Selling tickets for one direction concert, buyer agreed to buy and sent $200, promising the rest later in the day. Expecting rest of money to come, we bought more expensive tickets. Well, buyer said they couldn't come up with rest of money. I had to find someone to buy tickets quickly for much less (concert this week). Sent back $180, since I took a loss of $200 since she backed out.

She filed a claim, even though I already sent $185 to her. They put a hold on the funds she sent after I already sent her money.

This morning I sent another $20 back and messaged through paypal resolution center that she should now remove the dispute.

Nothing yet, sent an email to paypal about it.

Hate paypal. Any ideas?

Call them.
I am confused thought, she sent you $200 and you sent back $180 or $185? Why didn't you send back the entire amount?

Unless you had an agreement there would be a return fee then you can't just return whatever money you feel like and take a cut of it yourself. I am not sure why you would agree to sell tickets and only get half of the money for them.

Why would you refund only $185 if she paid $200? If you send a refund, your fees are refunded also, so you would not have been out any money on the transaction. Your choices at that point would have been to sell her the tickets for $200 and call it good (I don't know what you were eventually able to sell them for) or refund the entire amount and there wouldn't have been any holds on your funds or account. This isn't Paypal's fault.

The first problem was taking a partial payment, it should be all or nothing. The second is a partial refund of their partial payment. Did your auction state you would be keeping a fee if they backed out? If it didn't, you have to return their entire $200.

Even though you contacted Paypal, they still have to hear back from the buyer that the money was received before they close the dispute. It could be the buyer taking their time.

Not really a paypal problem. Non returnable or pay in full, gives the seller the complete guarantee he needs. Many listings have must pay immediate.

I don't understand how this is Paypal's fault. What were the terms of the sale? Did you say you would with hold a fee if the tickets were returned? Please explain why this is a Paypal error.

And it's the Sunday of a holiday weekend.

That was your bad, not paypals. You made several bad decisions here, but you live you learn. No more partial payments, no more random partial returns, and don't buy new tickets until your sale is a done deal. Not in any way paypals fault.

We had contract for ticket sale and part of money sent, but buyer later said it was too much and couldn't come up with the rest of the money. So we had to quickly find another buyer... for more than $100 less (concert this week).

I thought it was entirely fair to keep $15 since I had paypal fees of $6 and since they agreed to ticket purchase to keep minimal amount because of my loss.

I could have technically kept the money because I have a train of correspondence that confirms they were buying tickets and would send rest of money in evening, and they had agreed to buy tickets. But I don't have time for small claims court over this.

Tough situation, but paypal did agree to release hold on the funds after I sent all money back.

But I won't use paypal again... way too easy for a buyer to put a hold on funds and I have to prove I am right.

Could have been an expensive lesson... but it's way too easy for someone to make a claim. Ugggh. Hate people

Glad you got your funds free, I would never accept a partial payment.

As far as I know if you issue a refund PayPal refunds your fee, so you don't lose anything.

You made a big mistake - you used PayPal without reading their rules and understanding how it works. This was your fault, not PayPal's.

Yup, paypal refunds your fees if you refund an entire payment. Perhaps you should figure out how paypal works before using it erroneously and then trying to blame them for following their own policies.

Jeez, how much were those One Direction tickets when you bought them from Ticketmaster/Live Nation/wherever? I see the buyer sent you $200, with the promise of sending $200 more, but then they backed out so you had to sell them at a $1XX loss. Which, I'm guessing, means you sold them for $200 to a third party...with your "loss" being the additional $200 you thought the original purchaser was going to pay you for them. I don't get how you "lost" $1XX though. How much did you pay for the tickets originally? $200? $400? $75?

If those tickets were mid-$100 or more each from the venue, then concert ticket prices have really gotten out of hand. If you bought them on the secondary market, even more so. Just another reason to not patronize scalpers.

I realize that isn't the point, and I guess I'm poking the bear a bit with the question. Bottom line is, others are right on: this isn't a PayPal-at-fault issue in any way.

Try Craigslist next time. And meet the buyer at a police station for safety.

FYI, once I withdraw funds to my bank account, I always remove bank account and credit card information on file. This way, if buyer files a claim, they are SOL.

Paypal and now also eBay requires you to keep a CC or your Paypal account info on file for situations just like this. You can not remove your info from the site and actively maintain a Paypal or eBay account. I was prompted by eBay to update my CC or link my Paypal acct after sign in one day because the old CC had expired. I could not list, buy, or do anything on the site without doing this first.

OP, I'm glad you got the situation sorted out but remember to read the ToS next time, Paypal would have refunded your fees once you refunded the full amount.

Paypla refunds your Paypal fees, not your eBay listing fees. You also need to go back to your eBay auction and file a Non-Paying Bidder so eBay will refund you auction fees.

Totally OT, but this is a GREAT tip (meeting at a police station). I have a police station right down the road from my home, and have been wanting to sell a few things on Craigslist, but was afraid of setting up the meeting/exchange of funds. I think I'd feel safe doing it in the police station parking lot. Great idea!! Thanks!
