I have a friend who moved just outside of Brandon into a community called Fish Hawk Ranch. It seems to be full of young families and she is very happy there.
We lived in Brandon when we lived in Florida. Fish Hawk Ranch is a great area - great new schools - lots of different price ranges too. Not too far from Tampa and only 45 minutes from WDW.
It's just east of Tampa and south of Brandon, off of I75. they've got a website www.fishhawkranch.com. Careful, even with broadband, it takes forever to load!
If you like the planned community thing, it's great. I lived in one up north and grew to hate it.
However, the butcher I use is just up the road from there-so I'd say from that aspect, I'd like it if I didn't drive 25 minutes to get to the butcher.
Aren't huge numbers of retirees moving to Florida? They have to live somewhere and I doubt that they all want to be in condos. But good luck finding a younger area. Maybe it would be easier in the bigger communities?
Yep. DW and I (and our retirement money) will be contrtibuting to the Florida economic picture as snowbirds in a few years. Hopefully I'll be able to see over my dashboard well enough not to annoy all of the youngsters.

That community looks very nice! Why did you grow to hate living in a planned community? It seems like it would be great, with lots of built-in neighbors who are basically the same age.
My reasons for hating it were more about me. The community I was in had single family homes, townhouses and condos. It was populated by a majority of SAHM's. The women in the single family homes looked down on the ones who lived in the townhomes. Then, you had the people who didn't work acting all elitist with those of us who did. I know that's not how planned communities are, but that was my experience and I soured on it.
I made a bunch of friends when I joined the community social club-at the time I was working part time with a high risk pregnancy. Everything was great. Then, when my son was a year old and I rejoined the full time work force, those same people copped an attitude that I was working.
I picked a nice townhome thinking 'great starter home', but my block was FILLED with retirees. Had it been filled with young families, I would have been satisfied.
The amenities were great-I loved that part of it.
In the end, things happen for a reason. I really was meant to be here-close to my mom and soon, my in laws.
