Hello All! I have been lurking for 2 days now trying to read all the posts on this thread. I booked this cruise last week.....

Our family is: DW (me)
DH (who will be turning the big 40 on October 4!)
DS - 8
DD - 5
We will be in SPH - 5524

Your hubby and I share a birthday!!! He's just got 2 years on me! :) It will be a sad birthday for us both....we'll be leaving the ship. :sad1:

Hi all

Boy this is a busy place. These TransAtlantic people have brought new life to the boards, not that we needed new life by any means. :goodvibes

I haven't decided about the fish extender thing yet. BUT, I keep seeing pictures of them though and keep thinking they look just like the bags I use to keep all my toiletries in when I travel. SOOO, I was at Walmart today, I looked in the make-up section and there was a folding bag that had about 4 zippered pockets with a hanger on the top. It looked just like all the pictures I see of the fish extenders and it was about $12.00. Now I'm not sure if these things have to be handmade of if a store-bought one would be uncouth. But for all those that aren't crafty, like myself, I would think they would work just fine. Just a thought.

One more thing, my daughter's 5th birthday was last Saturday & we went to Legoland to celebrate. We went on this one rollercoaster-ish ride & it had an automatic picture taken. I don't normally buy these pictures BUT the look on my daughter's face is priceless. I promise you she had fun and is not tramatized. Call me a horrible Mom, but when I see this picture I bust out laughing.

It's a sad day for a Birthday, but a great excuse for a Party - How about in 6080? I hear there will already be a croud there! What's a few more with noisemakers.

I'm about 4 weeks older than DH, so I will have already turned the big "40" and whatever happens to him - He can't pay me back! :thumbsup2

What's that evil laugh - MUHAHAHAHA

Catecrew--Love the photo! Is that their "Test Track"? We really enjoy Legoland, but living on the wrong coast we haven't been there since Easter Sunday 2004, so things are a bit cloudy in my mind. Please tell your little one Happy Birthday from us:bday:

You absolutely could use something like that for a fish extender. Several people on our recent cruise didn't feel they were crafty enough to make something from scratch so they bought those hanging toiletry organizers or even a hanging shoe organizer (usually had to cut it so that it was only one vertical row of pockets so it wouldn't be too wide). You can then get as crafty as you like with that as your base. People used all sorts of fun stuff like pins and buttons and stickers and patches and ribbons.....or even paints....to personalize and "disney-fy" them. They all turned out great!!

The other option is to buy one. Periodically they will pop up on ebay if you do a search for "disney hanging pocket" or "disney hanging organizer" They seem to sell on there for under $10 usually depending on what you're looking for. So that is definitely another option for the "non-crafty" members who want to jump into the fish extender fun!!

Catecrew--all the original fish extenders (idea was created by Debbie from our last cruise on her PC repo) were store bought:)

Erik do you know what is the maximum width on them?

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:
Did someone put you up to asking me that question?

No, seriously, I'm sure nobody did put you up to it...but it's an ironic question to ask me because I actually DO know the maximum width!!

The size of my own fish extender was the source of much discussion and drama on the repo cruise! :) As is generally the case wiht me....when I set out to make our fish extender I went WAY overboard and decided I wasnt' happy with hanging pockets but I also needed it to be a message center with a bulletin board and a wipe board that all hung as a single unit. Ambitious. Crazy. BIG. What ended up happening was I saw pictures of the original fish extenders and saw there was wiggle room on both sides so assumed I could make mine a little wider to accomodate my lofty plans...then once it was done I panicked and thought "Oh heavens this is NEVER gonna fit!!" So the drama for months leading into the cruise was whether my giant fish extender would ever actually be hung from my fish or if I'd have to keep it packed in my suitcase because it was too big. In the end..............

As you can see it is just a LITTLE too wide, but manageable----and it was a big hit so we're pleased with it and it will be coming on the Double Dip with us!

So what are the correct dimensions? Most the traditional fish extenders are about 7 inches wide. Mine is approximately 13 inches wide. I would advise that people try to keep their fish extenders under the 11 inch mark so they're sure it hangs well....but DEFINITELY no wider than mine at 13 inches or else it won't hang correclty and it will obstruct the hallway.

I'm going to drag this on for ya, Erik! The unknown that I've had is related to the "hanger". I want mine to clear the stateroom number as yours does. Would you be ever so kind to pull it out and measure the tip of the "V" (where it would hang from the fish) to the dowel rod for me? Pretty please with sugar on top!!!

Now THAT is an excellent question!! I actually couldn't estimate that when I made ours so I actually put a string in it that was SUPER long and we didn't tie the knots off and cut it till we got there. When i get home tonight I'll measure from the center point of the "V" when hanging to the top of the rod/fabric. Luckily I don't have to dig it out because it's still hanging in our spare bedroom. I can't yet bear to put it away!

That was preciously my plan...thread it through the dowel and worry about it later. Yet since we have you :) , I'll take advantage of that! I'm planning to make several, so if I can not have waste, that would be awesome!

Merci, mon ami!!

I made mine out of an old pair of jeans, so the width of a pant leg, child size 10-12, worked well. There were some cute ones just made from gift bags. The treasure chest was my favorite, though, I must say. When my kids(5 and 2) were looking for our room, they'd always look for the "pants," so your extender works as a great room locater, too.

ZOMG...

i can see that i'm going to have to bribe Erica to um get crafty and make my fish extender for me. i havne't got a crafty bone in my body and i happen to KNOW that she's a crafthead...i've SEEN her scrapbooks.

I'm game for joining in on the lanyard fun and i'm hoping i can get my act together to join in the fish extender fun....if not i'm hanging a giant canadian flag on my door just 'cause i can. :)

Hello All! I have been lurking for 2 days now trying to read all the posts on this thread. I booked this cruise last week - At least I think it was last week. It might have been the week before actually. . .

Anyhow - I'm so glad to have found this site! My DH gives me the glazed over look and the "Dear this cruise is next year already. Calm down!" comment every time I bring it up. (I only talk about it 6 to 60 times a day - go figure:confused3 ).

I can now get my fix and not bother him to much. :woohoo:

Our family is: DW (me)

DD - 5
We will be in SPH - 5524

Welcome to the thread!

We are SOOOOO taking over the boat. :thumbsup2

Stargater--you just became the 5th official person (well poster, many of us post for 2) on my list:woohoo: The lanyard team is building stron already! Hey Erik, we may get to cut it off pretty quickly, how cool would that be?

I'll join the lanyard team! :goodvibes

My DH, Jason, is software engineer, too....and he's not used to having to put on clothes that are even remotely presentable (although I force him to when he goes to work....but he's the only one in his office who does!). He hates dressing up, too, but on the ship we are always well dressed and have a different Disney tie for dinner EVERY NIGHT! :thumbsup2

I have to dress my teacher husband too! :rotfl:

"A" Disney tie? MUWAHAHAHAHAHA :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Oh my dear......we were on a 14 night cruise...and Jason and I both wore a Disney tie to dinner every night (except for Tropical night and Pirate night)....and the same tie never appeared twice (with the exception of the one night when we wore the matching Tinkerbell ties that I made myself so we'd have a matching pair). So we actually wore TWENTY-FOUR Disney ties...and had 3 others with us that didn't "make the cut" :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: (And only 4 of them were Mickey ties....we found ties with all kinds of films and characters represented).

I had set out with the plan that wearing disney ties to dinner every night would be a fun and festive way to both dress up and to celebrate our favorite way to vacation....WITH DISNEY!!! :goodvibes :goodvibes And the fun thing is that when I actually BOOKED that cruise...we owned one mickey tie and one tigger tie...so i spent the better part of a year hunting down ties...and even MAKING some ties. It was fabulous!! You'll have to ask some of my fellow TransAtlantic cruisers but I like to think Jason and I's ties were a highlight of our dinner table each evening! :lmao: :lmao:

....but never fear....Jason and I have decided that we have officially started a tradition for ourselves and the Disney tie collection will be taking every cruise we do...so some of those ties will be appearing for an encore performance during the Double Dip...and we've already starting looking out for other new ties we can bring, too.....we wouldn't want our "old" DIS friends to get bored with our dinner wardrobe, now!!! :rotfl:

DH has a few Disney ties from when he was a cast member. Back in my dark period (before I was a mouse addict) I almost threw them away. I'm so glad I didn't! How could I live with myself? I'll have to make sure we pack them. We should have DIS Disney tie night! Of course, for Erik that will be EVERY night ;)

You crazy Canuk.

OK I'm home now and have measured. I'd recommend that the distance between the point of the "v" when hung and the dowel be approximately 6 inches (that's about what mine is) or more if you want it not obstruct your room number.

So, Hadley, that looks liek two more chipper members of the lanyard cheer squad!! :cheer2: :cheer2:

DIS Disney tie night? I think that is a FABULOUS idea!! It'd even be silly fun (if we did it on a non-dressy night...so not formal or semiformal night) if the women all wore button down shirts and a disney tie (with a skirt or slacks)!! We could plan a big group picture between dining seatings, too! On the repo we did two big DIS dress up and photo ops. We all wore our pirate gear and took a group photo for pirate night and we all wore our pajamas to breakfast at Lumiere's one morning and took a group shot in the atrium that day, too!! But a DIS Disney tie night could be a new tradition we create on the Double Dip thread!

I would totally wear a tie for a pic.

So, looking into fish extenders......do you think this would be too much? :rotfl:

I'm looking in my Martha Stewart back issues right now (yes, I know I am sad :rotfl: ) and I found the famed hanging organizer pattern.....but it's about twice as big as I remember it being. But, it does actually look pretty simple. I might have to start shopping fabrics ;)
