Down the Rabbit Hole – a Vegan Alice and Omnivore Mad Hatter Taste Wonderland

Hi! I'm just joining in and I'm loving your reviews and pics :) How does the photo pass CD work? Do you get a card like normal and then access them from the CD when you get home? Do you have to pay extra or ask for the fun pictures (like the one with Tinkerbell)? My mom and I are going this fall, and I think the CD seems like a great way to get lots of fun pictures of us :) Thanks!

I went onto the Disney PhotoPass website and pre-ordered the CD. (http://www.disneyphotopass.com/) Pre-ordering it gave you a discount of about $50. This way, you can take unlimited pictures while in the park, and not have to worry about spending a ton on each picture. It was $99, and well worth it!

So glad you got to try the margarita flight! My sister and I both agreed that we are definitely getting one when we're there. It's on our permanent list of must-dos. Great pictures!

I think I'll just get one huge Avocado Margarita next time hahaha - plus a big order of chips and salsa to be able to tolerate it all!

Great report! I used to serve at the Rose and Crown when Chef Christian was head chef there, and he used to make the most amazing things for my guests with allergies!

Rose and Crown is my next report! I believe Christian was the chef when we went also, and he personally served me all my food! Great guy :goodvibes

I've really enjoyed reading your reviews :goodvibes

I have "unusual allergies" so finding safe food is very important. I've added Mama's and Boma's to my list :goodvibes

I CAN'T BELIEVE I'VE JUST NOW FOUND THESE REVIEWS! I haven't been on the boards since our trip in early May, but I am so excited to have found these!

I wish I had gotten the dessert you recieved at Mama Melrose's. It looks so much better than the bowl of vanilla Tofutti I got.

And that poor chef at 1900 Park Fare.. Using Ener-G egg replacer to make an omelette :rotfl2:

Your 'Ohana meal turned out awesome, considering Chef TJ wasn't there that night! I had the same dilemma a few years ago.

The Tokyo Dining meal looks fantastic. And that's incredibly disappointing about Restaurant Marrakesh. I haven't heard any good stories from vegans or vegetarians regarding this restaurant. So I think I'll stay away, even though I really want to see the inside. :sad2:

I've always been scared of all the breakfast buffets, thinking they wouldn't be worth the money. But your Boma breakfast looks great! How awesome that they made you a tofu scramble.

Going to the Sci-Fi Dine in for a shake and fries sounds like a great idea. Me and my boyfriend did the same thing at 50s Prime Time!

I'm going to have to go back and read through everything - I just skimmed this first time around. But I can't wait to see more!

Great reviews. :goodvibes Can't wait to hear what drinks you discover as you tour WS. The starters look yummy.

You know it's really weird how we can all go to the same places and get COMPLETELY different things for each of our experiences! Take Mama Melrose and Ohana for example! I also commented about your Beaches and Cream experience - I was able to get the Veggie Wrap, even though they told ya'll it was all pre-made. I think it just really depends on the mood of the chef that day. :goodvibes

I think they view any allergy as unusual, that's for sure! I'm really glad I've been able to help you out - this forum was my life saver and I continue to be obsessed with it!

Hey I am joining in! Your reviews are great so far!

Thanks so much!

Well I wasn't as much as a trooper as I would have liked to be, but I feel I can pick up where I left off for my next stay at the World!

As we passed through each country, food and drinks caught my eye but I couldn’t give in to the temptation as they called out, “Eat Me! Drink Me!” We had a lunch reservation to make, and I knew I’d be full if I ate any pretzels or had even another drink.

rose-and-crown-pub-1.jpg

We arrived at the Rose and Crown just in time, but there was still a wait. After about 15 minutes our pager went off and we were taken inside to our table. It’s a nice little pub, and they’ve added small touches to make it feel a bit more homey – dartboards on the wall, stained glass windows, and wood paneling throughout.

Our waiter took our drink order, and while Jeremy kept with our themed day of drinking a native drink of the country we happened to be in, I just couldn’t. I’m not a beer person, as much as it pains me to say this being Irish/German. Could that be any more of an Oxymoron?

IMG_1891.jpg

Here is our plethora of beverages during our lunch, starting with water and Cokes for both of us. Jeremy ordered a Pint of Bass Ale (I never can say or write the word Pint and not think of Merry and Pippin from Lord of the Rings – “They Come in Pints? I’m getting One!”) ANYWAY, I ordered the Magical Star Cocktail. I wasn’t going to – it seemed just a bit too…frou frou, for lack of a better term. But that glow cube pulled me over to the dark side in the end, and you know what? It was delicious! It contained Organic Mango and Passion Fruit Liqueur, Coconut Rum, and Pineapple Juice. Really, what’s not to love about that combination?

The chef came out and talked to me about my options. While he definitely seemed hopeful that he would be able to take care of me, there weren’t too many options, either. I really think it’s weird that depending on the chef, the same restaurant will offer different items! I know someone that wrote a Disboards review ordered a tofu dish, but that wasn’t one of my options. Not that I minded – I was intrigued by the choices he had given me!

We both started off with the Apple and Stilton Salad. However, mine contained no Stilton. There was quite a big difference in the appearance. Jeremy’s looked so much tastier! They were both delicious though, and we both consumed them in their entirety.

IMG_1898.jpg

Next came up Jeremy’s entrée, and had I not known I would be getting fries with my meal as well, I would have made a grab for his! He got the “Famous” Fish and Chips, and I have to admit, that fish was HUGE and looked much better than most fish and chip dishes I’ve seen, even in England! He absolutely loved it – I think after a morning of drinking this was exactly what he needed to coat his tummy!

IMG_1895.jpg

Mine came out next this unique creation was a joint effort of the chef and myself. I ordered the Vegetarian Shephard’s Pie, no Mashed Potatoes (butter and cream), no cheese, with a substitution of French Fries. I also got a salad on the side, but I didn’t even touch this since I had already had a plate full of lettuce. Now, I wouldn’t get this dish again, but I would definitely get those fries again. They were fantastic and I think I accompanied them with a gallon of ketchup. They kept bringing out these tiny little tubs of it though, so I had to order about 5 of them! I just needed something hearty in my stomach, as well! Isn’t it amusing how vacations MAKE you eat food you never do at home? It’s almost a law or something.

IMG_1904.jpg

Desserts came next and Jeremy had decided on the Lemon Pie. He loved it, even though the picture doesn’t look in the least bit appetizing. It wasn’t too tart or too sweet, and was light enough to eat all of even after that big meal.

IMG_1902.jpg

I got Fruit and Rice Dream. The fruit was very good, and while I’m not a fan of Rice Dream, I was glad they had that option available for people that couldn’t have a dessert off the regular menu.

Our Out of Pocket total would have come to $83.10 before tip. That’s including our cocktails, as well. I will absolutely be back, but maybe just for a drink and snack at the bar! Wish so many places in Epcot to choose from, I’ll give the UK the #1 spot for French Fries, and pick another spot for an actual meal. Great Experience all around, though!

I really hate that they took the vegetable curry dish off the menu at Rose and Crown. It was SO good, and I would have loved to go back for it.

I feel as if I were home in Wonderland as the Hatter returned to Mary ole England and his support of the White Queen of England at the Rose and Crown! As my wonderful wife so wonderfully put it, drinks were the order of the day and we made no exception at lunch. The Rose and Crown allowed me the taste of Bass Ale...now yes it is very nice that they come in pints! But sadly they do not come in "Top Hat" sizes, otherwise the Hatter would have ordered a 10/6 instead of just a pint!

The fish n Chips brought me back to one of my favorite places on earth...the UK. It tasted just like Ireland or England and they did such a good job at making the surroundings look just like an 800 year old Pub that I had to remind myself as we left that I was in Disney and not over the pond. Now you have to realize that the food was not spectacular...it just tasted like it does in England....take that for what it is worth! I loved it!

Yours truly,
A Hatter at Home!

It's really a shame that all the Disney restaurants don't have one or two vegan items set up for each restaurants that the chefs know how to whip up.

Someday I hope it gets easier. I guess it's good he didn't say sorry I can't do anything. He at least sounded like he tried.

He really did try, and even though it wasn't the best, it wasn't bad either! From what I've heard over the years, Rose and Crown has limited their menu options to a smaller amount, but I definitely agree with your idea to have at least one vegetarian and vegan option (not to mention gluten-free, etc) available and on-hand should they need it!

After lunch we were a bit exhausted. All the drinks, combined with all the walking, had tired us out a bit! We decided our next stop would be our last, and then we would head to the pool to re-energize before getting ready for dinner at Jiko!

Italy seemed the perfect spot to relax, take in the sights, and not be mobbed by the throngs of people that gravitate to France when it comes to snacks and drinks. I could think of no better drink than a Bellini, so Jeremy went to grab them and I found a lovely little spot in the shade.

IMG_1906.jpg

It couldn’t possibly get any better than this! The Bellini was delicious – they didn’t load it down with too much peach puree, so it still had the Champagne kick that I wanted. Even though in plastic-ware, it was still pretty as a picture, also!

IMG_1907.jpg

We took our time and then headed to change into swimsuits for some relaxation before our trek to Animal Kingdom for an African-themed evening! (By the way, I absolutely count Jiko as one of my “cultural” drinking experiences to check off my list!)

Glad you had a good time at the Rose and Crown !

I think it's our favorite place in all of Epcot. It's been our experience that the CM's there are the friendliest and most helpful folks in all of "the world".

We've spent more hours than I care to admit in that pub, chatting with the bartenders and fellow guests, munching on fish and chips and Scottish eggs and downing a pint or four...

Good times. :goodvibes

We really did like it, and will definitely be back for a Pint and a Cocktail! Maybe next time I'll try to be a bit more "British" in my drink order.

You should order Strongbow next time you go to Rose and Crown. Its Hard Cider and amazing.

I really hate that they took the vegetable curry dish off the menu at Rose and Crown. It was SO good, and I would have loved to go back for it.

I'm disappointed the curry is gone, too...I heard it was excellent. I was looking forward to trying it this year, but now we're going to skip Rose and Crown all together.

I'm glad he attempted to accommodate you, but I'm with MelanieC on this one. It really strikes me as odd that most restaurants, if not all, don't have a recipe or two on hand for the odd time a vegetarian or vegan comes in. Actually, come to think of it, vegetarians aren't uncommon anymore and vegans aren't really unusual these days, either. I'm always bumping into one here and there!

By the way the bellini looked delicious. That's my favorite drink of all time and I order them whenever I see them on the menu.

The vegetable curry is the dish that we got the most complaints about at the R&C. People just hated it. I think after about 10 months of serving it, I'd only had around 2 guests that actually enjoyed it. So it was a mutual decision between servers and the chefs to take it off the menu and to try something new. Sorry to disappoint!

That really surprises me. It was one of my favorite entrees during the trip I had it.
