dream class ships safety/lifeboats

Last week when we were on the Magic I was able to get a couple of pictures of the inside of one of the lifeboats. While they do pack you in like sardines, you will be safe. They aren't meant to be comfortable, they are meant to save your life. The only concern that I would have, would be if you got one or two claustrophobic people in the lifeboat, that could set off a panic in the very confined space of the lifeboat. I will say my faith in humanity was restored on our flight home when we were stuck on the taxiway for 2.5 hours losing power once because the wind knocked out the motors, and of the full plane not one person complained, we all just sat and patiently waited it out. The stewardess thanked everyone for being so calm, and seemed genuinely surprised by this. So if everyone stays calm life would be good:)

Will post pictures later if I remember

I would be interested in reading an account of that day, if anyone knows where one is. I will try google too.

This thread is more than 5 years old, so that was an older incident. Since then there have still been many times that a DCL ship performed a rescue at sea. I'm sure you can find references by Googling.

Enjoy your cruise!

One thing that made me feel better as a first time cruiser was the realization that it takes a very long time for a large ship to sink. It's unlikely that things would happen in a split second. There should be time to meet up at your muster station, reunite with your kids, etc. Knowing exactly what to do, and remaining calm would be paramount to a successful outcome.

It took a bit of looking, but I found a photo that might help....along with the yellow hardsided life boats, there are several inflatables all along deck 4. I don't know how they are deployed, but there are several.... They're in the white barrels.

Actually kashmir has a nice short accounting of it, which follows the story quite well.

There was a U Tube video posted shortly after it all happened, but I am not sure of it is still up, in fact I seem to remember it was suddenly removed for.some.reason.

In the unlikely event of a real emergency, you are to go to your stateroom, get your life vest, and go to your muster station. There are procedures where the CMs will evacuate the kids from the Club/Lab, etc. to their muster stations and there are extra life vests at the station. Unless specifically instructed to do so, parents are not supposed to claim their kids at the club/lab.

There MUST be adequate lifeboats for all guests and crew in order to meet Coast Guard requirements.

DCL takes safety very seriously and as one PP said, they do lifeboat drills at almost every Castaway stop. And it all paid off a little over a year ago when a passenger jumped overboard from a Carnival ship. Carnival couldn't lower their lifeboat (it got tangled in the rigging), couldn't locate the passenger, had inferior searchlights, etc. The Disney Wonder under the direction of Captain John and Staff Captain Guus located the man, lowered a lifeboat, and brought him onboard the Wonder. The best reports were from the Carnival passengers--they clearly recognized the superiority of the DCL crew.
I was on the Wonder that cruise and I have a picture of the Sensation sitting still about 100 feet from us. As far as I could tell Carnival never even tried to put a boat in the water simply because of the direction we came up on and happened to be in a better position to hear and pick up the mob. I actually heard Guus on the pa saying they had located the mob and we could resume talking on the upper decks.
