Double, Double, Toil & Trouble: a Halloween-inspired trip of “two’s” – an October 2016 TR

Glad you enjoyed Maggiano's - I've always been a fan. It's a great go-to for place with large groups. Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure I had a homecoming dinner there and my brother's graduation dinner there - they are super accommodating. My boyfriend just had an all-hands training for work last week that was at Maggiano's and he came home raving about the special catering apps they served throughout the afternoon and evening. He was actually bummed that he forgot to bring his bag of leftovers home with him. All that to say, if you have one nearby, definitely keep them in mind for really big groups and even catering for a party!

All caught up, your Italian food looks so good! Fun to see how excited your nieces and nephew are. They are lucky to have seasoned Orlando vacationers like you all to take them around! I love your dining reviews of all the places you all go to. Very good!

I'm all caught up. Finally got a chance to read your report. I've been saying I want to go to Magianno's for years. Now I really need to go. There's one not too far away from our house. :)

It's definitely worth a visit :thumbsup2. It's a much finer Italian dining experience than places like Olive Garden (which we love) and Romano's Macaroni Grill (which we thought was ho-hum). I was hoping we might have a Maggiano's near where we are living in MI, especially when its owned by the same corporation that owns Chili's (which we have right up the street), but our nearest Maggiano's is 45 minutes away. Boo. That's a long way to drive just for dinner.

Wow.. I've been meaning to get to Maggiano's and now I definitely will. I'll need to save like weeks worth of Weight Watchers points though.
Italian food is my cryptonite.

Promise me you'll splurge and order the crostata. Calories don't count on vacation, remember ;).

Gina next time you are looking at flights, look at southwest out of Columbus, Ohio. There are 5-6 nonstop flights to MCO per day and fairly cheap

Thank you, that's great to know!! We actually booked our October flights yesterday ($291 pp, round trip, on Jetblue nonstop to FLL, and that includes the fees to upgrade to even more space both ways, for both of us). But we will keep Columbus in mind for 2018.

Yum, Italian food is always coma inducing. But we enjoy it too. Maggiano's used to be very close to us, now, the only one I know of, is about 1/2 hour away. Ours serve family style, so it's interesting that they do single servings now. Maybe we'll visit one, one of these days. Hasn't been on our radar since moving out of our local neighborhood. Great pictures.

That is sweet of your DH. We hit 25 years last month, and I can't believe it's been that long. We only ate out dinner in a Mexican place, that we will not repeat. I hope you do have a beautiful vow renewal, in your happy place, or at least have something fun to do on your milestone wedding anniversary.

Carry on.

Happy belated anniversary!! :goodvibes There's nothing more worth celebrating than love: heaven knows the world needs more of that emotion.

Did I ask you yet what your October dates are for this year? Do we overlap at all? We're the 14th to the 21st.

:love:The crostata looks divine

It's funny but we rarely head onto international drive to eat, but that dessert could surely tempt me.

Preach!! It was SO GOOD :worship:. Ever since I posted that entry, I've been dying for apple pie :o.

We are up and down I-Drive a zillion times each vacation......I just love that road. It's so cheesy but so much fun.....and it leads to two of my happy places (SeaWorld and Universal) :goodvibes.

Your meal at Maggiano's looked amazing! Definitely somewhere we need to try!

Absolutely! I think you'd be very pleased! ::yes::

I bet it would be a place for an amazing staff Christmas party, too :thumbsup2.

No, not really. I have my scrapbook of the trip and show it to them from time to time. But they're boys and really don't get all warm and fuzzy about Auntie Ruthie's memories.

Ah, but I bet they will as they grow older ::yes::. I know Jake is really starting to appreciate the albums and scrapbooks I have compiled over the course of the last 9 years: he always thought my picture taking was a tad tiresome, but now, he loves to show his girlfriend the places we've been and the things we've done. They're just a few years off that point of appreciation. How sweet of you to have provided them with such a cool experience when they were so little :goodvibes.

And today's adventure......

Since locating the secret button we have met several really nice Canadians.

I bet Orlando is chock full of Canucks right now, being March Break for most Canadians. I hope you are having a spectacular time! You sure picked a good time to go.....its freaking freezing here now :cold:. Not sure what happened to that unseasonably warm weather, but we're paying for it now (and all this week, according to the weather man).

Aw, thank you! :goodvibes

We love the opportunity to show friends and family around our favourite city. I just wish we could convince a few more of our loved ones to join us for a week in the southern sun.....so far, most have balked at the idea. I know Steve's parents, in particular, would have a ball if they ever decided to give Orlando a try.

Yes, I'm sure there are loads of 'us' here. Several families we are friends with at home are here now. Some have been here a couple of days already and others are arriving today. One of my colleagues is here as well and our plans are nearly the same but off by one day.

I was texting with DH this morning and he said they got some snow and it's very cold/windy. I responded with the WDW weather forecast:stir:. I love March weather here. It's very warm hovering on HOT. We are spending the day here....

Sheesh, way to rub it in ;). Some of us still have another 7 weeks to wait, remember? It didn't seem like very long at all until you posted a picture of that sky.

We are keeping an interested eye out to see if Disney offers their Disney After Hours event on any day (most likely, the Thursday) of our upcoming spring week. Steve wants me to buy tickets if they extend it into early May. I'm not sure if I'm hoping they do or if I'm hoping they don't.....it sounds like a fun splurge but not a cheap one.

Make sure you're using lots of sunscreen!! That pasty white northern skin burns easily after a long winter.

PS.....please tell your DH to keep the snow. So far, we haven't received any of the white stuff here in SE Michigan, and I'm totally okay with that.

Thursday, October 20th :fish:

The kids were up bright and early, bubbling over with energy and begging to leave as soon as breakfast had been devoured. We met Joe and Lisa at their villa, and the guys all drove over in one vehicle while us girls drove over in the other: that way, Steve’s parking privileges under his annual pass covered the parking fee for our car while my AP provided complimentary parking for Lisa and Joe’s van. With our early start, we arrived about 15 minutes before park opening, and were happy to be among the first through the gates once again :cool1:.

14980752_10155162281566416_4717444992132875199_n.jpg

We had the annual Photokey, so we told Joe and Lisa to take full advantage of it over the duration of their trip. All they needed to do was collect photo cards from each photographer (if we didn’t happen to be with them at the time) and I’d have them added to our account :thumbsup2.

After their mini-session with one of the park photographers, we made a point of getting a group photo at the park entrance, though it wasn’t without its challenges : the kiddos were finding it difficult to adjust to the blinding sunshine of the morning, and none of them had remembered their sunglasses . While they swore they would die on the spot, it just made for a few grouchy moments until the attractions and exhibits made them forget all about their squinty eyes.

14915552_10155162281176416_3611161418802949514_n.jpg

I encouraged Steve, Joe and Lisa (all thrill seekers and coaster lovers) to head straight to Manta while I took the kids to see the stingray exhibit in Key West. There would be little to no line at that early hour, and the little ones were more than happy to chill with Aunt Gina while their mom and dad rode the ride.

14910303_10155162369261416_3313559938427054395_n.jpg

I purchased them a tray of food so that they could have the unique experience of feeding the rays, but they were surprisingly nervous to do so .

14925295_10155162369036416_7236450888748043704_n.jpg

I say surprisingly because these kids are no strangers to animals: they live on a small hobby farm and have multiple horses, several dogs, and an assortment of pets. Living the rural life, they are just as comfortable with a snake or a frog in their hands as they are riding a bicycle……so I didn’t figure that they’d have any inhibitions about feeding the rays. I think it was the odd way the rays suck the fish from your hands that they found unsettling: that, and the fact that those pesky rays were full of tom-foolery at that early hour, and seemed to take completely delight in soaking us all with a huge splash each time they swam by. Every time a large one approached, it was followed by a squeal of annoyance as one of the three inevitably stood with fishy water running down their face and shirt.

14910401_10155162369281416_5130884566584874028_n.jpg

It took us a while and a few failed attempts, but they managed to actually get a couple of those little fish in the bellies of two grateful rays. We washed little hands thoroughly afterward and made our way next toward the pelicans.

(I am afraid I returned the kiddos to their parents a bit wet :o ... check out the front of Alaina and Johan's shorts :rotfl:):

14910449_10155162369306416_1409722366546508204_n.jpg

The kids were pretty impressed by the pelican exhibit, and couldn’t believe the size of the birds. They oooohed and ahhhed and pointed and chattered away, making me promise that I would bring Joe and Lisa back to that part of the park at some point during the day so that they, too, could see the rays and visit the pelicans just like they had done.

14915492_10155162369536416_6978100021664782557_n.jpg

We wound our way over to the Manta exit where Steve, Joe and Lisa were waiting around the photo screens. We had timed it just perfectly, as they had just finished the ride and were having a good laugh at their picture. I had the photo put on our photo key and handed the soggy kids off to their mom as they chose the place they wanted to visit next.

14937177_10155162281876416_6111401679963479991_n.jpg

We all opted to do an attraction that the whole 7 of us could enjoy together, so Turtle Trek was the next logical stop. Not only was it something that would appeal to both the kids as well as the adults, but it was smart to check off another major attraction early in the day while the crowds were non-existent. It was also nice to get out of the blazing sun for a few moments: the kids were captivated by the huge aquariums featuring the manatees and turtles from the second we headed inside.

14908415_10155162369946416_1152992432598918783_n.jpg

The staff inside the queue was, as always, very knowledgeable and super patient with all the questions that the kids had about the sea creatures featured in each habitat. We only had a short wait before being ushered into the theater for the next showing of Turtle Trek, but it went by quickly for both the adults and the little ones.

Turtle Trek drew high marks from Joe, Lisa and all the kids: Alaina was a bit intimidated by the loudness (and held tight to my hand during the entire show), but otherwise it was a hit. The girls, especially, also loved the outdoor manatee exhibit as we exited the attraction, and we stopped for a few moments to admire the size and gentleness of these timid “sea cows”.

14962722_10155162370521416_2018264000547213279_n.jpg

We also paused for a “girls pic” with the manatee statue :):

14572430_10155162370746416_7465741908620390053_n.jpg

We continued our trek through the park, and headed to give the kids another ride experience: this time, on Journey to Atlantis. Little Alaina could not be convinced to give it a try, so she and Aunt Gina opted to visit the Jewels of the Sea Aquarium while the rest of our crew rode the ride. Atlantis had just opened for the morning so there was no wait to board.

14938144_10155162370841416_1496985059747159859_n.jpg

After a short exploration of the inside of the Aquarium, we managed to make it outside to the viewing area just in time to catch their boat splashing down and hear their screams of delight. Alaina was excited that they spotted us watching them and gave us a big wave, which she happily returned to them .

14925787_10155162370896416_4954884637070188840_n.jpg

We walked back through the gift shop and waited for them all to emerge from the ride exit. They were all excited to see their ride photo, especially Johan: he had been rather scared of the ride (and had begged to get off as soon as they boat was sent on its way) but now had bragging rights that he lived to tell the story. Photo proof of his bravery.....especially when his little sister wasn't willing to brave the boat.....was just what his little ego required :teeth:.

14963145_10155162281526416_285153748942109544_n.jpg

Since this was Lisa and Joe’s first visit, we left most of the choices of what to do next up to them (we had seen it all and done it all on previous visits, so whatever they chose would be just fine with us) and Lisa suggested we take in a show. They all were eager to see the killer whales in One Ocean, and she thought it would be smart for the little legs to have a rest and enjoy a snack and some rehydration while they enjoyed the production. Afterward, we could let them loose in Shamu’s Happy Harbor for some kid-sized amusements.

Next up: Shamu makes a splash, we all get in touch with our inner child, and Steve tests the size limits on Swishy Fishies :p.

What a great day so far :goodvibes we too enjoyed the manatees and turtle trek in December, we went 1 night and it was really quiet. The turtles are wonderful to watch.

Funny, I didnt even bring my camera this trip. Didn't even think about it. I've hardly even taken any pics with my phone. Snapped that pool pic just for you. We spent the day at the 50's pool as our room is in building 1. We found it a tad boring and Monday will go back to the 60's pool which is our usual hang out. The weather today was glorious (no other way to describe it) about 83 by noon. Hubs can definitely keep the snow.

I should own stock in a sunscreen company. I'm of British decent so I've got the transparent British milky skin. I don't really sit in the sun. Can't, even with sunscreen I burn.

Sounds like you guys had an awesome first day. Must be so fun for you guys to see Orlando through children's eyes again!

I especially love the one that is missing a leg (or maybe both?) from a shark attack. It's such a wonderful example of the good work that Seaworld does. That turtle is alive today because of their commitment to animal care.

We had actually never seen the parks through the eyes of little ones before. This was a first. Our own son was 13 when we first vacationed in Orlando, and well beyond hanging out in the kids areas. Having the nieces and nephew this trip gave us a small glimpse into what it will be like when we travel with grandkids someday. It was definitely a new experience!

What a pleasant surprise to be enjoying some nice quiet time on a cold Sunday afternoon and coming across your trip report. After reading the 16 pages, I am looking forward to more postings and especially the future Christmas report.
The picture that has Steve with his nieces.... I have the same Blue Florida Gators golf shirt...such a classy man.

We have been going to Frankenmuth to relax/shop the past 40 years . Did you know that the Bavarian lodge has a rewards program that costs $10 This gives you a free dinner on your birthday at the Bavariann restaurant and also some really decent room rate specials on certain dates. Zhenders also has a reward club that is free. It also gives you a free dinner on your birthday so that one both you and Steve could set up an account and get a free dinner on each of your birthdays. Is it a 80-90 minute drive.

We are doing a family Christmas vacation this year and it will be the first time visiting SeaWorld. We will have our two grandchildren with us and we are doing the "Dine with Shamu". Is there any other must see events during this time of the year? Anxiously awaiting more updates

Gina, just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy reading your trip reports! Like you, we really enjoy all Orlando has to offer and are not "strictly Disney" folks. I especially enjoyed your review of Capone's, and we are thinking about adding a visit to our June trip. I hope your relocation to the US is going well :) -Andrea

Good morning gang! Currently GC is still out like a light. Our neighbours exited with a bang this morning and woke her up temporarily. I thought perhaps the offer of Mickey waffles would get her moving but no. There was a pretty wicked storm here last night. It lightly rained from about 3pm onward while we attempted to be at DHS. Note I say attempted. The park was packed to the rafters. We were only able to ride our 3 FP+ rides and then wandered around a little. The rain came down a fair bit harder around 6:30 so we went back to our room. By 9:00 the thunder and lightning was in full force. It would have woken the dead. Speaking of waking the dead even the leaf blower outside our room is not waking GC.

I've been texting with the family at home and there is a full on blizzard coming in there today. Do I feel bad about missing it.....not so much. I do however have an issue getting home tomorrow. I'm flying to Buffalo and they look like they are getting the storm tomorrow.

Oh! Even more fun! So great that Jake is as into Orlando as you guys are - should make for super fun memories for you guys as grandparents down the line.

You are going to LOVE Seaworld during the holiday season!! In our humble opinion, Seaworld does Christmas better than any other park.....for us, it even beats MVMCP at MK.

I absolutely recommend Santa's Fireside Feast (a traditional Christmas dinner buffet with Santa, Mrs. Claus and the elves) and the reserved seating package for the Christmas shows. Oh Wondrous Night is NOT TO BE MISSED. This past year, they had Rudolph's Christmas Village with the opportunity to meet Rudolph, Clarice, the Bumble and Yukon Cornelious, and it was a blast. Some great photo opportunities throughout the park so I highly recommend Photokey for this time of year too.

Yep....you're just gonna have to deal with it. Go pet the kitties and breath deeply.

Okay. You twisted my rubber arm  :cat:.

Thank you Andrea :goodvibes. :welcome: to the thread!

I do hope you decide to give Capone's a try......be sure to ask to be seated in either Vito or Snap's section (you can add those types of special requests at the time you order tickets). Splurge and get the VIP upgrade, too....its SO worth it ::yes::.

Ugh, those Florida storms.....they give me the heebie jeebies :scared:. I'm a hide-under-the-bed kinda girl when thunderstorms break out, though. My Violet is the same.....we are kindred spirits in that regard. We had a big thunderstorm here a week or so ago, and she fled to the top of my kitchen cabinets and flattened herself on top until the worst of the activity had passed.

I was watching Good Morning America this morning, and the weather sure looks dicey for your return home :(. I'd be making a back-up plan if I were you. Hopefully the storm tracks more south and misses western New York State.....safe travels back to Canada, whenever you manage to get on your way. Hopefully @bankr63 leaves late enough that he misses the worst of the weather, too.

Oh! Even more fun! So great that Jake is as into Orlando as you guys are - should make for super fun memories for you guys as grandparents down the line.

Way down the line, hopefully :teeth:. 10 years would be good ;).

My apologies, everyone, for the lack of updates since Saturday. I've just been tied up with one thing or another for the last two days. I will try and get another entry up by tonight, if it all possible. Thanks for your patience!

And for those in the storm areas today, stay in and stay safe from Stella. She passed through SE Michigan yesterday but thankfully we only got about 4 inches total. I'm hearing 2 feet is possible for some parts of the northern US :crazy2:. Didn't Mother Nature get the memo that we were all ready for spring?
