Hello everyone,

Looking for some help. We will be driving from Richmond, BC to Disneyland this July. We will be leaving late Friday night and our plan is to drive Richmond-Portland, then Portland to Sacramento, & Sacramento to Anaheim. Can anyone help with hotel recommendations in Portland and Sacramento. We are two families with kids 5,6,9 & 12. A pool is a must!

Thanks!

If you want a grand "pool" experience and you don't mind staying a little north of Portland, then you could check out the Great Wolf Lodge in Centralia Wahington area for a stopping point. For a place in Portland, the Residence Inn Mariott by the Portland Airport just opened this fall and is very very nice with great suites, evening "light meals" certain days of the week, full breakfast buffet, pool, outdoor fire pit area and sports court, etc and it's in the new CascadeStation area with Ikea, Best Buy, Target etc. for tax-free shopping if that interests you plus some good family dining options like Red Robin, Quiznos and a very yummy frozen yogury shop called Yo Cream (kids love this because you get to build your own treat). The Hyatt Place across the street just opened too with very nice rooms and they have a small continental breakfast.

We stayed at a new Fairfield Inn in North Portland last summer for about $90. It was great - clean, funky/modern decor, nice staff, and free brekkie. There was also a Courtyard and Residence Inn in the same parking lot. It's right off the I-5 after the bridge from Vancouver, WA.

Welcome a fellow Richmondite!!! Best advice I can give you is if you have a BCAA membership, go a BCAA store a couple of weeks before your trip and get a Triptix of your route. Also get state maps and the hotel books, showing those hotels that give the BCAA/AAA discount. Also look for hotels that give the discount that have a Continental breakfast, as it cuts down on the eating expenses. And take the ever present and always handy GPS. Depending how long you are planning on heading stateside, a sidetrip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium is well worth the detour, but make sure to cut back to the I-5 at Sanfrancisco using the Bay bridge, otherwise you will be stuck on the Pacific Coast Hwy until Crescent city (as we found out the hard way when went to DL in early Feb/09. Have a great trip!!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions!:thumbsup2 I will definately be checking out all the places mentioned.

Ross3Half-we've been wanting to check out the Great Wolf Lodge for the last year but haven't had a chance to yet. Unfortunately, we won't have enough time again on this trip but hopefully we'll be able to make it down there later this year. It looks like lots of fun.

Belledozer-hello neighbour.....thanks for reminding me about Triptik at BCAA and all the guide books. I had forgotten all about it even though I used it last year for our trip to San Fran. We had the chance to visit the Monterey Aquarium last year and had a great time there.

I live just east of Portland and everytime we fly out of PDX we stay at the Red Lion near PDX. The rooms are nice and the beds are suuuuper comfy, it's cheap too.

IKristin-we are trying to stay just off of the I5. Is the Red Lion nearby?

I'm in Sacramento - the Embassy Suites downtown is nice. It's by the river, right across the street from Old Sacramento (the old gold rush part of the town), etc. They have an indoor pool. It's a bit pricey though.

If you are coming through Sacramento via i-80, I would say to stay the night in Roseville (right off the freeway). It is about 20 minutes from Sac and very little crime - great community! There are a ton of hotel's right off the Eureka Road exit and they are all next to a waterpark/mini golf place. There are also two sit down restuarants and a Burger King right there too. The hotels there are Courtyard by Marriot, Larkspur Landing, Holiday Inn Express, Hilton Garden Inn, Fairfield Inn, and the Residence Inn. All have great ratings. The Galleria Mall and many more restaurants are just a mile down the road. I hope this helps!

Coming from Portland, I assume the OP would be coming down I-5. Roseville would be 30 minutes out of the way. Elk Grove would be a better choice, if they don't want to stay in Sacramento proper.

I didn't think about that. I guess I just take I-80 too much :goodvibes I don't know too much about Elk Grove - I don't drive that far unless I am headed to DL ;)

In Sacramento, the heart of it, off of I-5 there is the Holiday Inn Capital Plaza. It is located between, K St mall and Old Sacramento. In old Sac there is a train museum, Train rides, cute shops and lots of ambiance. You can also stay at the Delta King, a boat on the river that has rooms and a restraunt but no pool. Just a thought!

how long would it take to drive from richmond to disneyland? just curious. we are in maple ridge!

It's pretty much a two day trip. Our initial plan was to leave 5am and make our first stop in Redding. We figured we would be in DL by dinnertime the following day. Our new plan is to drive to Portland after work on the Friday night, then Portland to Sacramento and finally Sacramento to Anaheim. Less driving time per day and we hope to get into Anaheim by 3pm.

Thanks everyone for the hotel suggestions so far:thumbsup2 I've been on TripAdvisor but haven't been able to check them all out yet. So many choices!!! I really do appreciate everyone taking the time to help me out.:)

Sorry...my fault. I forgot to mention that we are travelling down the I 5.

There are new hotels on Del Paso Rd just past the airport, just before downtown and they have an In n Out burger. Holiday Inn Express is there with the free breakfast, Homewood Suites, Hampton Inn. All have been built within the last 2 years. Next door they have In and Out, Taco Bell, Panda Express, Straw Hat Pizza, Sizzler and others. Safeway the grocery store is across the street in case there is a need for anything. Walmart, Target, Starbucks, McD's, A good pizza place "Giant Pizza" is right by there. I've never stayed there since I live close by but I can't imagine them building new hotels without a pool in Sacramento.

while the Great Wolf Lodge is nice it is also very very expensive we live about 40 miles south of it and have yet to go as I can't see paying $250+ a nite for indoor water slides LOL Just my 2 cents... there are several hotels in the Portland/Vancouver area right off the 5 also if you want to stay a lil more north of that I am in Kelso Wa and we have a Super 8 right off the freeway as well as a really nice Comfort Inn and A more $$$$ choice of the Red Lion it is our only real upscale hotel........we usually leave here around 5 or 6ish am and drive for about 12 hours and stay in Santa Nella at the Holiday Inn Express there and then its a pretty quick 4 1/2 to 5 hour trip on to DLR......can be a bit more if you run into traffic let me know if you are interested in any of the hotels in my area I can get some more info for ya!!!

This sounds like a good place for a stop. Everything is there. I will definately check it out. Thanks!!!

If we wanted to drive a little further than Sacramento (about an hour or so), where would you recommend we stop?

When we were planning a 2 night trip people suggested Santa Nella Village, from the research I did it looks like a great place and the Holiday Inn is very reasonable and had good tripadvisor reviews. There is also a gass station right by the hotel so you can gas up before you leave in the morning :)
