"Double Dip Delight" Alternate Western 09/27/08

Thanks Brandie--yep did the steamy bathroom thing a number of times last night. It did help a little (and every little bit helped). Kids should be in bed but the schedules are so far off after last night that I am letting them finish Labrynth (it's almost over).

Logo--how about removing the tag line from the bottome all together (your great line Erik) and putting THAT on the scroll? So we still get the Castaway Cay concept without listing ports we may or may not be going to. Just a random thought.

I agree with majority so far

• the DEEP RED background
• Love the double scoop cones
• Like the idea of treasure box... but agree that one doesnt seem to fit (see below LOL)
• I like the idea of the map having the ports on it (not sure what to do if it changes though)
• maybe it would be good to have 2, one for the shirts with the port names (if we do that LOL) and 1 without them or on the scroll for the lanyards if it isnt visable on the map once scrunk to lanyard size

so Since you are working so hard at getting this together for us I thought I would try and search for alternative chest so you dont have to do that..

not sure if i like these either but all the others were too cartoonish like.

So if they change our itinerary in May and all our shirts and other souvenirs are already printed up, then we're up a creek. The lanyards, however, we have a larger window of opportunity for.....if we have to change it, I can do that, really up until several weeks before we sail since I will be making the nametags myself here at home.

I've been looking for other chests, too...since people do seem to like the chest idea best if it doestn' come off as so cartoonish. I'll waste some more work time tomorrow playing with it

If you haven't yet checked out Post 577 (link in my signature), that has a pretty good summary of things people are interested in doing as a group that have already been discussed. OF COURSE share if you have more ideas!!! If you are unfamiliar with one of the items listed, where I could, I embedded other post links in Post 577 that talk about the subject. For example, Costa Maya (we hope) school supply mission or fish extender fun.

I'm sure others may have some suggestions to get you up to speed quickly as well! I'm so thrilled you're jumping right in with us!

WOW! This has been a busy board the past few days! I had a hard time catching up. Erik, thanks for all of your hard work! As one of the original thread whatevers on this board, I would like to put in my 2 cents (however, I am not a control freak, just ask my DH )

Color: Love the dark red - makes the map pop
Logo: Love the old map idea, love the ice cream, although I vote for 2 scoops on the ice cream cones - I believe the ice cream was part of an early conversation - Of course I think there is never too much chocolate or ice cream!
Chest: I like the second chest above, or something like that with coins - looks old to match the ship.
Ports: I like having the ports there with the route mapped - I have to ask: What about Costa Maya - I missed something? Was it hit by the hurricane?

- I also like having the names of the ports on the map.

On another note: I did some shopping for the cruise already - is that obsessive or what? I found clearance swimsuits for all of the babies , as well as DH and I - and some other Summer outfits and sandals for the kiddies.

I am going to use the excuse of Christmas shopping - the parents are having a great time discussing the cruise, so they will enjoy the babies getting these things.

There are alot of Summer clearance items right now, if anyone wants to look!

We have decided to stay at the Hyatt in the airport coming and going -stay 2 nights when we get into Orlando, rent a van, and spend a day at AK. My youngest DS and his wife haven't been there, and we thought the kids would love the animals. Shouldn't be too hot in October!

Fair enough......I went with the ice cream thing because for as long as we've been having discussions about a logo, people have been suggesting an ice cream theme (I think going on the notion that "double dip" is ice cream shop jargon for two scoops of ice cream.....of course it could also mean someone who takes a bite off a chip and then sticks it back in the dip bowl...does anyone remember that Seinfeld episode? )

I knew that it meant double dip ice cream cone, but now I can't get the Seinfeld episode out of my head. (THANKS A LOT ) By the way, I LOVE ice cream, it's not that I am opposed to eating large quantities of ice cream while cruising, but doesn't Disney have soft serve anyway so there would be no 2 scoop cones. I guess until people started talking about having an ice cream cone theme, I always thought of the Double Dip Delight as getting to "dip" my toes twice in the tropical island water of Castaway Cay.
As you so perfectly put; "Because there is no such thing as too much Castaway Cay"

My other question/reservation is about putting the ports on the logo itself...since it's not completely clear if we'll be able to go to Costa Maya. Do people have thoughts about that?

Oh good thought about not putting the actual ports on because I was going to vote for the scroll with the ports on them, now I am not sure. But I do love what Hadley wrote about keeping the scroll but adding the part that you have at the bottom inside the scroll. Then maybe peoples names could be at the bottom in the same font that you already have.

Also, if we do end up having a treasure chest and the port names are positioned on the map, you may want to change the pathway arrrows on the map to point towards the Treasure Chest instead of away from it. Because who would want to be sailing away from the "booty"

Good morning all. And it IS a good morning here. Rio slept all through the nigth and his breathing kept getting easier as the night progressed (yep, his anxious mom was checking all the darn time). So, I am feeling much better (mentally) and I assume Rio is too (still sleeping that one).

MagicFor2--All your shopping sounds fun. I don't know how you missed hearing about the category 5 hurricane which pretty much desimated Costa Maya. It was pretty major news even for those not planning a cruise there. Anyway the rebuilding of a pier/dock AT ALL (even to tender into) is projected to take a bit over a year. So, if everything goes well and they are right on time we should get to go, but how often do construction projects complete on time? Thus the worry about listing port names. It is likely DCL will hold off on announcing any changes until VERY close to the sail date so as to give Costa Maya every possible chance to rebuild in time.

Treasure Chests--I think I like the one in the top of the list on anewmac's post best. Several are good though. Or we can keep the scroll (I do like hte scroll).

Ice Cream Cones--I really like the ice cream cones as a symbol to represent the idea of a Double Dip. Yes, Double Dip does refer to going to Castaway Cay twice, but that is kinda hard to have an easy visual symbol for. Many people (I would have said most had I not read the pst few pages of posts!) do think of a double scoop of ice cream when they hear the term Double Dip and at least it is something sweet and good (like C.C.). I don't think the intention is to give the impression that the cruise is about ice cream, or that hard, "scoopable" ice cream is available on the ship. When we took the Double Dip a year ago, there was DCL mechandice which called it a "double dip" and at least one shirt had a double scoop ice cream on it (but no fancy maps, scrolls, etc).

at myself... I've been puzzled since last night as to why DH was so lukewarm about the ice cream cones... It's because he can't eat ice cream! DUH!

Hadley, I am glad Rio is feeling much better. I know what you mean about checking on your baby throughout the night. I let DH put her to bed, and then after she is asleep, I have to go in every night and check on her before I can sleep. Smoochie to the head and then off to bed for me.

I hope Rio continues to improve rapidly and the asthma is a passing thing brought on by the severe coughing spell you mentioned. Hey, one can hope!

On another subject... I got an extended life (10 hours) battery for my HP laptop, and I think I can officially state that my laptop is the heaviest in the world. This battery is so big it raises the keyboard a good inch and a half. DH tried to sell it to me last night as a good way to add ventilation access. :eyeroll:

Hey folks!

Well I"m at work now and catching up on all the posts.....I have been keeping notes on all the comments and ideas and I have been saving all the chests people sent me either in PM's or via email or posted here in the thread. I have another big training to lead today, as well, but I'll be done at 2pm so after that I will try to sit down and bang out a few new versions of the logo for people to look at and we'll see what people think.

I think we're getting a lot of great feedback and we should have a final by the weekend, I think. Some decisions are, I think already pretty much made at this point. There's been enough consensus from a number of people, I think, for me to figure that we do have some things set in stone:

.....like I think the mickeyhead map is a done deal

....the darker red background is a done deal

....and even though not everyone gets it completely, I think the double scoops of ice cream are a done deal, too....because enough people have voted in favor of those icons...and they are a part of this thread's history..and, as Hadley pointed out, it would be difficult to think of something small and iconic that also captures the idea of the phrase "Double Dip"


So our primary issues revolve around the scroll vs chest debate, what that should look like, and perhaps discussion about port names being included. I'll try to put together a bunch of mock-ups and post them later this evening and people can review them.

As far as an alternative port, Grand Caymen would be where they would go on a typical Western. I think that may be a good chance of a replacement port. Howver, I would really like to do something different. Any one have any ideas on where else we can hope to visit that is in the range of the western?
