Again I don't think that at all - he had no idea why Anna turned away from him and then he overheard her talking to Mrs. Hughes and knew something horrific happened to her. If that was your spouse or child don't tell me you wouldn't resort to "bully" tactics to find out what happened to them!! And I'm sure even had he not been so forceful she would have eventually told him. Bates, Anna and Mrs. Hughes aren't the bad guys here! The rapist is. I think - for the time period - Bates not placing any blame or shame on Anna is very modern day! His rage and want for revenge is very normal in any era.
I have to agree. You are looking at the situation in modern day terms and you can't. You have to put yourself back into that time period and that's how it was.
