Downton Abbey

Tom and Mary will be good friends and help with finances etc together and keep His Lordship in check. I think Edith will be pregnant and her man will not be seen again. Rose is a wild child and I would send her to India with Susan and Mrs. O'Brian! Also ?? what Edith signed but her beau worked hard to get His Lordship to like him. That would be strange if he planned this mess as his way out. We just don't know. Mary will get her groove back soon IMO.

Does anyone think Thomas and Baxter are siblings? It was clear by their chats last night that they have something on each other.

Mrs. Hughes and Anna were foolish to believe Mr. Bates would let that go. He's out for blood!

They did already seem like they knew each other - I wondered if I somehow missed an episode where they met LOL.

How much you want to bet the auditor that will stay at the Abbey will have something to do with the document Edith signed?

i was thinking the same thing!

If you like Downtown Abbey how about watching this to see the real lives of servants in the big houses. Seventeen hour days where not uncommon!!!!!!

Thanks very much for this link! I just finished watching it - interesting and informative.

As to last night's (US) episode, I agree with the posts above mine that Thomas and Baxter are connected. I think he put her name in for the job in the first place, so at least someone he knows, even if not a family member.

I'm torn on the Bates thing, because I wanted him to know that Anna wasn't turning against him, and I wanted her to have his comfort to heal, but I'm so afraid he'll do something stupid. She does not need him in prison again! I'm actually liking him less that I used to. I think he's changed.

I don't know what's up with the Edith thing. Technically she's not an heir, right? So I don't see how she can legally sign anything that would involve Downton, but I don't know what it could be. And was that a doctor's office she went to in London, instead of where she said she was going? Maybe she's the one who's pregnant, when I thought it was going to be Anna.

I thought the same thing about Edith ending up pregnant. I'm not sure if maybe we are all looking too much into the document. I watched last weeks episode again and she did look it over a few times.

I wish we knew what Edith signed! And yes, I also think she's pregnant, as soon as I saw the Dr sign. I did think it was going to be Anna, so i am glad Anna's not. Will Tom really leave w/Baby Sybil? So now that Mary missed out w/Lord Gillingham, will she be focused on this guy now staying w/them?

I LOVE THIS SHOW!!!

One last thing.... Before, we were talking about how the cast looks off screen... I hardly recognized these 2!

Wow! It really took me a bit to figure out who they were! :rotfl:

I think it's funny that everyone (including me) was telling Edith to read the document first! I think that is going to come into play down the line. I also think she went to the Drs because she is pregnant. Oh Edith, Edith, Edith! :sad2:

I love Mrs Hughes! She rocks. I think she and Carson have a bit thing for each other though neither will admit it. ;)

I'll bet Edith is pregnant. That would give her a good storyline, especially since she's carrying on with a married man. I would not be surprised if Tom and Sybbie went to America. How many more awkward dinner scenes are we going to have to endure? He does seem to be very knowledgeable about the farming, though, so maybe they'll keep him around to educate Mary.

What's the guy's name who tried out to be a chef? I'm thinking he might get closer to Daisy, since they're spending so much time working together.

Ugh, Bates is the worst. Way to make your wife's assault all about you. And way to be such a volatile person that she's willing to bury the assault because she can't trust you not to make things worse. He's a prig and a bully. And worst of all, from a viewer's point of view, he's boring.

Oh that's you're take? I can see how you might get that. I happen to love Bates and Anna! I don't see him making it about him at all. I think in this day and age most husbands would feel that way - back then? Oh yeah! I see it as his heart is breaking for Anna.

I agree. It's not all about him. I think ANY man would feel murderous if someone raped their wife or daughter. I think Bates is deep waters, which can come off as aloof and slightly rude, I guess. I don't think Anna's reaction was so unusual, given the times. Back in that day, most husband's would have blamed the wife for "allowing" it to happen. Even today, there is a certain contingency of men who actually believe that if a woman doesn't want it to happen, she can just keep her legs closed and stop the assault. Of course, they would be morons.

I love Bates. He is a brooder. He hated that Br(sp) man from the start! Yes I bet Edith is pregnant! We never saw Edith's beau's wife who was supposed to be in an insane hospital. I wonder if he is a spy or Nazi! I love the relationship between Isobel and the dowager. They have the love/hate thing. Tom I bet will stay and they will find him a love interest. No way he and Mary get together. She is snooty but like her still the same.

I like Bates too. I think that he cares very deeply but he's also one to fly off the handle.

First, I should say that Anna is great and Joanne Froggatt is fantastic. I also don't mind in the least that Bates is upset. But I have two complaints, one on a character level and one on a meta level:

On a character level, I think he's an emotional bully. He insists that he is righteous, but his righteousness lacks empathy. I don't blame in at all for being so confused about his wife shutting down. But I think, for instance, the way he handled the situation with Mrs. Hughes was appalling. When he got a sense of what was happening, instead of taking it to his wife and talking with her, he made her promise, then swear, then swear on her mother's grave. The scene was bordering on vicious and drew me from sympathy with Bates towards finding him, again, a bully.

I think the avclub puts it far better than I [with brackets for DIS appropriate language]:

"That being said, I am giving Downton Abbey a bit too much credit. Bates has been one of the show’s greatest flaws right since the beginning—a violent man we’re supposed to believe has a heart of gold, a man who has shown himself to be manipulative, controlling, and coercive. But the show doesn’t seem to notice his flaws—or, rather, it showcases them as strengths, instead. In this episode, I think we’re supposed to see Bates’ righteous indignation at being shut out from his wife as a kind of virtue; his bullying Mrs. Hughes as an expression of love. I call [bananas]. I know Anna loves Bates, and to some degree, that makes it easier to overlook his flaws—but literally, his wife is terrified to tell him because she is afraid he will do something violent. Mrs. Hughes and Anna, on top of their myriad other sufferings, have to maintain a lie to keep Bates in line. And then to go on right away and confront Anna about it—forcibly, again!—and to somehow make it about his suffering! [Heavens], Bates, get a [bloody] grip."

On a more meta level, my complaint is with Julian Fellows. Anna's rape has really not been about her, but about those around her. It's been about giving other characters growth, not her. (Insofar as she's changed, it's only been due to the influences of outside characters--we have no idea how this has shaped her, just an idea of how far she'll go to protect her husband.) Basically, I think the writers had Anna raped to give her husband a storyline, and that grosses me out a bit.

Pretty much sums up what I think!

Again I don't think that at all - he had no idea why Anna turned away from him and then he overheard her talking to Mrs. Hughes and knew something horrific happened to her. If that was your spouse or child don't tell me you wouldn't resort to "bully" tactics to find out what happened to them!! And I'm sure even had he not been so forceful she would have eventually told him. Bates, Anna and Mrs. Hughes aren't the bad guys here! The rapist is. I think - for the time period - Bates not placing any blame or shame on Anna is very modern day! His rage and want for revenge is very normal in any era.
