Down the Rabbit Hole – a Vegan Alice and Omnivore Mad Hatter Taste Wonderland

So many great reviews! We really want to try Tusker House for lunch for sure. You guys are the cutest couple! I love you in your little Rescue Rangers/AK getup. Very cute!! :goodvibes:goodvibes

Haha thanks so much! I was trying to go for the whole Safari thing; I know I'm a huge dork! I've been checking out your dining report as well...You had great dinner outfits, as well!

Originally, we had scheduled a late breakfast at Boma for this morning of our trip. It was a leisurely day for us, so I didn’t think it would be a hassle to get to Animal Kingdom Lodge when we pleased, and then make our way back in the same manner. When the day drew closer though, we both realized that it just takes too much time and effort to get all the way over there just for breakfast! We went to the concierge to see what could be done, and were able to get a 9:30am reservation at Kouzzina instead!

I had originally had this restaurant on my ADR list, but had heard mixed reviews and second thought it. I’m very glad we were able to go, because it turned out to be our first of two breakfasts at Kouzzina during our stay!

We arrived and were surprised at the quietness of the place, even though it was later in the morning (for Disney standards, that is) and outside on the Boardwalk there were many people grabbing something from Boardwalk Bakery. Our hostess took us to a nice little booth towards the back of the restaurant; shortly after, our waiter came.

He took our drink order and went to get a chef. Ordering was different here, because we had gotten used to the buffet breakfasts! With the Deluxe Plan, breakfast at an ala carte restaurant includes a drink and an entrée; that narrowed things down for me a lot!

Jeremy had ordered the Berry Smoothie, which he mentioned was very good. He’s a big smoothie-type of person, so I trust his judgment on this one! I got regular coffee with Soy milk. They had Press Pot coffee in a larger carafe, but that was an extra charge and I didn’t want to waste my own money on coffee!

The Chef came out to talk to me and made some suggestions. Even though many of the menu items I had been looking over sounded interesting and different than the usual fare at Disney, what the chef suggested was mainly just the Steel Cut oatmeal or fruit. I LOVE oatmeal, but I didn’t want it on vacation. After looking over the menu, I asked her if I could combine a few things and take off some ingredients…she was VERY willing to do any of that for me! How exciting when you can create your own menu item!

Jeremy ordered the Spinach, Tomato and Feta Scramble with Roast Potatoes and Chicken Sausage. I think it was more food than he had eaten for breakfast all week! He loved the addition of feta to the eggs instead of normal cheddar. He liked the sausage, but not being a morning meat type of person, didn’t wind up eating too much of it.

IMG_1863.jpg

I had a little of this and a little of that, which amounted to the Vegetable Flatbread, no eggs or feta, with an addition of Sweet Potato Hash. WOW. WOOOOOW. It came out and was so pretty, and turned out to taste even better than it looked. There was an Olive Oil drizzle over the lettuce and sweet potatoes, and everything was warm and filling. It wasn’t too heavy though, since it was only sweet potatoes and spinach primarily! I ate half of it and took the rest to save for later!

Kouzzina really exceeded my expectations. I am a fan of Mediterranean food, but had read some mixed reviews and didn’t come into the place with much faith in them. I had here when it was Spoodles, and I can say that while I wasn’t impressed with it them, I will ALWAYS come back now that it’s Kouzzina!

Our Out of Pocket total would have been $33.08. Like I mentioned earlier, we liked it so much we came back later in the week!

As for Sci Fi the Atomosphere just can't be beat! They ran old horror movie clips and "Let's go to the concesion stand" songs. Pretty sweet, but it had about a 45 minute loop and then started all over again. 1) I think they could find more footage, so I don't think that was the problem, 2) you know people are going to be there for more than 45 minutes, and 3) wouldn't the waiters have gone on strike from watching the same real every day of work?

The spinach dip was really good, the shake was great, and the ribs were dissapointing, but like my wife said, I was pretty full to begin with when the ribs came. But if you are a meat lover, the place to get the ribs probably isn't Sci Fi! Overall, the atmosphere made it for me!!! Hope you enjoy!

Yours truly,
One Stuffed and Scared Hatter

Ooo !

That sweet potato hash looks delicious ! :woohoo:

We've read and heard SO many bad reviews of Kouzzina's that we've been kind of scared to try the place.

I think we need to reconsider !

My remarks of Kouzzina will mirror my wife's! It was a great place to go when you have already done your Character Breakfast and got the "Must Do's" out of the way. It is the perfect spot for a relaxed, easy, great breakfast! They were very nice and accomidating for my wife (which is a must to get the Hatter's approval!) and they just plain had good food! I'd put it on your breakfast menu for a pool day or an easier day.

I would recommend the feta scramble, it was excellent, but my wife was right, there was enough food there for 2 people (so if you don't have a dinning plan, share it!). The smoothie was really good, really fresh and more on the fruit side than the fake surgar side, which I like!

Yours truly,
Kozzy as a Hatter

Are Kouzzina's Smoothies all juice smoothies? Was there already no dairy or was that a substitution?? That flatbread looks great. Can't wait to go! :yay::yay::yay:

Girrrrrl if you're a dork then what am I???:rotfl: Umm a major dork!!! :rotfl2:

Thanks for the compliment! It was nice going out to dinner and not having to bring a jacket or sweater or something! Even in the summer in NY you need something :rotfl:

I was the exact same way, and if it hadn't been for us getting a last minute breakfast reservation there, we really would have missed out. I'm not exactly sure why there have been so many negative reviews...unless there are just THAT many people that don't want to branch out beyond scrambled eggs for breakfast and grilled chicken for dinner!

Ugh NO! Unfortunately they are made with yogurt...they didn't even offer to substitute. But that was just a minor setback - this and Boma were my absolute favorite by a long shot for breakfast!

Oh I completely understand - I bring a sweater everywhere with me during dinner...and I live in the south!

The breakfast flatbread at Kouzzina's looks fabulous!! Sometimes I like to make my own creations too. As long as you have a waiter who listens. I got a waiter at Olive Garden who just looked at me blankly. He had no clue!!

That's so funny - that actually happened to me yesterday at California Pizza Kitchen! The waiter finally figured out what I wanted...and what I got turned out to be a $16 dollar pizza when I got my check! Now don't get me wrong, it was delicious and I had some to take home, but he charged me for every single addition or substitution!

So YES, it's awesome when you get someone, like at Kouzzina, that can make it happen stress free :goodvibes

Oh girl.
You know I love your reviews, but please stop giving me MORE breakfast reservations to make. I already booked a reservation for Boma breakfast because of you, and now I almost feel like booking for Kouzinna. We're staying at Saratoga Springs. We have a kitchenette. My mother keeps telling us to make sure we get some groceries and make our own breakfasts to cut down on the costs of food, but you're making it so hard ;)

Glad you enjoyed your Kouzinna breakfast. It sounded delicious, and I love sweet potatoes!

Oh, I know! It's a weakness of mine! Had it not been for all the breakfasts, we probably could have done a Signature each night! BUT...I just couldn't stay away! And...I really am obsessed with Sweet Potatoes lately; I eat about one a day!

After breakfast, we strolled around Epcot, making our way to Mexico to begin our liquid tour of each country. What lushes we must have looked like though, because they were not quite selling alcohol at this time of the morning at La Cava Del Tequila!

IMG_1869.jpg

Not to be deterred in our quest to sample the world, we instead made our way to China for a little taste of the orient. And what a delicious journey it turned out to be! We decided to just split something, and ordered a Green Tea Plum Wine Slush from the Joy of Tea. It was tasty, refreshing, and exactly what was needed on this incredibly hot day! Also, it was fairly strong, so I’m very glad we each didn’t get our own.

We spotted a PhotoPass guy, and stopped him for a few quick photos. After the standard shots, we asked if we could do a few “unconventional” poses. Even though he seemed confused, he consented to letting us be silly for a bit. Jeremy had the brilliant idea to practice some of our Karate moves…because “When in China…” or however the saying goes! Little did he know, I’m a master at this art!

I believe the saying is "When in Rome...." But as Confusious say "when American see Chinese dragon he think he must be Bruce Lee." So with that inspiration we tried to summon the Karate Kid within us. Unfortunately, Mandi got the best of me and swept the leg! (Karate Kid quote for those who don't know!).

But the Plum drink was very tart, but refreshing because it was wicked hot! We will see the Hatter's Kung Fu come back for revenge!

A Kung Fu Master Hatter

At 12pm on the dot, we were inside the Mexico Pavilion. This is probably one of my favorites in the World Showcase…they just did such a good job of theming! The new bar, La Cava Del Tequila, is located to the right as you step down into the “marketplace” area. Apart from a guy at the bar, we were the only ones that had ventured in yet!

I loved the atmosphere immediately. It was very intimate and cozy, and even though it was pretty tiny in there, it gave you the feel of exclusivity…like it was a secret not many people knew about. We sat on a very comfy couch in the corner, and a friendly waitress came to give us a menu that consisted of some delicious looking appetizers, a few mixed drinks, and lots and lots of tequila and other liquors.

IMG_1881.jpg

Here's Jeremy checking out the menu, trying to appear dashing and mainly just looking...silly. I checked out the menu myself to see what our food options were. The appetizers looked fantastic, but we had lunch reservations in an hour and didn’t want to be full when we got there. The apps included Mahi Mahi Tacos with Mango, avocado and Chipotle mayo; Chicken and Black bean Tostadas; Blue Crab Tostadas; Guacamole with flour tortilla chips; and a Trio of Flan that included chocolate, Guajillo pepper, and Margarita. YUM!!

IMG_1883.jpg

Even before we had a menu in hand though, we already knew what we were going to try. We chose the Margarita Flight to share between us. It looked colorful, and big! After my drink in China, I knew I was going to have to pace myself if I wanted to make it through the day, so sharing a few Margarita shooters seemed the perfect way to do this!

IMG_1885.jpg

It included 5 mini margs, with flavors that included Prickly Pear, Cucumber, Avocado, Wild Passion Fruit and Jalapeno. The Avocado was the overwhelming winner for both of us. Jeremy isn’t the biggest fan of avocado, but this was slightly creamy, mild, and blended really well with the tequila. We both thought the Jalapeno was disgusting, which is sad because I am THE pepper girl! I love hot, spicy foods and was really looking forward to this drink. Unfortunately it tasted like liquefied, RAW Jalapenos…mainly just very GREEN tasting.

IMG_1886.jpg

We finished most of them off, and stumbled our way out of Mexico and back into the daylight. All in all, I was a big fan of The Cave, and will be back very soon!

The Cave was fantastic! I mirror what my wife said! The decor was really intimate and it was all around well done! The Margaritas were a little strange and there weren't many that we would have tried again. The avacado one was pretty tasty but I would just recommend getting your own margarita and leaving the flight to the birds!

Yours truly,
A Buzzed Hatter

Hi! I'm just joining in and I'm loving your reviews and pics :) How does the photo pass CD work? Do you get a card like normal and then access them from the CD when you get home? Do you have to pay extra or ask for the fun pictures (like the one with Tinkerbell)? My mom and I are going this fall, and I think the CD seems like a great way to get lots of fun pictures of us :) Thanks!

So glad you got to try the margarita flight! My sister and I both agreed that we are definitely getting one when we're there. It's on our permanent list of must-dos. Great pictures!

Great report! I used to serve at the Rose and Crown when Chef Christian was head chef there, and he used to make the most amazing things for my guests with allergies!
