drinking around the world legal question

Just to answer the question posted by the OP. At WDW you may not purchase or share an alcoholic beverage with someone who under 21 (not of legal age to drink alcohol in Florida). If you are caught doing so, it may be grounds for expulsion from the park. Disney has a reputation of being very serious about underage drinking.

There's no US Federal drinking age. The states set that limit. However, as was noted somewhere above, the Federal government withholds highway funding and possibly other funds from states that set their drinking age at less than 21.

OK so now I am totally bummed because on our last trip to WDW I was 36 and not once did anyone ask my husband also 36 or myself for an ID !! I guess we look like old geezers!!;)

Actually, some places will card everyone, because underaged drinkers will dress up (wigs, facial hair, etc) to make them look older.

I think some states have laws that require carding. My daughter lives in Louisiana, and I get carded almost (but not all) everywhere I go there. They stay it's a state law. And I'm 53 with gray hair.

My dad gets carded when he buys some wine or beer at Wegmans (grocery store). He's 77. He thinks it's hilarious, but that's one of those places that cards EVERYBODY. Takes the heat off the employees for having to decide whether or not someone looks old enough. WDW doesn't card everybody (yet.)

Usually around here there will be a sign that says "We card everyone that looks like they are under X" and X is some number like 39.

In PA you can only buy beer by the case in beer distributors and upto 2 six packs at a bar and Wine and Spirits at State run "State Stores" now mostly called Wine and Spirits Stores.

Our local Giant Eagle Supermarket is working around the rules a little by geting a bar licence that allows them to sell beer by the bottle in their cafes but it also allows them to sell beer by the 6 pack. A quicky type stop Sheetz tried to do the same but didn't sell it to be consumed on property.

OK long story even longer, they card EVERYONE i'm 51 and know to have my ID ready. They are so very careful because of how they are "massaging" the law. I had one clerk tell me that they couldn't put in a bag for me but I could because then they are liable if they do it because its now concealed and if I give to a minor its worse for them. :confused3

That's how our Wegmans did it. They always had the cafe (and now restaurant) so they added the license to it. It's nice because they seem to have a lot of fancy micro and imported beers. They also have a wine card and dispenser type thing so you can buy wine by the glass with dinner. It's as good as it gets with our stupid laws! (I think, I'm not sure though, that if you buy beer you must pay for it at the cafe and take it out to your car- unlike the juices I'll buy with my meal, eat, and DD and I carry our juice and leftovers around the rest of the store while shopping)

I haven't read the whole thread, but I can tell you that Disneyland is extremely strict about underage drinking. My cousin was of legal age with valid ID and they still wouldn't sell to her, nor even allow her to hold a beer in her hand.

She had turned 21, but hadn't updated her license - it was a valid license, just one of the sideways versions that states now use for easy ID of under 21 - tried to buy a beer and they wouldn't let her. Her boyfriend was only allowed to purchase one beer. As they walked away, he handed it to her so he could stop to tie his shoe. The CM followed them and grabbed the drink from her hand and threw it in the trash and told them that if they caught her with beer again, they would be kicked out.

Now, maybe they were acting like kids who would cause trouble... but, they were all legal age with valid ID and still had problems.

Pretty sure you can't walk out of the area with an open bottle but I have carried 6 packs though the store.

Our GE's are pretty much snack bars except for the "Market District" ones that are uber fancy stores with cheese mongers and a Charcuterie (i think its fancy lunch meat). We also and I think you do also have attached State Stores. Its still State store employees but its "in" the store.

Did you guys get the wine bottle Kiosks? It was a vending machine where you video chatted with a PLCB (only PA people would know who they are) employee in Harrisburg. If you passed muster it would dispense your bottle (if it worked).

Bwah ha ha! We had a wine kiosk. It had an "out of order" sign for a couple months, and then it disappeared!

I doubt I'd pas PLBC muster anyway. They may know about my smuggling activities, lol.

Good to know about the beer. I detest all kids so I haven't bought any there yet but might sometime for my dad.

I have been carded at WDW both while purchasing drinks and while drinking them

In other places I have had my ID taken away (DHs too) because they thought they were fake and brought them to the manager. And we got carded so much in the casinos security gave us stamps/armbands so they wouldn't keep bothering us :lmao:

Do you look 12?

Probably 20ish ;) but at 32 I am not going to complain :rolleyes1

Love this!

I once got asked by a flight attendant if I was old enough to be in the exit row of an airplane. You have to be 15 to sit in an exit row. I was 25 at the time. :rotfl: Made my day, though!

Now in my late 30s, I am positively giddy whenever I get carded. I was blessed with good skin which I guess makes me look younger.

ive personally never been carded at disney nor have i been with anyone that was.. but im sure they do card if you look young enough, but that all being said in florida you have to be 21 in order to drink even if you parents are with you...

another thing about florida is that most laws dealing with drinking are actually set by the county not the state.
