Drawing a Blank...Flying Questions

I fly at least one time a year, but for some reason I am blanking


1. When you go through security, I know you have to take your laptop out and open it to give to TSA handler (forget correct name).Do you power it on or leave it off?

2. I am flying airtran and checked in earlier today for my flight in the morning. I paid for my checked backed while checking in. So, when I get to the airport, when they scan my information, will they see that I already paid for my baggage?

sorry if dumb questions, but can't find my answers anywhere to this and making me nuts

I fly southwest so have no idea about the luggage fees.

For the laptop, all you have to do is take it out of the bag and send it through the scanner by itself in its own bin. You don't have to open it or power it up or anything like that. We fly 3-4 times a year with a laptop.

2. I haven't flown Airtran, but on other airlines where I have prepaid baggage (United and Alaska), they were aware of it when I checked in at the airport. (you could print a copy of the receipt, just in case, if you have a printer.)

We normally fly southwest, but airfare was outrageous

I always just take my laptop out of the bag and put the bag in the bottom of the bin with the laptop on top and have never had an issue or had anyone touch it and I fly quite a bit both for business and pleasure.

Some screeners will make you put the laptop in the bin all by itself. It most likely depends on if you just have a laptop sleeve or not. My laptop bag is a little suitcase-like thing, so obviously that doesn't work for me. You can just ask when you are loading up your bins. At most airports, they are nice. (don't expect nice at MCO, though...just sayin'...have had the rudest screeners there and been yelled at twice for just following their rules)

Yeah, guess each airport is different

Is that the one that has like criss cross straps in it? My DH has one of those, but was not sure if he could leave it in that case or not.

Some airports are cool with this..others aren't.
