Anyone have a clue what a drug test, like one for an employer and/or a chronic pain office actually cost truly cost?

Depends what they are screening for. I have a friend who has a trucking company and he pays $50-300 depending what the test is for. He uses quest.

Ours cost $50 - hundreds depending on what drugs we wish to test for plus about $100 for our own admin cost to set the test up, review results.

if you are the one taking the test, the employer should pay for it as part of the screening and the health insurance should pay for it if the doctor orders it

Yes, but depending on your employment clause if you get terminated in X number of days you may be required to cover the cost of up to balance of your last check. I believe the OP recently got a new job but we can only speculate the reason they are asking.

Guess it depends on the health insurance. My Doctor "accidentally" ordered a drug test for me, clicked the wrong box on the computer. When I got to the lab THEY warned me that insurance does not pay for drug tests and that if I had the test , I would have to pay for it out of pocket.

they need to use the right diagnosis code so the test is covered (with any medical test). if you needed a drug test (because you are on pain meds, etc), the insurance will cover it.

Your insurance flagged you because you had no indication for the test and not the right diagnosis. That happens with most tests (I am a MD, so I see this all the time).

Never got to the insurance company. The lab questioned it, and THEY said they were not aware of any insurance that pays for a PCP test. And they don't normally do drug testing, so they couldn't even tell me what the cost would be.

Yeah, like I said, without the right diagnosis code linked to the test, they will have to tell you that so you are aware you might have to pay.

If it was medically indicated and ordered with the right diagnosis, it would be covered.

The person who gave you the information was misinformed, most likely because they don't to drug testing (like you mentioned)

Another thing impacting the cost of a drug test…the speed at which results were expected. I used to work at a place that involved heavy duty machinery, and any person involved in an accident needed to have a drug test before they were cleared to get back to work.

The HR department thought it was a great idea to save money on these tests, to get results in 3 days, vs the instant results. Saved many…until someone did the math. An instant results test, which was negative, allowed that individual to immediately return to work. Otherwise, the company paid the workers ( per union agreement) to not work until the results were in, ie a 3 days minimum vacation.

I think we pay $69 per test for employees. We test pre-employment and post accident. Have never once passed that cost on to a employee or prospective employee...just a cost associated with doing business.
