Dress code for Broadway show??

Will be going to see Mamma Mia! on Feb 14th evening show with DH, is there any dress code? We don't want to dress wrongly and look out of place especially as its Valentines Day. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated before I pack the suitcases!

We went to see Cats about 3 years ago (just before it closed). I took a nice dress for my DD and myself, and jacket for DH, and a dress shirt/slacks for DS. We went to a Saturday matinee, and no one was dressed well at all. Most people were in shorts and t-shirts.

I'd guess that people would dress nicer for 1) an evening show and 2) a romantic holiday, but I don't think you need to wear a formal or anything. Probably a nice dress with your hubby in a jacket and tie would be fine.

Claire ...are you going to a show in London? or NYC?

I think I will wear black trousers and a smart top while DH wears black trousers and a smart shirt.

It also depends on where your seats are located. If your seats are located in the orchestra section, you'll feel most comfortable in business attire for an evening show. If in the mezzazine or balcony, you can pretty much get by on a nice shirt and pants. Matinnees generally are more casual, I've been to many Saturday matinnees in jeans!!

I usually opt for "business casual" -- slacks and a nice top.

Dress codes have become almost non-existant in recent years. While they need not be so strict in many venues, common sense, if not decency, should prevail.

For a show, any show, nice casual (business casual?) should be required and a nice jacket, with or without a tie, would be okay, too. You'll still see a few tuxedos and gowns, but that's overdressing these days unless it's a special event.

Shorts, t-shirts, thongs... well, you'll see just about everything and anything, but that's just plain tacky, unless you're at Typhoon Lagoon
