Because a vehicle that has a racing engine where the RPMs keep going up can and will explode. Go and google it.
No need to. If the accelerator sticks you calmly put the car in neutral. Done.

Yes , yes , and yes. I think a lot of people are totally overreacting. I actually had two previous cars (both Oldsmobiles) that did this fairly regularly. I would just put the car in neutral and pump the pedal until it unstuck.

The peddle is still "stuck" and the engine continues to rev.
Ugh! I really didn't think I needed to chart every step but....
1) Place the car in neutral
2) Apply the brakes until you stop
3) Turn off the engine
Is the engine still revving now?

And yes, there is a SMALL chance that while you are applying the brakes enough to stop and turn the engine off that the engine RPMs will go high enough to cause the car to explode so put it in neutral and stop it quickly as possible.
I'm not saying the sticking accelerator isn't a serious problem but I'd at least want to TRY to stop safely than continue to speed out of control until I'm definitely killed or kill someone else.
Stay clam, put in neutral, use the brake and the e-brake to stop. Turn the car off. Get out!
Before you get stopped and off the road the engine is in neutral and racing. So it was racing during that time. If the RPMs go too high the engine will noy need to be turned off. Then it will stop revving.
if If IF IF IF.....
yes, you are correct there is a EXTREMELY slim chance that in the EXTREMELY slim chance that your accelerator sticks and you put your car in neutral it MIGHT explode before you can get it stopped.
OMG - Does THAT make you happy????

I had to change lanes at least seven times on my way to work this morning to avoid those exploding Toyotas.

Calm down people..this isn't that big a deal.
I'm pretty sure the families that had loved ones killed by this defect would disagree.
Be careful in a non-recall car. We just had a news story yesterday of a car not involved in the recall having the stuck accelerator problem.
(I posted the story in one of the other Toyota threads, I think there are four today and at least another two or three others in the past month.)
I think this is just the "tip of the iceberg." This has been on-going for a while now and just now seeing media-focus. Personally, I would be wondering why, after being aware of this problem for all of this time, they have chosen to now just do something about it--but hey, that's just me. I would also be wondering why there aren't more involved in this recall, especially when there are reports of identical problems happening in those vehicles also--I don't mean the one I read about yesterday, but the Lexus that off-duty police officer was driving. Why are these not a part of the recall?
