Door Decorations

Do most people print and then laminate door decorations and use a magnetic strip to attach to the door, or do you use the magnetic sheets. I seem to remember that when we went on a cruise last time, the magnetic sheets kept sliding

We just got back and this is the first time we ever had an issue with the magnetic sheets not sticking. I don't know if the doors have just been repainted so many times they have lost the power to stick or what. They stuck perfectly to the inside of the door though. Next time I will laminate and use the magnetic strips.
We were on The Magic.

Have fun.

I typically use the magnetic sheets. The only time I had a problem with them was on our Wonder Hawaii cruise, and then it was the smaller magnets that didn't have as much surface area to adhere to the door.

I agree it may have had to do with the copious amount of paint on the doors at the time. I'm thinking there may not be as much paint now, since her dry dock.

I've used magnetic sheets for the past few years and had no problem with them sticking on the doors on the Fantasy and Magic. We're on the Dream later this week, so fingers crossed for continued success!

I have never used the sheets. I have used the magnetic tape in the past with no problems. I also save up whatever magnets I get with junk mail. I get magnetized calenders every year from a local law firm etc.

I print and laminate our pictures for our door. One tip, do not use the lightest laminate as it tends to want to curl and pull away from the door. I used the standard the other time and it worked well.

I purchased a roll of magnetic tape that comes from a teaching supply store and looks like a roll of tape. It worked well for our Fantasy cruise but wasn't strong enough for the Wonder. If you're sailing on one of the older ships I would recommend stronger magnets just to be sure.

I found the glue on those rolls of magnetic tape to be less sticky than my project seems to need. It doesn't want to stick. Does anyone else have that problem?

Also, for the PP who uses the small magnets from Michael's, did you glue them (hot glue?). And did they leave any scratches on the metal surface that you noticed?

Yes hot glue/glue gun. I got the idea from Martha Stewart. She did a demonstration of how to make magnets and specifically recommended those. They are great. They are not entirely flat like the magnetic sheets but they are strong and your magnets will not move.

We use the laminate then add magnets (but not the kind in a roll). Images don't seem as vibrant if you just print on the magnet.

I'm curious as to what type of decorations you put on your door? We're going on our first cruise in March and I'd love to do something fun!

I found with the magnetic sheets that they tend to have enough weight themselves that is why they tend to move or slide. I don't necessarily think that they repaint the doors to all the staterooms that much to build up a that many layers of paint, nor do I suspect that during the Wonder's dry dock stripping every single stateroom door was a priority at that time. I would not count on them being any different paint thickness wise than before the dry dock. I do suspect that the strength of the magnetic "sheet" is dependent on the manufacturer adhering enough of the mineral that gives it it's magnetic quality to make it hold to a metal surface. I've found that many of the magnetic sheet's that are sold online often have significant complaints about their adhesion ability to things like appliances or other metal surfaces. That coupled with the cost of the magnetic sheets in the first place, and the potential if you have a issue printing a sheet and it doesn't come out like you want it to, it's just wasting one for the purpose, has steered me to printing the door decorations out on heavy card stock and laminating them. Then attaching self adhesive magnetic squares to the back my method for stateroom door decorations.

I never thought about the weight of the magnet. Good point.

What brand of magnet squares do you use?

I've printed something quite large and I'm struggling to figure out how to hang it. The adhesive magnets I've found aren't sticking very well, so it may be glue gun for me. Also, I want to figure out how few magnets I need to still have it say in place on the door.

BTW - glue guns are prohibited items, right? Don't bring one for on-the-fly crafting fixes?

I used Cardstock and self laminating sheets, once laminated I cut them out and applied self adhesive magnets generously and had no problem with them sticking to the door on the Magic.
