DS getting braces right before trip?

What is he getting the braces for? They had to pull my teeth out, and when I first go the braces I couldn't fully shut my teeth together for weeks. It made it hard to eat and limited my food.

I would reschedule. Regardless of when he gets them but especially if it's before Disney, I would buy a "kanka" stick or something similar. I never had braces but my brother does right now and ever since getting them, he's gotten canker sores constantly. Makes it very hard to eat.

I got braces when I was 13. Course that was many years ago, but I remember it being very painful especially in the beginning, and every time I went back to orthodontist for adjustments.

Yes, the spacers were painful!!!

Also, the possible need for any attention or adjustments, etc. to the braces, right after they are first put on, that could be an issue as well.

I would not consider the input of anyone who has not had braces on their own teeth.
Just because somebody else's kid(s) 'seemed to do fine'... Nope....
Very good points.

This thread is bringing back painful (literally) memories! I am jumping in the bandwagon to say wait. I usually had to eat exclusively soft foods for several days after an adjustment (so assuming the same after initially getting them every though I can't recall exactly that first time). It would stink to be in Disney and not be able to eat all those goodies! Plus I definitely remember being stabbed by wires and needing a lot of wax.

I'd wait. I had braces as an adult and the first few days I thought I would be spitting out pieces of tongue my mouth felt so raw. Even later in the treatment. every time I had them tighten, they hurt a little for a day or two.

Plus the concern of don't eat this or that. I had a embarrassing but now funny event with food. Cub scout picnic, eating hot dogs and drinking red punch. Unknown to me the roll had gotten stuck in the braces and the punch dyed it all red. I must have looked lovely.

Adult orthodontic treatment is a very different animal. Quite often adult treatment takes much longer as well.

I don't think it is so much the food (they have to get used to the restrictions anyway, and besides, if he's anything like my DS, he will find a way to eat his favorite things regardless ;) ) or the pressure/pain they feel at the beginning. Tylenol or Advil will take care of that.

What I would be concerned about is, sometimes it takes a trial run or two before the braces "fit" - it's not an exact science and there have been times over the course of DS's treatment where the orthodontist tightened the wires a little too much and the bracket kept popping off, or they didn't cut down the wire enough and it was cutting DS's cheeks up. Sometimes wax would help until I could get him back to the office, sometimes the wax would just fall off and not help at all.

Especially in the beginning before the patient knows what "feels right" and doesn't feel right, you might end up running back to the office once or twice.

I'd personally hold off for the month. It's going to take a long time anyway - you don't even want to know all of the delays we have had with DS. He was supposed to get his off 18 months ago, and he still has them on. 1 month at the beginning isn't going to matter at all.

I would reschedule. When DS got his, we made a couple trips back that first couple weeks till we had a few things adjusted. Not a fun thought if you are many hours away on vacation. His pain was pretty much limited to 3-4 days, but it takes a bit of time to figure out how to comfortably and easily eat some foods.

What's a few weeks? Wait until you get back.

Apparently I had an amazing orthodontist. I had a horrible mouth of teeth, so bad that they had to use a heat activated wire when they first put my braces on, because that was pliable, and standard wires weren't. I got my braces 2 days after Christmas, because my parents got a substantial ($300?) discount if I got them during the not-so-busy week between Christmas and New Years. With 2 of us in orthodontia at the same time, we got a "suck it up buttercup", and spent some quality time at the orthodontist office that week.

I was told my pain would be worse than typical because of the heat activated wire. By day 3, I was back to completely solid foods. Never once, in over 2 years of treatment did I have a bracket pop off. Granted, I did not have bands on the back molars, because my molars weren't big enough, so I had special brackets instead, but my need for wax was minimal, and usually involved the hooks that were used for elastics later on. Only once did my wire need to be readjusted because it was sticking out too far. I went to Disney a year into braces treatment, and didn't need to change my eating habits. But I can't eat caramel apples (caramel, yes...biting into apples no) without braces because of an old tooth injury/repair, so I could see that being a necessary change for some. I had braces 1998-2001. I don't consider myself to have a high pain tolerance, but they just weren't that bad. But...everyone is different.

I have braces on right now and I would wait until after you return. His teeth and jaw will be sore, the spacers between the molars before hand were worse than the braces. My teeth hurt for a couple of days after having an adjustment/ wire change. I'd let him enjoy Disney unrestricted by braces.
