Double post

There are some areas of Florida like Coral Springs and Parkland where the young children 1 year thru 21 years are at 48%of that cities population totals.

Areas like Naples, Marco Island,Sanibel,Davie,Weston,Plantation,DelRay Beach,Deerfield Beach,BocaRaton, and West Palm Beach seem to have more residents over the age of 55 than the younger set.

chrissyk--I can point you to some "family" neighborhoods.

I think it just all depends--and we are a nice area to retire. It's almost snowbird season. You'll be seeing lots more of the....snowbird crowd. ;)

Are the younger people more inland then, or maybe more along the gulf coast (Tampa, Clearwater, St. Pete?) :confused3 DH and I are still dismayed that our favorite neighborhood here is like 85% geriatric people with very few other young people/families thrown into the mix :( We're very willing to move to another part of FL if we can't find a young neighborhood in our area, so I'd love to hear any and all suggestions as to where else to look.

I live in Coral Springs and it's definitely for the younger and family set. We have lived here for almost 10 years and love it. Parkland's population has changed over the last 10 years and is definitely more family friendly now.

I disagree that Weston and Plantation have mostly older residents, especially Weston. Boca Raton is really a mix, you'll see a lot of older residents in the winter months; which was one of the things I disliked about living there.

Tamarac is just south of us and it's definitely for seniors. I agree that the cities on the Gulf coast, for the most part, have older residents. Marco Island has more of a mix now. Just do your research, there are a lot of nice communities in FL for younger couples and families.

Where would you like them to put you when you are "geriatric"?

Chrissy--the geriatrics will be moving out eventually. Our neighborhoods are still dealing with original residents from the 60s. ;).

The newer communities mainland do have more kids..and some of the canal communities seem to have a good share of children depending on the street.

My neighborhood has a good showing of kids in it as well as our share of the elder population. A neighbor just had a baby a couple of weeks ago :).

The OP means no offense.

We are a big snowbird community--and if you had children or wanted to have children...location is pretty important to be near other families sometimes.

I think this is a general thing in Florida actually.

We do have the communities in our area that would fit her specs.

The Treasure Coast seams to be getting younger... Port St. Lucie, Jensen Beach, Palm City, Stuart...

In a condo at least ;) If I don't go condo, I promise that I won't be the geriatric person who drives around all day looking for "covenant violations" in my subdivision, though :rotfl:

Cool! We had thought of the Treasure Coast...DH has the impression that it is more touristy, though. Is that so :confused3

It's true...I meant no offense :flower: I am just dismayed because the subdivision that we truly thought would be a "family" place was more of a giant retirement community, LOL!

I think that this was a general FL thing, but with so many people of all ages moving into FL from other areas, perhaps the demographics will change over time. This area just seems to skew towards the "snowbirds" presently I guess.

On your side I would agree...The main thoroughfare by you has several families on it--really is hit or miss.

The houses here do seem to be turning over, but not very quickly. There are a few families here and there, but mostly the houses are still owned by what I would deem the "original" residents. Who knows though...this could change over time.

chrissy we live in Jensen. I don't think it's that tourisity... in fact we really have to search for something to do on the weekends LOL very much a "bedroom community" IMO

we work & my kids go to school in Stuart. Stuart has a cute downtown but it's small.

it's quiet and small town but we like it pretty much. we moved up here from broward last year for my dh's job (he works for the Bonefish Grill)

oh and it's 90 minutes closer to Disney ;) It takes me 2 hours door to door ;)

Chrissy,

There are areas around Tampa that are filled with kids. Pinellas county has it's pockets of 'young areas' as well.

Very good friend lived in West Palm and felt it was a younger crowd, now lives in Jacksonville and feels it's great for a 30 something.

The area I'm in is a good mix, leaning towards more younger people.

PM me if you want more details...

Suzanne

Sorry to intrude.

How is the Brandon, Riverview, Temple Terrace area?

Any other nice areas not too far out from Tampa?

Thanks..

Aren't huge numbers of retirees moving to Florida? They have to live somewhere and I doubt that they all want to be in condos. But good luck finding a younger area. Maybe it would be easier in the bigger communities? :confused3
