brother in law was in the classroom next to where Barry was shooting. So I can only imagine your panic.

I hope everything is ok.

DS just texted to come get him...he is ok physically, they were told not a BB gun....not sure what to believe! Off to go and get him!

Hugs to you. My 9 year old daughter's school was on lock down last week. There was an armed bank robbery right in the area. I know how you are feeling. I was super nervous until she came home. Unfortunately the gunman has not been caught. On the positive side though the kids stayed very cool throughout. My daughter was even mad that her clarinet lesson got cancelled because they had to stay in their classrooms.

Glad your son is OK. But I have to wonder too...what good does a 9am lunch do - only a couple hours after breakfast and a LONG way from dinner.

Doors can be locked so no one can get *in*, but people inside can still get *out*. The OP's DS & other students are under the impression that the doors are locked so no one can get out of the cafeteria. And if the doors are electric/electronic, if the power goes out, will they work at all?
