My 16 year old DS was goofing around at our church youth cookout last night and fell and broke his humerus just below the "ball" that fits into the shoulder joint. The ER doc conferred with the ortho doc via computer sharing of x-rays and phone, and they don't think he'll need surgery. We're following up with an excellent orthopedic doc who specializes in upper extremity injuries on Monday.

Bless DS's heart, he never shed a tear, although he almost lost consciousness from the pain when it happened, and hasn't complained once..only telling me he needs a pain pill occasionally. His biggest concern is about our WDW trip that's in 6 weeks!! :sad2:

Poor kid! I hope he isn't in much pain and that he heals well. Hoping you are doing ok too mom.

If they cast it, get a waterproof cast for WDW. So sorry!

Thanks! The break is up too high to cast. Right now they have it in a sling that's got his arm strapped to his chest and immobilized. He broke the same arm only a few centimeters down from this spot playing football in fourth grade. Six weeks in a sling + Active 10 year old boy = Gray hair for mom!!

Bless his heart-bone! I know that had to hurt. Christian had the same injury when he was about 13--fell down the stair. Never cried the first time. He did not need surgery, but he had his right arm immobilized for 10 weeks. Oh, yes, let the fun begin...

Hopefully your son will be well enough to manage WDW in 6 weeks. Pixy-dust to him pixiedust:

My son broke his elbow years ago and was not able to have it cast. It really is so hard not to hover and worry that someone is going to hurt it for him again.

I hope you have a great trip and he recovers quickly! pixiedust:

Thank you all! He's tough. . .still no complaining at all, but he does ask for a pain pill occasionally. Getting a shirt on and off is tricky. Taking the sling off made him light headed! We have a spare, so he's using one sling in the shower and the other during the day.

We're keeping the Disney trip date the same unless we absolutely have to change it. DH is a pastor, and DS is in marching band, so between church trips, VBS, and marching band camp in late July, there's no good time to reschedule the trip.

Ugh, I'm so sorry!!

He should be okay for your trip. Regardless, sending lots of healing pixiedust! pixiedust:
