Downloading a recorder on iPad?

We bought a used iPad ( the first one) for ds who is autistic to use for communicating with. The app I want to download allows you make picture choices and record your voice. What I found out is that the first iPad doesn't seem to have a recorder but I could download one. I was wondering if anyone has done this and if they have one they could recommend. Thanks, Linda

The first iPad doesn't have a microphone, so you need to add a headphone with an attached microphone to be able use a recording app at all.

The current operating system has a recording app built in.

Both the iPad1 and iPad2 DO have built in microphones. As far as a recorded goes I believe the iPhones have a recorder but the iPads do not. There are some in the app store but I have not experimented with any of them.

I was mistaken - I have an iPad 2 and was under the impression that the original iPad with 3G had a microphone, but the wi-fi version did not until the iPad2 version, which has a camera.
I have an iPhone, which does have a recording app called Voice Memos built in, I could have sworn that the iPad 2 also had that app, but just checked and it doesn’t.

I am active in several forums where people are using iPads and iPod touch for communication. Many people have found that the apps with built in voices are much easier to use. Because you don’t have to worry about recording things for the buttons, it is much easier to get up and running. The ones with built in voices are more expensive because the developers have to pay to license the voices. Some apps are more complete than others and the more complete ones are usually the more expensive.
If the app you want to use doesn’t have built in speech and you will need to record, I’d suggest contacting the developer to see what they suggest.

We use an iPad 1 for my son, Sean, with the Proloquo to go program.

He just started with this about 6-7 months ago, and he is 21 years old.

I first heard about this application on DIS, and bought it for an iTouch, but that was to hard to use, because it is so small. (in our case). Over a year later, we got an iPad, and that has seemed easier. Some families have the program on both devices (no extra cost to do this).


ALL I can say is, that this is a MIRACLE! And he is an adult now, and can finally speak to us a little bit. He comes in from another room, and pushes "I want to listen to music", or "I go to school on Wednesday and Friday". or "I have to use the bathroom" We continue to work on adding new words (EASY!) and photos. He can now ask for foods, drinks, etc. i am happy not to be recording words in my voice. The program has a few voice choices. (it is funny to listen to the British one, haha) But there is a kid girl and boy, and an adult woman and man. We use the adult man, because it is supposed to be Sean's voice.......

Important to realize that Tap To Talk is free, but requires a $99 a year subscription if you want to personalize it at all. I’ve seen comments from people who tried it and realized that they really could not use it without personalizing it.
When you count $99 a year into the cost, it become one of the more expensive communication apps.

There is one called Look to Learn at $14.99 that I have heard pretty good things about for people who don’t need a lot of features. It does allow you to record a voice for the pictures from inside the app.

A middle priced and popular app is called iCommunicate at $49.99 for iPad. It does have a built in voice and has a large library of symbols that can be used. iCommunicate has an iPod/iPhone version and a separate iPad version, so using it on both would require purchasing 2 versions.

Proloquo2Go is one of the more expensive ones at $189, but is very full featured and also very adaptable. It has a number of voices available and a large library of symbols, plus the ability to add pictures. It was the first iPod app developed and is one of the most popular. It can be used on iPod touch, iPhone and iPad, so the user could have several communication devices with the same app purchase.

TouchTalk is $149, and comes with one set of communication ’sets’ , but you can purchase other sets. It has voices to choose from and many symbols. There is a separate iPod/iPhone version and iPad version, so if someone wants to use it on both, they have to purchase both. There are no reviews of this app on the iTunes app store.
