Dress code at Traveling Broadway Shows

Quite a variety around here. Some come in jeans and sweaters (the younger ones), and some come very formal, but most wear casual dressy type clothes. Maybe a tie for men and nice dress for women.

So called, business casual on up to maybe a sport coat/slacks, a few suits. Comparable for the ladies. Nothing ultra fancy nor formal. It's not the opera.

I've seen many shows on Broadway, and also here in Washington at National Theatre, Ford Theatre, and the Kennedy Center. I'd say the common dress these days is casual, although in the evenings you may see people very dressed up. I tend to wear clothes that I might wear to church or to a work function - dressier slacks and a blouse, and dressier shoes. I do it more for me, when I go out on the town, I like to dress up. It seems like its anything goes at the theatre, although I don't know that I have ever seen anyone wear shorts or T-shirts, I have certainly seen plenty of people in jeans and sneakers.

I've been to the theater on Broadway in NYC and also a few of the "Broadway in Boston" shows, such as Les Miserables. We have tickets for June to see "The Producers". DH and I always dress up because we enjoy doing so. We make a night of it, hire a car to drive us in, go out to dinner, then see the show. You do see all kinds of dress these days, though most of the people are dressed up.

The last few times we went in Chicago there were mostly nice pantsuits or dresses/skirts for the women and maybe a sportcoat for men. Not too many suits and dressy dresses though. You will always see the occasional t-shirts and jeans person though.

In New Orleans, women mostly wear dresses or skirt suits, some dressy pants. Men mostly wear suits, some wear just shirt and tie.

Like most people said, around here, it ranges from business casual to dressy (suits and ties, dresses). Partially, it depends on the day and time of the show -- dressier for nighttime performances (dressiest on Sat. night) and more casual for matinees.

I've gone to some shows here in Pittsburgh (evening) and it's usually dressy casual. I usually wear a sweater or nice top and dress pants.

Around here (Columbus) you can see everything from jeans to cocktail dresses & suits, especially at the nighttime weekend performances. Some make a night on the town out of it. I'd say the average would wear a dressier business casual.

I'm seeing more and more that people are dressing down for shows. You definitely see a wide range of clothing. If I'm going to a show right after work, I usually wear whatever I wear to work (usually khakis and a button down shirt or sweater). If I go on a weekend, I tend to wear jeans and a decent shirt. I've gone to shows in New York on the weekends in the summer and worn shorts and t-shirts.

And in some cases, it depends on the show. More edgy shows like Rent, the Rocky Horror Show, etc you'd feel out of place if you got all dressed up.

My advice, just wear whatever you are most comfortable in. People will be looking at what's going on onstage, not what you are wearing.
