Don't drive recalled Toyotas, transportation chief says

Yes , yes , and yes. I think a lot of people are totally overreacting. I actually had two previous cars (both Oldsmobiles) that did this fairly regularly. I would just put the car in neutral and pump the pedal until it unstuck.

.

I had a car that did this too, it was not a Toyota. I love my Highlander.

No need to. If the accelerator sticks you calmly put the car in neutral. Done.

The peddle is still "stuck" and the engine continues to rev.

"Toyota's unintended acceleration recall debacle continues. First it was the zip-tied floor mats, then the physical pedals were set to be replaced; now we've learned Toyota will add a software solution to future cars to put an end to the unintended acceleration fiasco.

By 2011, all new Toyota, Lexus, and Scion vehicles sold globally will have updated software installed on vehicle engine control units (ECU) that puts in place a brake override system, said Toyota spokesperson Mike Michels. This system will automatically idle vehicles when both the brake and throttle are simultaneously depressed. The installation of this system is the latest attempt by the manufacturer to address issues of unintended acceleration that have recently come to light and triggered an approximately 4.2 million vehicle recall of Lexus and Toyota models in the United States. "

It is looking more and more like an electronic problem and the fix will not be 2 weeks.

Many cars now lock the steering column when the par is off or in park.

Ugh! I really didn't think I needed to chart every step but....

1) Place the car in neutral

2) Apply the brakes until you stop

3) Turn off the engine

Is the engine still revving now?

And yes, there is a SMALL chance that while you are applying the brakes enough to stop and turn the engine off that the engine RPMs will go high enough to cause the car to explode so put it in neutral and stop it quickly as possible.

I'm not saying the sticking accelerator isn't a serious problem but I'd at least want to TRY to stop safely than continue to speed out of control until I'm definitely killed or kill someone else.

Stay clam, put in neutral, use the brake and the e-brake to stop. Turn the car off. Get out!

Before you get stopped and off the road the engine is in neutral and racing. So it was racing during that time. If the RPMs go too high the engine will not need to be turned off. Then it will stop revving.

if If IF IF IF.....

yes, you are correct there is a EXTREMELY slim chance that in the EXTREMELY slim chance that your accelerator sticks and you put your car in neutral it MIGHT explode before you can get it stopped.

OMG - Does THAT make you happy????

I had to change lanes at least seven times on my way to work this morning to avoid those exploding Toyotas.

It's going to take a fair amount of time for your engine to overheat due to redlining it. The best thing to do is what Tink wrote above. That's what my mechanic, my father, my FIL.. everyone I trust implicitly with my cars says.

It important to tell all the facts and the fact is some could explode.

Oh please. So where are all these news articles where you have 5 seconds between the pedal sticking and blowing up!:rotfl:

I guess if I put the pedal to the metal to enter a freeway or pass a slow moving vehicle I put myself at risk of exploding:rotfl2:

This reminds me of post 9-11 when 2 0r 3 anthrax tainted letters turned up in Washington and people living in the middle of the corn belt were afraid to open thie mail.

A handful of cars get stuck accelerators and now we have all Toyota drivers exploding.

Calm down people..this isn't that big a deal.

DH & I have Toyotas. My Highlander is not part of the recall, his Camry is. We'll be swapping cars tomorrow so that I can take my Mom to a doctor's appt. (she has a hard time geting into my small SUV). I guess I'll be driving her around in the "death trap".

I'm pretty sure the families that had loved ones killed by this defect would disagree.

THey are not attributing more deaths to this problem. Who knows how many more there are out there.

I hope the ones laughing at this do not have to pay the price that some have. They are so sure they will do everything right and just walk away. I sure hope they are right.

I own one in the recall. Won't stop driving it....will bring it in when I'm contacted...will buy another in a heartbeat. I know what to do if the pedal sticks...

I wish there was this much uproar against those who drive talking on cell phones and texting! WAY TOO many lose their lives every day due to this!

Be careful in a non-recall car. We just had a news story yesterday of a car not involved in the recall having the stuck accelerator problem.

(I posted the story in one of the other Toyota threads, I think there are four today and at least another two or three others in the past month.)

I think this is just the "tip of the iceberg." This has been on-going for a while now and just now seeing media-focus. Personally, I would be wondering why, after being aware of this problem for all of this time, they have chosen to now just do something about it--but hey, that's just me. I would also be wondering why there aren't more involved in this recall, especially when there are reports of identical problems happening in those vehicles also--I don't mean the one I read about yesterday, but the Lexus that off-duty police officer was driving. Why are these not a part of the recall?

I agree with you. I just read today that Prius's should be looked at, too.
