Dramamine for the Rides, LOL? Seriously, those with some motion sickness

dramamine no-drowsy always works for me but i still dont take a chance. i know my limits also.

I used sea-bands on a flight and they did nothing for me, I agree with the placebo affect theory. Used Bonine and I was fine, but did stay away from Star Wars Ride & Mission Space & spinny rides. Did great on Test Trac and all the other coasters. My 7 DD also used bonine and she was fine too and neither of us were drowsy.

I'm very prone to motion sickness, and my other problem is that products like dramamine and bonine knock me right out!! So having read about ginger I tried it. I ended up buying candied ginger and a ginger chew. It did trully help my motion sickness. I don't think I would've been able to handle the tea cups, but most of the motion rides which really make me ill I could do. What I found it did was have a calming effect on my stomach, so that even though I was still kinda dizzy I didn't feel like I was about to yak.

Spearment altoids and staying away from the Teacups and Cinderella's Golden Carousel, and anything else with repetetive motion.

Ironically, I can ride Mission Space (the ungreen version) several times in a row without any precautions.

I've tried less drowsy Dramamine and Bonine and I still get drowsy; so much so that I'm grumpy and didn't want to ride anything at AK! The Sea Bands help but I don't take chances on the big rides like EE or ToT.

Everyone's different so you might need to try a variety of products to find what works best for you. I know for sure the Scopalomine patch works for me but I would only used them on a cruise.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm going to buy a sampler of the ideas here and try each of them until I find what works=== and avoid the teacups :rotfl: :rotfl:

Happy Travels!

I use the ginger pills and they work GREAT. Was in the backseat of a suburban for a 9 day trip with my sons boy scout trip. Really rough ride and had no problems at all.

Forget that over-the-counter garbage. For world class motion sickness, the ONLY way to go is with the prescription patch, Transdermal-Scop (the scopolamine patch). I talked to my doctor about severe motion sickness before our last trip to Disney, and he gave me the patch (which we tested out at Paramount's Carowinds...very similar to Six Flags). OH...MY...GOD! What a difference. I could ride everything with ZERO nausea and no side effects. The patch goes behind your ear and getsbchanged every 3 days. I am very prone to medicial side effects and it never made me tired (though it is listed as a possible side effect). Also you MUST wash your hands after applying it and you CANNOT touch your eyes if you have touched the patch as it may cause blurred vision (temporarily).

It was a God send. I woud urge anyone who takes dramamine everyday on their trip to consider the patch. Ask your doctor. I would also refrain from using it for more than a week as it may also cause some withdrawal with long term use.

For those who think Sea Bands are a placebo. On our first 7 day cruise the first night, my daughter woke up in the middle of the night extremly motion sick. We tried getting her to take the chewable dramamine, and she could not hold it down. We tried to dissolve it into some Sprite and she could not hold it down. We purchased some Sea Bands on board and put those on her wrists. We did not tell her what they were for, for all she knew they were bracelets. And what do you know, within 5 to 10 min of putting on the Sea Bands she was running around. Later the bands started to irritate her and she took them off, within half an hour she was sick again. Put them back on and didn't take them off for the rest of the trip, never got sick again. So say what you want about it being a placebo, it worked for us.

:thumbsup2 Thank you. I know I'm not the only person they work for! :)

I took the 550mg Ginger Root Capsules from GNC and they seemed to work for me. Took one in the morning and one in the evening and started a week before we left. The only time I felt even the least bit ill was Expedition Everest (on the backwards part) and that was the first ride on the first day of our trip after having been up for nearly 48 hours straight. I rode the Tea Cups and other rides that might cause motion sickness later in the week with no ill effects.

If you click on the link in the post, and read the article including the study results. Both study results for nausea showed that using accupressure showed success above the control group. It also says that studies were flawed and less than ideal.

I'm not saying Sea Bands will work for everyone, but I do know they work for some because I've seen it.

The patches that go behind the ear are superior and that is what I personally have always used. My husband reacted poorly to the patch and my daughter is too young to use it. So we have to use alternatives for them.

For those of you taking Ginger (yes I saw that mythbusters too) has anyone gone for gingersnaps? I read around on some different boards that say that ginger is a natural way to settle the stomach and if I can get an excuse to eat gingersnaps (instead of taking pills) I'm all for it.

For the record, I can get motion sick watching certain IMAX movies and the teacups are probably the worst type of ride for me.

Seriously thinking of getting a prescription for the patches from my RNP for our December trip!

Another family of ginger users here. We start taking them the night before our flight (because my DH & DD's get motion sickness on the plane). We take one every morning and evening during the trip until we return home. My DH could not ride any coasters (including the mild ones) before trying this in March. He was able to do Splash Mountain, Thunder Mountain, and Space Mountain with absolutely no problems. I have had trouble as I've gotten older with the more adventurous rides. I would not have even attempted EE. However, I did so this year and was fine. My DH has also taken the ginger when we went on a boat dinner cruise (not at WDW). He didn't get motion sickness on that either (and would have in the past). We will continue to use the ginger tablets for all future trips.

The non-drowsy dramamine knocks me right out! I can lay down and sleep for hours after taking them. I haven't tried anything else since we found ginger tablets work for us and they are natural.

How did you feel after taking the less drowsy Dramamine? Were you tired/sleepy? Or was it as if you hadn't taken anything at all?
I wasn't sleepy at all, although that could have been from all the coffee I had in my refillable mug! :teeth: I think it was well worth taking..That nauseous feeling is the pits

i bought a bottle of meclizine (generic bonine) at sam's club for $5.91 (100 pills). i took 2 each morning of our trip when i got up (i'd started taking them 2 days before) and i had no problems at wdw. however, i too know my limitations and i did NOT try mission space (got deathly ill on it last year and stayed that way for 2-3 hours afterward) or the tea cups. i did ride soarin, test track, ToT, rockin' roller coaster, space mountain, btmrr, dinosaur and EE. most of them more than once, lol. hope this is helpful :)

Sea Bands can be puchased at most drug stores, they are wrist bands that use pressure points to relieve motion sickness.

I have also heard good things about ginger pills, I will look into these for our next cruise, Thanksgiving 2007! I'm wondering about ginger tea? Will that work also? DD is not so good with swallowing pills, that is why the wrist bands work so well for her.

We have also used the patches (available by perscription only) that go behind your ear. They worked well for me, but they made my husband's throat and eyes very dry to the point of misery. DD was too young to use the patches.

I bought ginger candy at gnc. they had a couple different flavors like applce and cinnamon. My daughter and I don't swallow pills either!

I use Bonnie also and works for me but still makes me tired. On the Disney cruise used the Bonnie and drank lots of gingerale, ate 2 boxex of ginger snaps and had ginger candy. I thought the ginger candy was terrible tasting but I was not sick at all. Now I take a bonnie at night starting a few days before the trip and I seen to be ok just a little tired. I notice I am more prone to being sick if I am warm and have not eaten. In the car eating and air conditioning helps me.
