Dorian

From the Indian river about 10 miles... we are getting our bag ready now and might be driving to Orlando. DH still doesn’t want to leave

We are about 10 miles inland on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Our home, built much like yours, did fine in Katrina (a 150 mile storm, too). We lost a tree, some shingles. But overall did ok.

Tornadoes did go through our neighborhood and some homes had damages from that.

We did not stay because we had 4 small kids and did not want the weather to scare them.

Our utilities are underground. We lost power for 3 days, but got power back quickly because the elementary school across the street (on our same lines) became a headquarters for emergency personnel.

Had we to do it again today, we probably would stay as our kids are young adults now and dh are hurricane veterans, having lived here all our lives.

If you stay, fill up every container you can with water, including bathtubs, for washing off, dishes, flushing toilets, drinking, etc.

Our city water supply was not safe for use for over 2 weeks.

NEVER watch the Weather Channel if you are in the path of a hurricane. That channel has the mission of presenting weather stories as entertainment. It is NOT A NEWS CHANNEL!

Actual local news channels will give you real news, not hype. Also, no matter where the storm is tracking, WWL Radio and the Times-Picayune (nola.com) out of New Orleans can be counted on to provide experienced, reasoned, and thorough news coverage of any named storm.

The definitive voice is that of NOAA's National Hurricane Center. Always check with their information before making decisions about movement into or out of a storm-track area. The NHC Facebook page is especially helpful, actually. "NOAA NWS National Hurricane Center"

We booked a room at wdw and are leaving town now. Just topping off on gas. Everyone here is out and about acting like it’s no big deal

We have mandatory evacuation tomorrow at 8 am. St. Johns County Zone A and B. Let the road craziness begin!

I'm kind of surprised at how little evacuations/warnings have been given. I mean the track - or the line in the middle of the cone - is only about 30 miles offshore, seems like that would be close enough to the "better safe than sorry" level for the governments, but they probably know a lot more about it then I do. Just seems like they're not quite being cautious enough to me.

I think it's a timing thing.

Katrina suddenly ballooned over Saturday night and on Sunday after noon evacuation orders started.

It hit late Sunday into Monday morning.

I remember watching forecasts Saturday thinking this does not look good. But it was the weekend and the main meteorologists on tv were off and not paying attention to maps, etc. I was concerned then, but they did not start sounding alarms until Sunday.

Gridlock on all roads getting out of town was nuts.

Who is responsible for the hurricane watch/warnings? That's the NHC right? I feel like they want us to believe that anything within the cone is possible, then they need to put up warnings for the cone. It's like they don't believe what they're telling us and they are banking on it following the exact tiny center track.

Bob Breck was telling people to leave Saturday. That’s when we decided we should go. Gas lines were insane and people were getting out Saturday afternoon. We left very early Sunday morning and heard the mandatory evacuation order on the radio when we got to BR.

Weather.com has good info, too.

Yes! I was following Bob Breck (still do) on WVUE and his VIPIR models. He was the first to sound the alarm.

WLOX'S Mike Reader was out of town and the weekend fill ins were no help.

Sunday morning I awoke at 6:15. Tommy Richard's on WLOX announced Katrina at a Cat 5 and 155 mph winds. It was that announcement that got us packing the car to leave.

Based on Bob's reports on Saturday, we finalized our preparations Saturday afternoon and night.

By the time Mississippi was alerted, folks from Louisiana were already bumper to bumper on I 10 and inland Mississippi Roads evacuating.
