drinking around the world legal question

Doesn't look like Florida's laws allow for this with a quick google of the drinking laws of the state. There was a thread not too long ago about not serving someone who had a license expire while on vacation - seems they're pretty strict.

Aside from that, even though it isn't illegal it doesn't mean the establishment has to allow it. It's up to their discretion and I highly doubt WDW would take the risk. Bartenders are pretty good about watching for the old 'buy and pass' trick. I wouldn't chance it.

VERY strict laws, and frequent "underage" sting operations on convenience stores and bars...

Texas, also -- we used to brief our underage students that they could be cited for possession if they were pushing the cart at the store while shopping with their legal-age friends...

Just talked to DD, who is a culinary student. She said she would be quite happy eating her way around the world and making fun of DS and I as we drink, lol. Thanks for all the help.

LOL, this is me! I'm plenty old enough to be snarfing the Grey Goose slushies, but I can't stop stuffing my face with caramels and such for long enough to drink them. :rotfl:

I teach HS and I have a conversation at least once a school year about stuff very similar to this.

Give the poor dad a break. He wants to do the right thing. He doesn't want to get kicked out of Disney and he wants both his children to have a good time. His daughter has said she's not going to drink.

Wow. Until this moment, I hadn't any idea that there were any exceptions anywhere, ever.

To be fair, I don't think very many establishments allow for it. They can still refuse. I haven't known anyone to be able to do it, and it's semi-common knowledge around here.

In WI here, and if you are with your parents (or married and your spouse is 21) you can drink. But the legal aged people are supposed to be present until your BAC is zero.

The Disney website is pretty explicit that all guests must be 21. You can find it on every restaurant description for the ones that serve alcohol.

Good question though, considering the state specific laws. And for any international guests!

I'm taking my DS (22) and DD (20) on a college graduation trip to Orlando. We want to drink around the world, but DD will not be of legal age when we go. I know they will not sell her alcohol, but can I buy a drink and share it with her? I live in Ohio and it is legal here for a parent to buy their child a drink in a bar or restaurant. Just want to know if that's legal in Florida.

Thank you for asking the ?- One son will be 20 on upcoming trip, though I wasn't planning on letting him drink, it's good to know what the law states. Is this a fairly recent change? When I went to FL for college prong break don't remember many people being concerned about the drinking age!

i to live in ohio and know for a fact that it is illegal in ohio to buy someone underage alcohol in a restaurant. i believe it is a federal law that no one under 21 shall consume alcohol in public.:thumbsup2

And that's where reading the rest of the thread first comes in...... :surfweb:;)

I was on vacation in Florida two years ago on my birthday and could not get served a beer because I did not have my license with me to prove my age; I was turning 45! I had my teenage son and husband with me! And I do not look younger than 21 by all means, so Florida is very strict about making sure you are of legal drinking age.

OK so now I am totally bummed because on our last trip to WDW I was 36 and not once did anyone ask my husband also 36 or myself for an ID !! I guess we look like old geezers!!;)

The majority of this thread is helpful but I can't help but be so disappointed with the number of snarky answers.

Why can't people answer questions and move on? Why is it necessary to insult the OP for asking the questions of so called Disney experts instead of consulting a lawyer?

Sarcastically telling someone they might want to try rides instead of drinking? Really?

I don't get the mentality of some people...

OP- I'm glad you asked. I learned something new today!

Yea, welcome to the "dis". I see you are fairly new, don't worry in this world people are lawyers, doctors, super parents, parents of snowflake children, and in general all out opinionated. Also generally people are nice around her though.:)

1. As already pointed out this is a recent change.

2. I believe this is considered a "state thing". What the feds do is withhold federal highway funds if your drinking age is less than 21.

I see now that the OP only has 3 posts. I guess we don't all think alike. If I am going to plan something for my family, I look things up via Google and make phone calls to get my ducks in a row. I would never think to go on a message board for moral/legal advice or suggestions.

I don't think she was asking for moral advise at all, just legal.

That's actually not true. Provisions by the state of Ohio (and 23 others state by the way) allow for people under 21 to drink alcohol in the presence of their parent or legal guardian. That includes bars and restaurants. However, it is up to the establishment to allow it and I don't believe many do.

That doesn't mean that anyone over 21 could purchase alcohol for someone underage. THAT is illegal. But that's also not what everyone is discussing.

But LEGALLY, you are incorrect :thumbsup2

Past two years Pitt's band for reasons no one knows has played at games in Canada, one for the Bills and one for the Alouettes a CFL team. The drinking age in Canada is 19. After he spent like $7 dollars for one drink, he now knows why we don't buy alcohol when we eat out.

Next year there is no way we are going back to the BBBBVVVVAAAA silent Q bowl :goodvibes since we are no longer in the Big East.

If Cinci ever goes there and you want to go to a cheap bowl game drop me a PM. Anytime you do the same thing three years in a row you get to know the lay of the land.

The drinking age in Canada is 19 for SOME provinces. In Manitoba, the age is 18, as it is in most provinces.

Yes once you get past a certain age you don't really keep up with the laws and I found out here its more complicated than I thought.

My wife was certain that it was legal for us to serve small amounts of tasty beverages to our older but still under 21 sons. Found out its still illegal its just not going to be an issue unless things get out of hand.

End of March we no longer have to worry about it. :thumbsup2

And then you can serve large amounts of tasty beverages :lmao:

Definitely a sign of the times. My cousin was married in wdw in 1999. I was 18. At the reception (best reception I have ever been at btw!!!!) when they were bringing around the champagne toast they carded me---and served me.

Interesting... I was in WDW in 97, I was 20. I didn't even think to try to buy a drink. I had a few sips of my (then) boyfriend's. I was so annoyed to be a few months short. Hmmmm.
