If you don't drive straight through, where do you stop/spend the night? It has been years since we've driven through Atlanta and aren't sure where would be convenient yet reasonable. Suggestions for towns/exits/specific properties appreciated!

When we drove from St. Louis to Orlando a couple years ago, we stopped in Macon, GA, on the way down to Orlando. On the way back home, we stopped in Chattanooga, TN.
We had planned for the longer drive for the first day of driving each way, then a much shorter day on the second day. I can't recall which hotels we stayed in - but they weren't too far off of the highways and both had pools (very relaxing after driving).
I can honestly say that I don't want to have to drive that again...at least with 2 young kids. The only way I would ever drive to FL from St. Louis was if we were staying there for at least 2 weeks. It wasn't much fun being on the road for 4 out of 8 vacation days.

:confused3 we live in Peoria and wouldn't ever think of driving......it would eat up to many vacation days......good luck.

We drove straight thru to/from St. Louis to Orlando it was 16 hours straight. Both DH and I took turns (we are night owls and both work nights) the kids slept most of the way and had a portable DVD player. However, it was a long trip and will definitely rest a night if we were to drive again. We've been fortunate to get great airfare on Southwest Airlines so driving will definitely be out. Keep your eyes on SWA and possible download ding. We're going in May and will be flying, but also hoping for good airfare deals. Good Luck!

Oh, I know how long of a drive it is! If we can get a good fare, we'll fly, but driving is not out of the question. We'll be in Florida for 12 nights (7 in Orlando, 5 in Siesta Key), so that takes the edge off.

Btw, I will try Ding again, but last year when planning a trip to San Diego Ding gave me the first negative feelings about Southwest Airlines I'd ever had! I never found available seats, even when I was sitting right there when it popped up.

I am also in the St. Louis area and hoping for good fares for May! Good luck to both of us ;)

Were on our way down in 20 days! Yeah, were drivin, and were towin a travel trailer to boot! Well call it quits in tifton GA on the way down, and on the way back, stop somewhere just north of nashville. In Tifton, there is a comfort in. it works. this time I think we might try a campground for overnight. It's not a horrible drive, we just switch off often.

Hey all! I just purchased a May trip on Travelocity that was pretty great, price-wise. My hubby is going to golf school for work and arriving on Tuesday, then kids and I are joining him on Friday for Mother's Day weekend. I got on Travelocity and was getting quotes around $735 for three flights, hotel and taxes. Then I wanted to modify the flight to get direct on American, thinking I would have to pay more. It ended up dropping me down to $699! There was an American Airlines rebate also that dropped me down to $624! Yeah! I will be staying in downtown Disney, but there were some on property rates that were decent and included ME. I don't really need the ME or park tix since my college roomie lives down in Orlando and picks me up at the airport and gets me in the parks! There is no way I would consider driving down there with my two kiddos; god bless you if you do!
