Hi All:

My dh, wants to drive down to WDW this year. I am a bit nervous, sorry I am a professional worrier :confused3. Our dd(5) and ds(3) can watch their dvds on the way down for some sanity. Just wondering how other families faired at driving all the way down. We are debating on what time of day to drive. I am figuring we'll stop in SC to stay over for a night. Appreciate all feedback.

We drove down in December from PA with an 18 month old and did great. We started at 2AM, missed all the traffic and actually made it to Jacksonville by 3:45PM. If you start early, your little ones should sleep a few hours of the trip and then wake up ready for breakfast at your first pit stop. While others will say fly, I like the drive and will do it again. Stop along the way at some beautiful sights as well like Savannah (a great place to stop one the way down, ~4 hours to Disney).

We drove down twice. All 3 kids were fine. We left around 6pm both times and drove straight through the night. Traffic was good and the kids watched about 3 movies and then we shut the TV off and told them to go to sleep. The girls were already asleep by then (DD 13 & DD 8 -last year) and DS (5 - last year) was really drowsy, but wanted to watch the ending of Star Wars before he went to sleep.

Really not that bad of a trip. We would deffinetly do it again. Sure beats airfair and the possibility of being stuck on a plane for 11 hrs!:sad2:

If you need more details just pm me and I'll send you our timeline. (I kept track of mileage, gas stops and such...)

I agree to leave between 2-4 am, so the little ones can sleep until daylight. Then you can stop for breakfast and pop in a DVD to keep them busy for another few hrs. No traffic, except truckers, on the road at that time.

We are 50 miles Northwest of Philadelphia and always drive. People will say that we are nuts but we enjoy the drive (the drive down is of course more fun than the drive back:)

We generally leave about 7pm and drive straight thru - last trip - May 2003 we made it in 17 hours - there were parts of 1-95 where there was no one in front or behind us for as far as you could see.

The DVD player is a life saver - we have a Star Wars marathon last time and were planning another one for this May 17th-27th trip - DS11 is upset since we booked May based on history of Star Wars Weekends and now they are only in June.

We also bring lots of snacks and drinks to help eliminate some of the stops. He also will receive a small wrapped gift each time we cross a state line - to give him something to look forward to. Travel games, magnetic checkers etc. Nothing too expensive.

The first time we drove we stopped at South of the Border- we didn't enjoy it at all - would rather have skipped it and get to Disney faster. Counting the Sough of the Border Billboards can also fill some time - but we got bored when we reached 100 :)

Homework tries to get done - I also printout some info on the countries in Epcot - that is our focus this year for our scrapbook for the school.

Have fun and just enjoy the family time.

We drove two summers ago from Pittsburgh with a 2 and 4 years old. They watched DVDs and were happy. We left after work on friday and were there around dinner time on saturday night. This summer we will leave early on sunday, hopefully drive through to Savannah the first day, then make it to Disney by lunch time on Monday. My kid are great in the car though.

Hi
We drove down when our kids were younger, and I'd never do it again. I had a VCR in the car at the time that helped, but it seemed so long. Our friends met us there and they flew and seemed all fresh and awake. We were so tired and probably looked it from the drive. We drove straight through, but coming home we stopped for the night. We drove down from the Philly area. The only good thing was that we had our car with us. Have a great trip!!

We have driven down three times from jersey, the first time the kids were 10 weeks, almost 2, and almost 3, they were amazing, we got to the exit before you get out of georiga (so about 3-4 hours away) That time we had left about 8 at night, and drove until right after lunch, we were also with another family, with a 13 week, and 2 year old.
The second time the kids were 15 months, almost 3 and 4. We left around 4 in the morning, and by 8 that night we stopped, at the exact same spot we did the first time.
The third time we drove they were 2, 4 and 5, and we left the same around 4, and got to the same exit.
My advice, is push hard that first day, the farther you get the less the second day. Getting so close, we have a good nights sleep, wake up when we want, have a great breakfast, drive a few hours and are at disney property by checkin time. The shorter second day is the key, at least for us, we sleep like the dead that night in the hotel, and by the time we get up, all refreshed, we eat, and get to disney, and 2 out of the three times we have gone to downtown disney that night.
We love the driving, we drive everywhere, my kids are awesome in the car, a few christmas's ago, we drove out to my family in Illinois, and got stuck in Ohio, in a blizzard, on the highway for 10 hours (in the same spot), and the kids never even complained, and we did not even turn on the tv until it got dark!! I get a rubbermaid, and fill it up with new stuff, new crayons, scotch tape (laugh, but they LOVE it), post it notes (hours of entertainment!!), stickers, they each get a new color wonder book, the big ones play games, snacks, they love little plastic people, and they will sit in there seats and play them for hours too. I keep bubbles in the car, have only used them once, in a pinch, but it bought us about an hour (stuck in traffic, trying to get off at an exit to get a hotel). They all have flashlights for the night, and I will get a new movie or two for the car (we netflix them). My girls also love to put blankets over there heads and pretend they are in caves.
I wish I could do a picture, last time on the way home, they asked if they could make tattos with there markers on there legs, so we said yes (who cares, it washes off). By the time it was over, they were completly blue, blue legs, blue arms, blue faces, not just scribbled, but colored in, it was hysterical!! You should of seen the looks we got when we stopped for lunch!!
We also pack a lunch, and picnic the first day at a rest stop, they get to eat, and run around for an hour or so, that makes a huge difference in how they behave.
They also like to count down the states, your oldest would like that, we tell them how many states we have to go through, and we name them all, and tell them when we get to a new one, they love that.
I say do it, nothing like a good road trip! We love to travel that way! Plan on taking the whole summer next year to drive out to california, and enjoy that ride, and everything on the way!
Good luck! It is fun!

We're making our 6th driving trip in April. We've done some flying in between (if southwest offers a great fare we don't refuse it!) We're coming from Wilmington, Delaware (just south of Philadelphia). We've driven overnight twice but don't prefer that. We like to leave between 2a.m. and 4 a.m. to get through the Washington, DC traffic area early. We like to drive to just north of Orlando. Usually we stay in Lake Mary, right off I-4. We stay at a hotel with the free continental. Get up early the next day, have a free breakfast and we're checking in at Disney usually before 9 a.m.! The first time we drove our kids were 5 & 8 and we have always done a lot of distance driving --- we have relatives that are 10hours away -- which prepped them for the trip. They really look forward to the drive.

We drove down last March 06', leaving by 6:00 p.m. -- stopped in N.C. by 2:00 a.m. -- awoke at 8:00 a.m. and arrived in Florida by 3:00 p.m. Not a bad drive if you don't mind driving. We have a three year old, so we packed lot's of games, arts and crafts, and a portable dvd player. Just smile, your going to Disney!:woohoo:

have mostly driven over past 20+years since we have always had at least 5 and now six of us to transport. Did fly th eone year when gas was close to $3.00 a gallon and southwest gave us $99 round trip and baby was still free!!
We even rented a car that year and flyin gwas still cheaper.

However, again, I concur with others leave very early in the am to avoid rush hour thru major cities. We actually prefer to drive straight through and get ther around noon after an 18-24 hour drive with lots of stops! That way we have rest of day to relax, nap and swim before the long days begin.

But I will say, if $$ wise it was better deal to fly? I'd fly in a heartbeat.

Hey minmouse, native DE here! how 'bout this cold?

We drove down from NJ in Jan 05...WITH DS(4 yrs), twin DD's(2.5 yrs), and I was 5 months pregnant. All I can say is my poor husband. Actually, we made out ok and will drive again in Jan 08. The best thing that we did was plan to stay at a hotel with indoor pool. That way they got to swim off some pent up energy. I also didn't potty train my dd until we got back, even though one of the girls was ready to start. Diapers were much easier!

Good luck!

Driving from south jersey is the only way we go. We enjoy the drive, and we think we save money. It's easy to load up the van with our own cases of bottled water and lots of snacks. We also like having our own vehicle once we're there, to scoot around in.

We get our park tickets through AAA, and they're always cheaper than any other venue we've found (except for maybe package deals- we don't do any of that).

We usually stop near Dillon, SC for the night in between.

We live in Central NJ and over the past 11 years have flown down to WDW 4x and we have driven to either WDW or a Florida Cruise port at least 20 times. Our kids are now 11 and 8. Sometimes we have hit such horrible traffic, especially in the Northern VA area. The fastest we ever made it there was in 17 hours.
On that particular trip....we packed the car up as soon as we got home from work. Because my Husband is the driver, he went to sleep at 9pm. Got up at 2:45am. We put the kids in the van in their pajamas @ 3AM and drove until they woke up for breakfast @ 9:30 am and we were way into Virginia at that point. We made it to WDW by 8pm. Everyone went to bed at a reasonable hour and we started the next day fresh. The absolute worst experiences driving down were on Easter breaks when we left right after work on a Friday and hit nothing but traffic.
We also are not in favor of the leaving either after work or very late and driving straight through. This always results in someone being excessively tired and not able to enjoy the first day or two of the trip. It is also very dangerous unless one is accustomed to being awake at all of those odd hours with no sleep. It throws off sleep schedules, etc. I would strongly recommend against driving through the night.

We brought along the kids separate portable DVD players with headphones, they bring game boy, Sony PSP, books, cards, etc. We bring them pillows, use the beach towels for blankets (rather than packing blankets) and try to keep them as entertained and comfortable as possible.

It really is not that bad.....well, that is my opinion....and backed up by how many times we have driven down!

There is an swesome website to check out for driving down I95. It has the whole thing broken down by exit. All food, all lodging, all gas stations. We found it to be excellent for the drive, because I could say, "ok there's a BK at this next exit, but a Subway in 10 miles..."

Its usastar.com

We flew from NJ in 2005 with the kids at ages 2.5 and 15 mths, and 2006 we drove down with the kids ages 3.5 and 2. It was so much easier to drive!

We left from Monmouth County at night, hit no traffic, and the kids slept the night. We had everything packed in case, and we have a dvd. We were there within 18 hours. We had an extra day before we could check into the hotel so we stayed with my aunt and uncle who lives ten minutes away from Disney. We caught up on extra sleep.

I remember as a kid driving down to WDW twice (from western NJ, go P'burg!) Back then no seatbelts, I usually rode in the back of the station wagon. It was fun. I'll never forget the one time my Aunt was following us down and we communicated by CB radio(no cell phones either!) She called my dad "glare" the entire way, he is bald! :lmao: We still call him that 25 years later! We drove down with 4 boys 5 years ago, not bad they watched videos and played gameboys. We will be driving down in Oct. now with 5 boys 16,13,12,11,5 at that time! We will be stopping outside of Atlanta to stay at my in laws for a night. I don't think it will be too bad! Flying is just too expensive for 7 of us! :)

Would you mind sharing this info with me please? We will be driving down in May. I was looking for info on the I-95 site but didn't find what i was looking for like gas stops etc. Thanks in advance!

We are planning on leaving very early in the morning, say 3-4 am. So this way we don't loose sleep driving overnight. We don't do well with missing sleep! We'll drive until we need to stop and then stay overnight. We'll have breakfast and finish the last leg of our travels as early as we can. I just can't see us driving late at night, missing sleep and having energy for the parks the next day.
