Dorian

I think we’re in that 140-150 zone.
Haley, Im in South FLorida. Ive been through too many hurricanes, including Andrew. Your home is new and built to standards. We dont have frame houses here, its concrete block. Your shutters will protect you. Those are good points. remember those 140 mile winds are if the eye goes through you. The storm is not massive and hurricane force winds only go 30 miles out. Not all those winds are 140mph.

That said, no one can decide if you are comfortable staying. Your first hurricane can be scary. If it were ME, I would stay, but its completely up to you . Go with what makes you feel better. After the storm , if it hits you, won't be fun. Power outages, gas lines, heat, humidity, bugs... but thats going to happen regardless of where you are. Ive been known to want to leave not for safety, but to avoid the first few days of the aftermath.

If going to Disney makes you feel better, and you can cover the cost, go for it. But no one can decide that for you. Either way , from a fellow Floridian, stay safe and stay where you are most calm.

Thank you for your advice. I really appreciate it. Right now we are leaning towards staying. Dh is still scheduled to work Tuesday although I could see them changing that when it gets closer. If we do decide to go to Disney I would want to go early tomorrow morning. It’s just too early to go today imo

We were in line for Florence so most of the things we had as supplies we still have or have been replaced as needed. Right now all we need to do is fill gas cans and make some more ice.

20 years in FL and we have never left to flee a storm. The storm two years ago they predicted to devastate a lot of FL, we stayed while many of our neighbors fled...and sat in traffic for hours on end or paid $$$ for far off hotels for nothing. I think the worst was losing power for 10 hours.
I always feel safer here, especially when we have so many pets to care for. We had a lot of damage with Wilma in 2005 and almost as scary as the storm was the flood of out of town repair fraudsters invading our area. The roofers were the worst. Had several companies telling us our roof completely needed to be redone ($30kish) when after a couple of months we found an honest one who actually lives in our county who just replaced a dozen tiles.

We had the same type of scenario for years...had lived here 27 years, my parents 52 years, grandparents 80+ years, spent $$$ on hurricane preparations & evacs through the years for mostly nothing, sat in 11 hours of traffic just the yr before to evac for a storm that ended up going to Fl, etc...and the Katrina came.

Sometimes they get it right. It makes it difficult when it seems like crying wolf. But the reality is, there is always the potential for devastation, hence the dire warnings. Just b/c we get lucky sometimes doesn’t mean that’s evidence that it couldn’t happen. The 1000 ppl who died here in Katrina found that out the hard way unfortunately.

ETA: My house did not flood for Katrina, but I would never take a chance on a Katrina type storm here b/c next time, if it hits just right, it could be us.

I don't fault people for wanting to flee, better to be safe then sorry. I wanted to flee for Irma as that was my first hurricane and we lost power for a whole week. Really regret that decision!

Yup, in my opinion its always better to be overprepared than underprepared.

I'm astounded at some people in some of my local groups that are outright mad at the "fake media" for lying about the storm. I do realize that certain national outlets can hype things. But I've found our local news to always be very calm, and also very clear about the uncertainty of looking at the cone predications 5-6 days out. I'd rather have more information to make my decisions than less.

Yeah I've noticed that too. I'm not sure how you can lie about a hurricane :confused3

We still haven’t left but I’m getting so nervous now. Everyone around us is staying and I’m just not sure if that’s a smart thing or not. Dh doesn’t want to leave. We’ve already started to get gusts of wind and random heavy rain out of nowhere. Might be more dangerous to leave and get blown off the road

How do you guys think we’ll be here in Melbourne to the west of I-95?

How many miles inland are you?
