We are leaving this Friday morning. We usually drive down 75 from Cleveland, Ohio. The reason for this is that I get motion sick in the car and I absolutely HATE driving in the mountains. This yeare we are going to try to go throught West Virginia since it is a bit closer and the kids will have a different view along the way. We have not driven through West Virginia for 10 years. We drive in an Excursion and there are 6 of us. Me, my two kids DD11, DS15, my niece 17 and my parents. My Dad and I usually share the driving if he will let me but he will be the one driving through the mountains. I am going to try to sit in the backseat and sleep while driving in the mountains.

My question is can anyone give me some idea as to how long you are in the mountains when driving through West Virginia? I know it is silly but I wanted to try to prepare myself and if I can say ok only X more hours of the mountains and I will be fine? Any information would be appreciated. :worship:

We moved to Fla from WV. Lived there 30 yrs. The only driving problem for you will be the WV Turnpike and you will only be on this road a little over an hour for the curvy part.

Are you taking 77 the whole way through? That's nearly 200 miles. Pretty much the entire state of WV is mountains. Rt 77 isn't crazy up and down, but you will still be going over mountains, changing elevations. It's not too twisty curvy though. I get car sick and I don't have a problem with mountains as long as the road doesn't twist and curve. :)

The mountains are pretty much from the first toll booth, to the NC / VA border. call it about 160 miles from chelyan, WV to the border. Not all twisty and turney but that is the mountain part of i-77 as far as i'm concerned. My wife gets carsick, so she drives and has no problems at all then. But if she rides... watch out.

Thanks for all the info! We are going 77 the whole way through so I at least know how long to expect to be on pins and needles. Hopefully we will leave early and I will be able to fall asleep through the mountains for a few hours. We are trying to get two teens up and out by 5am so maybe I will try a little harder to get the mountain drive over early!

We travel I77 from northeast Ohio..... I'm not a fan of the mountains either.... As navigator I'm always pressing my invisible brake and counting till we're out of the mountains ... Going up is ok, coming down with semi's on your bumper and the runaway truck ramps stresses me out. Once out of the mountains I'm golden. I figure approximately 2 hours to get thru.

If mountains we're involved we'd drive more and taking I75 is just too far west to go.... So we take Antrak... Don't mind the mountains at all on the train, ha! Seriously, going thru the mountains it always seems to be cloudy and rainy which ups the stress level for me plus the tunnels.....good luck, but I alway say it's only a few hours of stress but it seems like a whole day to me.
