The last 3 years we have been lucky enough to go to Disney and stay in our DVC resort. We are currently in the process of selling our DVC. I've become spoiled on resort accomodations, we have been in a 2 bdrm villa and I'm worried about downsizing to a normal room. We have 2 adults and 3 kids and we would like to stay at POR, but unsure if we will feel to cramped after being so sprawled out the last several years. Any thoughts?

My 13 year old ds said he would rather stay onsite in a small room than offsite and sprawl out! Gotta love that! :)

Of course you will feel cramped because you won't have a kitchen, living room, extra bedroom, minus 2 bathrooms, or washer/dryer but you will be at WDW. :goodvibes

I went from a room at POR to a 1BR at AKV. I would have felt VERY cramped going back the other way. Would you consider staying offsite? There are some real bargains on condos or even at other timeshares. Vistana Villages has a $199/3 day special on 1BR villas right now. That's $225 with taxes for all 3 days.

Great deal! I, too, would go offsite in this case.

Have fun no matter what you choose, LeahA.

In all honesty, yes you will probably feel cramped if you are used to a 2 bedroom villa. I am assuming that you have stayed in a regular hotel room before though...you should feel just about as cramped as that, but a little less even, as WDW has decent sized rooms plus the roomy bathroom and dressing areas. I am sure you will survive. POR is a beautiful resort! I am staying for my 2nd time this coming January. :thumbsup2

Have you considered the family suites at ASMu?

We usually stay in our OKW 2-Br accommodation, but we sometimes tag a few days onto the front of our trip and stay in the ASMu family suite. Our kids are college and high school age, so definitely we are more like five adults.

It still gives us two bathrooms, a curtained privacy area for dressing, a bedroom for parent privacy ;), and the kitchenette. The living room sleeps four, but with the three kids, everyone gets their own bed. We push the two single beds (lounge chair and ottoman) against the wall at opposite ends of the living room and use them for additional sofa seating during the day.

What about renting DVC points? It ends up being pretty ecnomical. When I priced renting points for a AKL villa(it was a studio though) it was actually cheaper than a room at Coronado Springs.

The space difference between the two is night and day. How do you feel about it? What do your kids think? Would you rather than not go at all? I'm thinking you are up for trying a regular room and you can definitely have a wonderful vacation at a lovely, fun resort. It's going to be wayyyyy different, that is for sure, but it will end up being what you make it to be.:thumbsup2

Good luck!

pp's speak the truth....even the difference between an OKW studio and a room at POR is pretty marked... a 2 bedroom? you will not feel like you're getting a good deal it is TIGHT for 5 people-
why not rent points to stay DVC,or rent a slightly offsite condo? I hear some great things about some of them, that even exceeds Disney quality(gasp, can it be true?)
I had my kids all prepped for the reality of offsite trip this upcoming year, but another plan worked out,and we are staying onsite again.
But some nearby ones look really nice, and affordable!

It would depend on the age of your kids. If the youngest is over 9, I'd say you won't ever be able to stay at POR again. The trundle is meant for a very young child. I have to agree with other PP's and suggest you rent points.

I just returned from a 6-day stay at POR. While the trundle is indeed smaller than a regular bed it was perfectly OK for my 11 year old DD and her 10 year old friend. They took turns sleeping on it :). I guess it really depends on the height of the child.

We stayed at Coronado Springs for 3 nights last November for 3 nights before checking into AKLV Kidani. Our prior stays were in OKW and Saratoga Springs but in 1 bedroom units, not 2 bedroom units. We have 3 kids who were at the time 11, 8 and 2 years old. The hardest part for me was having family members who woke up later. So I would have to walk around and be very quiet and grab a bite to eat and drink coffee sitting at the desk using the computer in near darkness. There was no balcony/patio area to escape to either. BUT, if you have older kids and only use the room to sleep in and spend little time in the room it might not be so bad. I would consider staying in a moderate again but only for a few days. Any longer than that I would miss the kitchen and washer/dryer and roominess of a DVC.

Have you ever thought about Ft. Wilderness Cabins? They are priced in the POR range and have more room than a regular hotel room plus they have a fully equipped kitchen and deck that you can cook out on. We stayed there this summer and this is by far my favorite resort and I am a DVC owner.

All great suggestions! My kids are 7/10/13. I have looked at the All Star Music suites and the FW cabins. I have also looked at offsite condos. I guess I need to really think about this some more before I make my decision.

what about bonnet creek.....I just priced a room there for December and it was $192 for a 1 bedroom...2 bedroms are available too....appear to have much nicer furnishings than the dvc renovated rooms. the rooms are bigger than dvc and it's rated as a 5 star resort......even the grand floridian couldn't quite earn that 5th star.

We are headed back to POR in a few days. Last year our middle daughter (then 13) slept on the trundle. It was a little short, but she propped her feet on a pillow and was fine. This year we will bring an air mattress. We love POR. Of course, space is limited, but I think the key is to provide organization. I brought a hanging shelf for the closet rod (something you might use for sweaters, but folds flat). We velcro that to the closet rod and each of us girls has two compartments for "stuff". We each have a dollar store basket to place our lanyard, wallet, keys, etc... when we enter the room. We were very happy at POR and will return for 8 nights.

You sound like us:) the past 3 trip to WDW we too have staying in a 2bed villa, 2x at SSR and 1 at AKV. We have 3 kids and in the past have taken a Grandparent. Our next trip will just be our family and I excited as we could stay in 1 room and it would be quite a bit cheaper, I booked POR for next Aug and that was that.

Then I started looking at pictures and questioning my decision, POR is beautiful and staying anywhere at WDW is better than no trip. But I did start to wonder how we would manage after being SO spoiled. I just switched my reservation to YC and while its still 1 room I do feel alot better about it. I am also happier knowing that the 3rd child will have better sleeping arrangments as I did have a few plangs of guilt about the trundle. Not to mention I really would prefer a queen bed myself:)

Allstars were out for us, just not my style and I don't want to rent a car so I really felt the cabins would leave us stranded. Good luck with whatever you decide to do. Only you can really grasp your families needs, and what is fine for many won't always work for you.

Happy Planning:)
