OK,so the SF run of Book of Mormon just sold out in 1 hour and I'm left without any tickets. :furious:

The Pantages still has seats available during our trip to DL. How long would it take to drive from the DLR to the Pantages Theater, say on a Friday (8pm showtime), Saturday (8pm) or Sunday night (6:30).

We went to Pantages to see the Lion King, way back when. Unfortunately, I can't remember how long it took but it seemd painfully long. I'm sure it was at least an hour. We went mid-week and the traffic was horrible. I just remember a lot of stop and go, stop and go. Worth the effort though.

My daughter and I are going to the Sat afternoon show of BOM on 10/20. We decided to take a quick trip to DL for the Halloween Party, and are going to take the train down to the parks from Central CA.

We will be taking the train from Anaheim to Union Station on Sat morning and then catching the Metro Red Line to Hollywood and Vine right across from the Pantages. I think the whole trip is going to take us about 90 min and the best part is we won't have to fight traffic.

We saw Wicked when it was there. It took us about 45 minutes to drive from DLR, with normal light-for-L.A. traffic.

I went to see Book of Mormon last weekend, but stayed in Santa Monica. The theater was 12 miles up Santa Monica Blvd. and for the Friday night show it took us 2 hours and 15 minutes to travel those 12 miles. We missed the first song.

No construction. No accidents. Just Friday traffic on the surface streets. Stick to the freeways if you make the trip.

Your best bet is driving up for the Sunday show, which you should plan for a 45 minute drive on the freeway plus another 20 minutes local streets and parking.

For Fri & Sat evening....I would plan 2+ hours, especially because the local streets from the freeway offramp to the Pantages will be insanely packed/slow around the Hollywood & Highland area.

This is what I was going to say, so I would say this is accurate.

You can get downtown in 45 minutes using this all-carpool lanes route:

I-5N to 91E to 110N.

When downtown carpool lanes will end. Follow the 101N and get off at Union Station. Park at Union Station (it's cheap) and get on the red line. Get off at Hollywood+Vine. You'll save a fortune in parking and the train is significantly faster than driving.

Important note: This will NOT work after November 9th on the 110, unless you have one of the new Fasttrack devices with the switch that you can tell the system how many people are in the car. Even carpools will be required to have the device, even though they will not be charged. The minimum fine for violating this is $350 plus about $100 administration fees.

Wow, no kidding? Now a Fasttrak thing is required for the carpool lane on the 110? Seriously? Not even a "regular" one (we have the one for the South OC toll roads like the 241).

I used to drive up the 405 to the 110 to downtown for work at 6am to make it by 8:15am....glad I don't have to do that anymore!

No Kidding, but on the plus side, if you are willing to pay the toll, you can use them solo.

Here is a link to an article that explains it nicely:

This will eventually be through most of southern California and the new transponders can be used everywhere the old ones can be, but the old transpondes cannot be used where the new ones will be needed.

That sounds like a good plan, but only works for matinees since the trains don't run late. I dislike LA traffic so much I'd definitely think about opting for a matinee.

Actually the trains normally run until at least midnight. The busses may stop earlier, but they try to encourage taking the trains, so they usually runs until after most shows have gotten out. Just check the schedule for your day.

I'm talking Amtrak, not the Red Line. OP needs to get all the way back to DL, and AFAIK the last Amtrak leaves LA Union Station at 10pm.

I see, I was mixing up the messages, I thought some suggested driving to union station, then taking the red line, which would work and avoid a lot of extra traffic by using the carpool lanes, until Nov. 10th. Amtrack is a different story though.

We went to Wicked at the Pantages last January after spending a few hours at DLR and then dinner at the Grove. We were running late (of course!) but managed to make it in an hour on a Friday night around 6 PM. It was touch and go for awhile, and we almost ran out of gas, too, so had to pull off somewhere in LA (THAT was fun) but still made it to a nearby parking lot (is it sad that I don't think $10 is too much to pay for parking?) and we ran down the street (and were far from being the weirdest thing happening, believe you me) and made it within a few minutes of the time they said they close the doors and don't HAVE to let you in till intermission (I'm sure they're more accommodating than that, but we didn't want to miss anything, this play was a real treat for all of us).

Anyway... I recommend going on Sunday, where traffic will be much lighter, and you don't have to drive back that late at night. Still leave yourself about an hour, hour and a half to breathe easily. But you may make it in less than 45 minutes and be waiting a while!

Welcome to LA. :goodvibes

Good plan except that you want 91W, not 91E.
