Don't Fear the Rain, We Have the "Ducky of Death!"-Jan '14 **Bonus TR DCA 9/1 x2

Love the last two updates. Sounds like Characterpalooza was very worth it for your family. I love the spontaneous interactions with the characters. I still have a drawing Goofy did on paper at Goofy's Kitchen in DL. It is great fun!!

That's pretty cool that Goofy drew something for you! I didn't know the furry characters could draw! :goodvibes

I think you're right that Characterpalooza setting allows for a lot more freedom and spontaneity for the characters and keeps things a lot more interesting than the standard meet and greet.

Hello!! I am here!! Loving your pictures, as usual! AKL is so gorgeous!!

I can't believe there are so many characters at Character Palooza!! I think I may have saw it when I was there, but I only saw about 3 characters? :confused3 I thought it was so random! Lol! Love how much attention Mulan gave your kids!

Thanks for joining in again! AKL was go beautiful and I hope to go back and photograph some more sometime since I feel like I've only scratched the surface of the resort.

I think if we had gotten in line for Snow White and the Queen there would have been a good chance that we would not have been able to meet many of the other characters. That line was pretty long. ;)

Our kids are huge fans of the shows on the Disney Jr channel. From Jake to Sofia to Doc. They know pretty much every song and can recite line from every episode. Naturally, our DHS plans significantly revolved around all things Disney Jr including the Disney Jr Live show. We hadn’t made it back since they added Doc and Sofia to the show so the kids were excited to see how the new version looked. On a side note, a couple of weeks after returning home from our trip we got to see the Disney Jr. On Stage Tour show which is very similar – similar plots, similar special effects. The only difference is instead of puppets, real people play the roles. Something is a little off when grown men and women play the roles of children. Anyway, I digress.

We got in line about 10 minutes before the doors opened. The rain began sprinkling again as we entered the queue. Fortunately, we were under the covered portion of the queue. Let me tell you, these shows are the perfect way to escape the rain. We found our seats on the floor and a little bit later the show began. Didn’t have the best angle for my pictures but then again I really wasn’t that excited about taking pictures of puppets. The show itself is cute and the kids ate it up. Mickey and his friends are trying to throw a surprise birthday party for Minnie and each character has a task they need to complete in preparation of the party.

Except they hit a wall on how to solve their problems so they look to the stories of Sofia, Doc, and Jake to get ideas for a solution. I think my favorite puppet was Cedric the sorcerer from Sofia the First. Probably because his puppet was about twice the size as the rest.

Doc once again reassuring the hypochondriac Chilly.

Jake and Scully.

Hook and Smee up to no good again. Spoiler alert!
There may be more to those bushes than meets the eye. ;)

And of course each set of stories found a way to incorporate things falling from the sky including bubbles. Kids go nuts over bubbles don’t they? Sort of like one of those fish from the Tank Gang in Nemo that goes crazy over “Bubbles! Bubbles!”

We're rich! We're all rich!!

And after the fun play was over the kids didn’t want to leave because they were trying to pick up as much paper gold doubloons and confetti as possible. Which reminds me. Where did I exactly pack all of that junk?

We left the one covered theater to head over to another at Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular. I saw this show for the very first time in October during my solo visit. My family and obviously my brother’s family hadn’t seen this show before. Actually, this was my brother’s family’s very first visit to DHS. They skipped the park during the one and only prior visit two years ago. Having scouted out the show just 3 months before, I was confident that the kids would really enjoy it. The explosions happened with enough distance. So I squeezed the show into our touring plans.

We had 15 minutes between the shows but made it over with 5 minutes to spare. I was worried that the show would be cancelled due to the rain but it apparently was still a go when we got there. I wanted a front row seat and at stage left. When we got there that exact spot was empty and calling our names. One of the big reasons why I wanted that spot was because I really wanted to get a good angle in taking a picture of Indy being chased by the giant boulder. As I described on my previous trip report, my last attempt was foiled when a family of four decided enter the theater with the show in progress and walk into the row in front of me right as the boulder started rumbling down. I ended up with 10 pictures that had nothing but the silhouettes of their heads completely obscuring the shots. So I was intent on trying again.

The volunteers were picked and having seen this show once before I quickly identified and kept my eye on the planted volunteer. You know, the guy who gets the snot beaten out by stunt-Marion.

The show started without a hitch and moved through the opening sequence.

Yes, Indy. There's a gigantic hole right there that's about to swallow you whole.

And finally we reached the point where the boulder usually makes its entrance. The music piped up. There were rumbling sound effects. Fire every where. Annnnd?

But alas no boulder and I hear the “director” yell CUT! Noooooooooooooo. They explained that they were skipping that part of the opening sequence due to the rain and that’s when I realized we were going to be in for a very abbreviated show. During the streets of Cairo scenes pretty much the second half of the show was cut out. No ladders. No swinging off ropes. No jumping off tall buildings.

Look at that concentration!

They reenacted the truck explosion scene BUT announced that this would be the last scene. Double nooooooooooooo!

I was pretty disappointed since that meant that they were skipping the entire plane fight scene and explosion sequence. After the show prematurely ended I was fully expecting to see some underwhelmed looks from my brother and the kids. But it turned out that I was the only one disappointed because the rest of my gang had never seen the show before and didn’t know what they were missing. They still thought the show was very entertaining. I’ll take it :goodvibes

I guess I'll have to hope that my third time will be the charm and I will finally photograph the boulder scene! :thumbsup2

:rotfl2: I know what you mean with the gold doubloons. DS has doubloons falling out of his pockets all afternoon after we see the show.:lmao::rotfl:

What a bummer on the Indiana Show being shortened and not getting the bolder shot. Double whammy. Your family really missed out on some great scenes. Oh well another reason to see it next time and it will be like seeing a completely new show.

Yeah, I gotta agree that there's a little something unsettling about adults playing kids, thus the terror that is Meet and Greet Sofia, lol. Seriously though, it would be MUCH creepier if she was a face character.

OK so I've never seen this show before, but now that I know there's bubbles... :scratchin

Awwww man, the last time I saw Indy (I skipped it entirely on my 2 trips last year), no boulder either. But was some kind of malfunction that time. Boo-urns.

Haha, the beauty of newbies... they have no idea what they missed. :thumbsup2

Yay for Characterpalooza!!!!!! That's just fun to say. Kind of like Restaurantasaurus. Or however it's spelled.

I love that the characters escorted the kids to the other characters! I'm generally the type who likes things neat and orderly, but that looks like a lot of fun!

That's very disappointing about the semi-Indy show. I've only seen it once but I thought it was really well done. Crossing my fingers that you manage to get that boulder shot at some point because I imagine that would make a really sweet picture.

Ahh - Indian Jones. I have not seen that show in FOREVER! Great pictures. I just love them. They make me want to go see the show like NOW!

Okay, getting myself all caught up!

I'm so glad y'all were able to be literally right place, right time for Characterpalooza! Isn't it so amazing when the character just start flooding the street?? That was the same friend of Mulan we met at Characterpalooza, and she was just the sweetest. Love how she befriended DD and led her around to the other characters. The interaction with Stitch is priceless! This update reminded me I never went back to look at your album on Facebook! I saw it on my phone when you posted it, but I can never figure out how to look at all the pictures in an album on my phone. Going to do that now!

Paxton absolutely loves the Disney Jr show, as I'm sure every kid does at that age group. I would like it significantly more if they had chairs or benches to sit on, though! Sitting on the floor is rough. :rotfl: I am pretty sure no kid on the planet can resist the appeal of bubbles falling from the ceiling.

Too bad you got the short version of Indy, but at least the family enjoyed it. Just imagine how impressed they will be next trip if you get to see the full length show!

Pics look great ......Hopefully you will get the shot next time:thumbsup2

Thank you! :thumbsup2 I hope so too.

:rotfl2: I know what you mean with the gold doubloons. DS has doubloons falling out of his pockets all afternoon after we see the show.:lmao::rotfl:

You're right! The show will still feel fresh to them when we see it again.

I still haven't located where I put all those paper doubloons. I know I packed them because DD and DS made sure of that when we were checking out.

Yeah, I gotta agree that there's a little something unsettling about adults playing kids, thus the terror that is Meet and Greet Sofia, lol. Seriously though, it would be MUCH creepier if she was a face character.

I agree. Disney was stuck between a rock and a hard place when trying to figure out how to create the Disney Jr. characters and they went with the less creepy version - those with gigantic heads disproportionate to their bodies. :rotfl:

There were a lot of those newbie moments for my brother and his family. :goodvibes

Totally, it's a fun word! Disney is filled with these fun words. Characterpalooza! Mount Wannahockaloogie! :rotfl:

That was my favorite part of characterpalooza. The spontaneity of it all!

I'm debating making a special trip to DHS just for an hour or two in October just to get this shot that now I'm obsessed with. :rotfl:

Ahh - Indian Jones. I have not seen that show in FOREVER! Great pictures. I just love them. They make me want to go see the show like NOW!

With all of the cold weather we've had, I would love to warm my hands on some of those explosions from the show! ;)

We've had this friend of Mulan before and she was so attentive with DD. She spent a good 5 minutes with her in China at Epcot flipping through DD's autograph book and commenting on all of the different signatures.

That's a good point about sitting on the floor. You're right, some kind of seating structure would be nicer. :thumbsup2

Man that's a short Indy scene. Another reason to plan another Disney trip!!! 3rd times a charm!!!! DHS is nice when any rain comes- close to a lot of inside attractions without tracking across the park.
Thanks for the new scenes at Disney Jr too. It's been a few years for us too.

I'm envious of you Disney junior show shots. My husband had our good camera, and what I attempted to take with my phone just didn't cut it. Thankfully, we have dozens of gold doubloons to remember the experience!

Totally agree with you about rainy weather in DHS. Pretty much every major attraction is covered or indoors so it's easy to navigate through the weather.

I found a gold paper doubloon this afternoon while cleaning up the playroom for our kids. They're everywhere! :rotfl:

Sounds like you got there just in time to wait out some rain, (theme of this TR? :lmao: ) Shows are generally such a great way to get away from the rain, usually the rain is gone by the time the shows are over.
Despite not having the best angle, you still got some fun pics. Glad your kids liked the show!
I love Indy, but I admit I did skip it last year. I've had the show cut short once for the rain too, but how disappointing that you didn't get to see the boulder! After all that planning! Hope you get back to see a full show (with boulder!)

So funny about trying to remember where the gold doubloons were packed! We always have to pack them too and they are the hardest thing to keep up with! Especially the gold foil ones! :lmao:

Those are special treasures of the trip and I try to keep up with them as I know one day she won't care. My eight year old is already "too cool" for Disney Junior and it makes me sad.

CHARACTERPALOOZA! I loved everything about it. We actually planned it and stood around like loons for about 10 minutes until it started (my DH thought I was insane). Our best interaction was Pinocchio strolling up to Jelly and taking his newly minted lightsaber from Tatooine Traders and trying to play with it (it was taped up). I had the camera put away by that point since all the characters were leaving, so all I have a the top of Pinocchio's head...

I admit, I teared up at the Green Army Man hug. ACK! That get me every time. OK, I have to finish reading!

Ok Dave, I've tried reading a few times, but I keep getting distracted before I get caught up. Anyway, I've read through it and one thing that really caught my attention was this:

I really tried my best to steer the kids to Snow White and the Queen who were meeting as a pair but DD wanted nothing to do with that couple as she was worried about the Queen’s behavior.
Snow White and the Queen met together!?!??!?!?!?!? That is awesome!!! And weird. But mostly awesome!!!!!

Your pictures of AKL are great. I especially love the ones looking at the savanna at night with the fog. It adds a really nice effect to it.

I'm glad that you were in the right place at the right time to catch characterpalooza. I think we might just have to see if we can work it out to be there for it on our trip.

Good strategy to dodge the rain showers by checking out the shows. I assume the rain/wet surface is why the last scene was cut for Indy? :confused3 I'm sure Disney Jr. was a hit with the kids. It is amazing how crazy they all go over those gold doubloons! :rotfl:

Yep, dodging the rain became a routine during this trip :goodvibes And you're absolutely right that the show lengths of 20-40 minutes are perfect for taking shelter since that's the amount of time it usually takes in FL for the rain pattern to change. ;)

Officially subbing now that I've been personally invited ;) I love your trip reports, David!

:hyper:

So glad you made it over! Thanks for joining! :thumbsup2

Our DD7 is on the verge of moving on from Disney Jr - I can tell. We'll make the most of it while it lasts. ;)

We had our lightsabers taped up as well after checking out from Tatooine Traders. The CM called it "putting the safety on" :lmao:

That's a great story though with Pinocchio wielding a lightsaber!

I thought it was so cool that Snow and the Queen were meeting together! I saw pictures somewhere online where the Queen is offering a red apple to Snow White. Too funny.

Yeah, that's what I assumed about cutting the show short. Those Cairo buildings and the entire set for the air plane sequence are outside the covered portion of the theater so I'm sure it can get quite hazardous with the wet surfaces.

If your kids watch anything on the Disney Jr. Channel then you would recognize the title of this update as the lyrics to this one song promoting Jake and Sofia for the TV shows as well as the touring stage version. Somehow it also turned out to be the perfect description of our Friday. I had a lot of things lined up for this particular afternoon and evening that culminated with a dinner at BOG and the Pirates and Pals Fireworks Voyage, both of which I will detail in a separate post.

To attend a dinner at the Beast’s castle and later hitch a ride on Hook and Smee’s cruises, I thought it was only appropriate that the kids would be dressed for the occasion. So for DS and DN, I made reservations for The Pirates League and for DD a sitting at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique. For awhile I tried to sell the Pirates League to DD. I showed her first the Empress Package but that didn’t seem to float her interest. Then I showed her the Mermaid Package. At first she seemed to get excited about the idea but then she found out that a mermaid fin costume was not included and nixed the idea. She had been asking and asking for a make over at BBB for the past three years so I finally gave in and made the appointment.

In order to get all of us in the right frame of mind, I led my family on another type of pirate cruise before DS’ appointment time came up: Pirates of the Caribbean. It probably would have made more sense to have gone on it after the make overs were over but I had other plans for that. Plus the rain was starting to pick up again and I didn’t feel like venturing too far from the nice covered confines of the pirates area. I should also point out at this point that DB, DSIL, DN were back at AKL taking a mid-day break. My touring style eventually caught up for them and they wanted to spend a few hours by the pool side even with the rain.

Timing worked out well because the ride had just re-opened after temporarily closing down. So the wait was pretty non-existent. I attached the rental lens I brought with me for use on these dark rides. For my fellow photography enthusiasts I rented the Canon 35mm f/2.0 with IS. The kids were once again going through their anxiety about that little dip the boat takes. DS must have asked me a hundred times while we were waiting to board just exactly how big was the dip and if he would be getting wet. I tried to reassure both kids that it’s not as bad as they remember but obviously that wasn’t enough.

DD spotted the Merman or Mermaid skeleton on her own this time. She’s growing up so fast.

It’s still a tough ride to photograph. The lens worked out well. I still need to remind myself to set for a slightly faster shutter speed next time around as some of the animatronic motions came out with a motion blur evidenced by this dude's hand with the key.

I think this scene is my favorite the photograph especially from afar.

Little did we know that this wouldn’t be our last encounter with Captain Jack Sparrow.

I can say for the very first time, both kids had a blast on this ride and neither one of them was spooked by it. Yes! Finally!

We still had a few more minutes left before the PL appointment time so we looked around in the gift shop.

Mickey's looking mighty fierce in this one.

Kids were goofing around with each other trying out different swords and hooks. I almost bought a souvenir replica of the famous jail key chain from the ride. You know, the one that the dog is holding on to. But as is the case every time I think about buying something from a gift shop, I fooled myself that I would be coming back again later in the trip to purchase it. Which I never did.

Finally it was time for The Pirates League for DS.

For the past several months, he had really gotten into the whole pirates play at home. Every time Jake and the Neverland Pirates is on TV he runs around the house looking for either his Jake sword or Hook’s hook ;) He loves to growl and put on his “menacing” pirate face. So I knew that he was ready for a pirate makeover. My brother in the mean time had just texted me saying that they would be skipping out on the PL for my nephew as they wanted to spend some extra time by the pool. I was a little bummed out about this because I thought the boys would have a great time being pirates together. I asked him if he was sure because I also didn’t want DN to get jealous of DS and DD’s makeovers when we did regroup later in the day and he assured me that they would prep DN about it. So when we checked in, it was only for DS.

It took DS a few minutes at check in to figure out which costume and look he wanted to go with. He eventually picked the Hook make over and the blue/white costume. He looked totally awesome when we put his costume on him. I could tell his excitement level was slowly starting build up as he admired his new look in the mirror inside his dressing room. The costume came with a top, pants, faux boots, and a triangle hat.

Once we came out of the dressing room, we waited a couple of minute before being called up to find out what his pirate name was going to be. He went through the name picking ritual by spinning the wheel that appeared to be spin a small treasure chest. Sort of like rolling the dice. I really liked the set up they had for this ritual. Joseph Bluefish was his chosen pirate name. This is a look into the room.

Once his name was picked, we waited another few minutes before being called up to the makeover chair. In the mean time, DW had to take DD over to the Castle for her BBB appointment. I made her appointment about 30 minutes after DS’ appointment in hopes that I could catch both make overs with my camera.

Once DS settled into his chair he did very well holding still as he got his Hook eyebrows, mustache, and beard on. It was all very cute although I could tell he was a little nervous about the whole process and he failed to crack a smile despite the CM’s best efforts.

Here's what the make over area looks like.

Loved all of the decorations lining the top half of the room.

So near the end of his make over, Jack Sparrow and his first mate entered the room. Apparently when it’s raining as it had been pretty much all week Jack likes to make these surprise visits as his tutorial show outside is cancelled. Thank you RAIN!! Whoo hoo!

I think I was more excited at Jack’s sudden appearance than DS was. He actually had this very weary look on his face that told me he wasn’t quite sure what to make of this pirate. When Jack came over to his chair and tried to start up a conversation DS remained very quiet. So I tried to break the ice for him and asked DS “Do you know who this is?” to which DS replied “Yes. Captain Sparrow”. Jack loved that response saying that most people seem to forget to call him by his proper rank “Captain” these days and invited DS to join his crew with a handshake. In retrospect, I should have tried to have gotten a picture of Captain Sparrow and myself.

Joseph Bluefish was announced to the room as a pirate once everything was done. Then we were ushered into the “Secret Room” which I was totally not expecting and thought it was a great finishing touch to the experience. This is where they get you the souvenir photograph with your new pirate posing by giant globe. But before they take the picture, the pirate CM leads the child on a treasure hunt in the room. He told DS that Jack Sparrow had hidden a treasure somewhere in the room and helped him locate a gold pirate medallion with a secret message encoded on it. DS really got a kick out of that.

Here they are on the treasure hunt inside the secret room.

Once we left the secret room it was time to pony up the cash and decide whether we wanted to purchase the pictures. I of course gave in and purchased it but was kicking myself later that night when I compared their picture with the ones I took with my camera. Oh well.

While all of this was happening for DS, DD was getting the full Castle (?) package at BBB. Sadly I had to miss a lot of her make over as I was still finishing up with DS’s Pirates League experience when her appointment time came up. As soon as we finished I loaded up DS in the stroller and trekked over to the castle. DS fell asleep on the way over so I had to park him and myself inside the Castle and call DW.

She and I briefly switched places so I could grab a few pictures of her make over in progress. She was just beaming in her chair when I walked in. While she was having her hair done, she was also being entertained by one of the Royal Majesty Makers. I believe he was the squire who goes by the name Tobias. Once again, the rain forced these characters indoors. Yay Rain!!

Anyway, Tobias was running back and forth between DD and another girl three chairs down. Apparently the other girl was from Virginia as well and so the squire was acting as a human messenger between the girls to see if they had anything else in common. It was quite amusing. I had lost track of time before DW called asking to switch places again so I spent the remainder of the time sitting at a bench in a covered area across from CRT’s check in podium as DS continued to snooze away.

Took this pictures while waiting.

By the time DD emerged from the Castle Couture after her glam photo session in her Aurora costume and make up, I barely recognized her as she walked by in front of me!

For the post make over activities I had FP+ signed up for myself and DD to visit Rapunzel and Snow White inside the Fairytale Hall while DW and DS were signed up for Peter Pan. Of course DS being sound asleep Peter Pan was not possible. So I took DD over to meet the two princesses while DW rolled DS over to BOG for our dinner reservation which was only 20 minutes away. I was worried that DD and I would be late for our ADR but the wait time for the FP+ lanes were only 5 minutes. This queue for the FP+ turned out to provide the best backdrop for some photos of DD. It really gave off the appearance of being inside a castle and since I didn’t have much of an opportunity to take pictures of DD during her BBB experience, I fully took advantage of the 5 minutes we spent waiting.

Rapunzel was great as usual with DD immediately recognizing that DD had just been at BBB.

Rapunzel went on and on about the BBB is the best place to go whenever her hair gets tangled up and needs extensive brushing. DD in the meantime was playing her part as a new princess which meant staying very reserved during interactions with both princesses. It was very cute.

Snow White fawned over DD’s make over and twirled her around a couple of times. DD loved every minute of these interactions.

I highly recommend both of these experiences which was very memorable for the kids – something that they won’t forget for awhile. I was a little worried that DD’s make up and glitter would be too “overdone” but the Fairy Godmother-in-training did an awesome job keeping things fairly balanced. It definitely set the stage for our dinner and cruise which I’ll tell you all about on a different post.
