Don't do me any favors!

I had mono in college. They diagnosed me at the student health center and my liver was swollen as well. I was sent home immediately (it was end of term and just before finals).

Right or wrong, health insurance needs to be a priority now-a-days. I've had friends who worked jobs just to get the health insurance for them and their children.

Barring being homeless, I would find the money for at least a bare bones policy and never go without.

I'm glad your DD has been properly diagnosed and hope she will feel better very soon.

Nikki read this thread and said "gon! Icks nad a fuddy gory!"

Translation: Mom! It's not a funny story!

She wants me to write a funny ER trip report to share with you. I was making her laugh alot while we were going through this, I tend to be rather entertaining when I am nervous.

Right now I am having a real hard time finding any humor in anything that happened to her, but at her request tonight while I am at work I will think about it.

Thanks for the love guys and the advice. I think this is a problem that needs to be addressed in this state before lives are lost. And thanks for the links ennazus, I will look at this.

I have heard from serval people that I need to write to the newspaper about her experience and to talk to Admin about the incident. I have a feeling that I will be blown off.

Guess it's time for momma bear to start blowing some whistles.

I work at a hospital, ok, several hospitals, but they ones I am at take complaints very serious.
I would complain and talk to anyone you can.

Hope CN gets better soon.

It's easy for the doctor not to see anything if you aren't looking.

But, he did look at her and give her a few instructions and all that. I doubt you can do anything about the doctor.
However, I would do what the pp said and get ahold of the people that can change this law. Or make it actually work for the patients.

Just wanted to say

The way I understand it, private hospitals don't have to treat uninsured people. SMMC is not a private hospital and the more people I have talked to, the more people are telling me thier own horror stories of that hospital.

My friend is a fireman, they call it "The meat market."

The first doctor knew she had a temp of 103 and sever swelling in her throat. He never checked her stomache to see her liver was also swollen. He did nothing to reduce her temp. He never did a throat culture.

All i can say is WOW!!!! I can't believe they wouldn't treat her!! If i were that dr. i would feel so bad!! So sorry you had to go through that!!!

Gosh Robin - I am soo sorry nobody took care of Nikki at SMMC .. I have never been there and don't think I will try it insurance or not !! ( i go Maine Med or Brighton ) I vote for Story to the Portland Press , Lodging a complaint with SMMC and calling all the government officals here in the state !!

Nikki hope you are feeling well soon ( beware with mono it takes a long time to feel Normal again ) Take care and take it easy till you do feel better so there won't be a repeat .

Michelle

Prayers are with Nikki for a speedy recovery.

She's lucky she has a figher for a Mom. It could have progressed and gotten worse if you hadn't gone else where and insisted.

In spite of how furious I was reading your thread -I laughed too.
You are funny even when you are not trying. You can envoke more than one emotion - a true gift.

 :wizard: to Nikki

What an awful experience for your DD to be going thru.

Hope she is feeling better and wishing her the best.

I know a lot of states have passed laws preventing people from being denied medical treatment. SMM should be reported for failure to provide medical treatment.

Robin -

Sorry to hear about Nikki. I hope she gets over it soon!!

If I were you, I'd paste the OP into an e-mail and send it to Governor Baldacci

As a political staffer, and one who deals with health care issues, stories like this are attention getters, for a good reason. What Nikki went through at SMMC should never happen to anyone, with or without insurance. I have heard stories of ER docs not treating because they were afraid the insurance company would deny the claim. And that is for someone with insurance!

Seriously, let the governor know. That's why you pay taxes to pay his salary.

What a horrible situation! That first doctor was probably following hospital procedure but no matter what the rules are, that hospital is playing games with people's lives.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do. And best wishes to Nikki.

I'm glad to hear she finally got the care she needed! While she is recovering, pehaps you should see Towncrier about getting her a bell until she is back to normal.

Once she is back to normal, or as normal as a commando 16 year old girl can be, you may want to hang this in her room.

I took my daughter at age 17 to the urgent care center for the same symptoms. The doctor, who apparently was a mostly retired doc and none too steady, diagnosed mono immediately. He tried to admit her to the hospital but the damn HMO refused. He told me her spleen (not liver) was very swollen and cautioned me to drive very slowly and carefully and avoid bumps so her spleen did not burst. It took her about 3 or 4 weeks to recover.

I'm sure Nikki will be well within a month. I don't know if the doctor did anything wrong or if he was just incompetent. I would certainly file a complaint with the hospital.

Best to all of you.

You should copy this word for word and send it to the editor of your paper, your state representatives, and others powers such as the AMA with the name of that MD who "did not want to run up bills". Shame on them!

Hope Nikki feels better soon!

Words cannot be said on this board but boy am I thinking them!

Hope she is feeling better soon and Curses to that Hospital!

I so agree with everyone about sending it to as many politicians and newspapers as possible. Things like this have to be bought to everyone's attention so that changes are made. Thank God your daughter is going to be okay and that, once again, your story has a happy ending.

So sorry you had to go through this. I hope Nikki feels better soon!:sunny:
