Don't ya just love backhanded compliments?

How about this? My husband said to me the other day, "I've never heard such a feminine sound coming from your shoes before!"

Meaning...I usually wear clumpy chunky heeled shoes, and I was wearing a boots with thinner heels that made a totally different sound on the floor than he was used to I guess!

Totally O/T but this reminded me of the time when Dh and I were dating. I was dressed up to apply for a job and stopped at his place after I was finished. He said the sound of my high heels clicking on the walkway drove him wild. What is it with men and the sound of clicking heels??

From the MIL - You have such a cute house...for something so small

From others my whole life - you're so cute...you look like you're 12

Teaching is a noble profession...have you ever wanted to do anything more ambitious than that?

From one of our student employees on my birthday--I had no idea you were THAT old.

Umm...thanks. :teeth: Hopefully, someone bought me a gift certificate to the nursing home.

From my MIL while looking over some of my purchases when I returned from shopping................

MIL: "I like that sweater you bought. Now you can give the one you're wearing to the bad people."

Me: "Huh? Who are the 'bad people'?

MIL: "You know, the homeless or the really poor people. They will use anything and don't care how they look or how they live."

Me: "So, the sweater I'm wearing right now should go to people who live bad lives and don't care how bad they look."

MIL: "Yes, dear. I don't understand why this is upsetting you. After all, it is for charity."

My dd called me last Dec and said she was Christmas shopping with her MIL....DD picked up a cute little (jr size3) held it up and said this would look cute on my little sis, her MIL says , yes.....cute vivacious girls like your sis always look great....DD says, well when I was in High school I wore this size too...MIL says, yes dear but then you discovered cheeseburgers.....DD was livid and so hurt....she had just had a baby 5 weeks earlier and was not feeling great about her figure at that moment....What would make people say some of these things..????? :confused3 ..They must be missing that sensitivity gene.

One of my favorites:

Your daughter is beautiful. She looks nothing like you.

Gee thanks LOL

I don't take it personal. She just happens to be my husbands twin. He could never deny paternity :rotfl:

Thats another comment I got at work...man they are batting 1000!

Middle DD came in for an interview, she was in the inner office and a bunch of us were standing around in the outer ofice and we were talking rather loudly. One of them said, "we need to be quiet, Deb has an interview." So I said.."oh it's just my daughter, we don't have to be quiet" Respnse from person #3 was "OMG where did she come from, she looks nothing like you" Now my DD is tall, skinny, dark hair, dark eyes and cute....I am short, fat, lighter hair and eyes...and she looks nothing like me! So yeah I felt insulted just a bit.

And one by my at hat time future BIL. At my wedding he kept repeating over and over "I can't believe how good you look today." I couldn't understand it until DH reminded me that the only time he really saw me was after we had bveen working on our house all day and went to MIL's house to eat. Of course I was a mess then, no makeup, hair in ponytails, paint and dirt all over me....did he really think that was my "normal" look?

My DD has blue eyes (not common in my area), which I guess skipped a few generations and must have come directly from my grandfather since most our family has darker hair, hazel or brown eyes...well, my DH is part oriental and so it is even less common on his side. It is so wonderful when people compliment DD's eyes and tell my DH, "Her blue eyes are so beautiful, are you sure she is yours?" :faint: If I am around to hear it I usually tell people, "Yep, she's from him. Between my two kids and DH I don't have time or energy for someone on the side."

"You're so slim and trim... Have you been to a doctor lately to make sure there's nothing wrong?"

I've been "slim and trim" ALL my life, so whatever the problem is, I'm pretty sure it's "chronic"... :rotfl: :rotfl:

Or......."you're hair looks good today"......usually it looks awful, I guess.

From my ex-MIL to me about my being a SAHM: "your sister in law could never stay home with children. She is so smart, she would go crazy with boredom. And what do you DO all day?"

And from the guy I dated after my divorce, on my 40th birthday, "this is the most depressing day of my life. Now I can't say I have a girlfriend who is in her 30's" to which I replied, "if I don't care that you are 6 years older than I, why does it bother you that I have turned 40?" :rotfl: (He's an ex now, and alone)

I ran into the younger brother of an ex-boyfriend who exclaimed,

"you look so young, did you have some work done?"

I'm only 30!

Oh man, I wish I had a chronic case of that!;) :rotfl:

"you are so easy to shop for.....because you're so low maintenance"

Ugh! I get that one all the time! It's so annoying.
Same here...my favourite is when people who don't know me tell me 'you're gonna break some hearts when you grow up'....I'm 21!!

I also get 'don't get me wrong, you're pretty, but your sisters are stunning!' I get that all the time.....its such fun being the ugly sister.

And if we're having family photos taken my sisters always ask if they can have a photo just the two of them, without me, because they're so photogenic that they know it'll be a good picture! I've learnt not to get insulted anymore!

Another regular is, when people ask how much I weigh, when I tell them they say 'really? you look like you weigh a lot more than that!' that happens a lot! :confused3

What is it with people??
For years I foiled my hair and finally got tired of it and had it colored a medium brown (slightly darker than my natural color) When my Mom and stepfather saw me they said "oh you colored your hair! I really like you as a blond"
Uhmmmm, thanks. I think.
