Driving from NJ?

We haven't decided if we want to take Turnpike, or go GSP south and take Cape Lewis Ferry. What do you think?

Getting to the Tpk from Ocean County is a pain in the butt, but probably easier than the GSP to the ferry to Lewes. From Lewes, you'd have to get to 95 eventually (take Rt 9 from Lewes to Rt 13, over the Ches. Bay bridge tunnnel to 64 to 95??). I think getting to 95 would be easier if you took the tpk or 295. So maybe Rt 70 to 295 south (in Cherry Hill) then 295 south to the Del. Memorial bridge.

I am also in Southern Ocean County and would think Route 70 would be your best bet. the ferry takes so much extra time unless you want the experience.

Nah, we've taken the ferry so many times. I'm thinking we're not going to take the ferry anyhow because we'll be leaving at night around 8pm to get there around 4pm (check-in) the next day

Just an update-- we left southern NJ at 9pm on Saturday, and drove straight. We were stopped in Fayetteville, NC for 1 hour for a really terrible car-wreck (we were just 10 cars behind and saw the fiery flames and everything, had to wait for firemen, police and detectives to show and clear the scene), and another 1 hour in Jacksonville, FL for lunch on Sunday.

We arrived on Orlando around 4pm, so it took us a total travelling time of 19 hours, but 17 hrs of driving time.

Hi. We drove down straight through this past April. We left around 6 pm, DH and I took turns driving and we made it to the Mc Donald's at exit 94 just south of Savannah at 8:30 am. We made it to St. Augustine by 11:30 am and checked into our hotel. (We stayed here for one night for a 'beach day' .)

The drive really wasn't that bad. We stopped for gas around Richmond, then again in the morning by the Mc Donald's right after breakfast.

I must warn you though, driving through the night can be tough if you get really tired. That white line is all there is at 3 am. There are no lights, buildings, mountains, nothing just blackness and that little white line. We drove down on a Wednesday night, so there wasn't even any other cars to speak of.

We did keep track of where we stopped at what time and at what mileage it was, if you would like that I can look for that paper for you.

yes, the laquinta inn 195 savannah. i think its exit 92 or so. nice outlets ,clean hotel and ruby tuesday to eat at. have stayed many times . goodluck. make sure on laquinta site its the 195 one, they have one in downtowna also

But think of all the wonderful things you get to see along the way! (Journey is half the fun, no?) As for wear & tear on our car, it's used to it by now We've driven her from south Jersey all the way to Quebec City, Canada; and several times a year to Cape Cod and Outer Banks. I think we put close to 40,000 miles per year?

We've taken the ferry(about$28) on every trip since 1997. We're in Ocean City, so the ferry is very convenient for us. At Lewes, you take Route 9 to US 113 (less traffic than US 13), which joins US 13 at Pocomoke. From Pocomoke, follow US 13 to the Bay Bridge ($12) which goes into Norfolk. US58 out of Norfolk to get on I95 at Emporia. For us it's about the same amount of time as driving to the Del Memorial Bridge and going I95. The ferry route has the advantage of bypassing the Delaware/Maryland/DC/VA nightmare.
The drive down the DelMarVa is mostly rural and you can average 50 mph. US 58 is also mostly rural and the average speed is 55 mph.
Navigating thru Norfolk can be tricky the first time, so map savy is a necessity. One wrong turn and you'll be on your way to Hampton Roads and Williamsburg.
