Sorry that this happened to you and your DD. I'm glad she is feeling better and hope that she is 100% soon.

Happy Thoughts to all,

mt2

I was reading that Anchorage (I believe) will no longer treat people who have no insurance (or form of payment upfront)... I think tho there is a law ER's must treat anyone who walks in. I could be wrong (there is a sign in our ER).

That stinks!!! I had mono the same way when I was 17...the liver and spleen enlarged, throat swollen beyond belief, 4 day hospital stay...the whole 9 yards. It took me months to bounce back (really, like a year before I felt totally like myself again)...I lost 20 lbs (and I was thin to begin with).

Funny thing is I had insurance and it still took 5 different doctors (4 weeks of being sick) to dx me...the one who finally did was an old timer general MD....(although this was a LONG time ago, LOL)

I hope she feels better soon...hate to say it, but her energy level will probably be low for a long time.

That first hospital could have cost you your daughter!!!!!
~I'm hoping you'll get more details about that law~
They should be paying you!!!!

:grouphug:

Hugs to you and your family, I hope Nikki's feeling better soon...

Hate to second guess, but I wanted to let you know that about half way through, I thought, hmmm, that sounds like mono, bet she needs some prednisone for that throat.
LOL, I thought the same thing about 1/2 way through the OP.

I bet that was scary, glad shes getting better

I also would file a complaint and think a letter to the newspaper sounds good.

Beyond that, I can't say what I think.

P&PD for you and Nikki

As I was reading this I too thought, MONO! Right off the bat. I had it when I was a senior also on top of Strep (yes, strep and mono at the same time and they ARE two different treatments - NOT FUN!!! and then on top of it got a bladder infection). I am so glad you took her to another place and they treated her. It took me a very long time (years) to recover from my mono because my immune system got hit really bad after having severe pneumonia several years in a row. Still, to this day, takes me a very long time to get "unsick" and I almost always have to go to the doc and get meds. I don't get a cold, I go right into bronchitis or sinusitis. I so feel for her - tell to always take care of herself, wish someone would have told me that!!!!

OMG - what a horrible situation! I feel so bad for you and your daughter....poor baby. I had no idea that hospitals would not treat you w/o health ins. I'll say a prayer she is on the mend.

You gave me a chuckle with new words that can roll off the tongue. I think we've all experienced some when being a fierce Mom. ;)

Godspeed ^i^
 Sandie

:(

Oh Wobin, that is just terrible, and inexcusable! Iw ish I could offer advice on your state's "law" regarding patients without insurance, but I haven't a clue where to start looking.

I hope Nikki is back to her old self in no time at all to enjoy this exciting period in her life. It is reassuring to know that she is already starting to recover.

I'll work on getting you answers - my cousin is a Doc in the emergency room at York.

I am glad she is getting better - funny thing and scary too, we were just up in Waterville this past weekend and my son woke up on Saturday with 103 and his throat was so sore he wouldn't take any medicines. After we forced Motrin down his throat with massaging and screaming he got better, but his throat, and now mine, is very sore still. I thought we would have to go to the hospital up there and I was dreading it.

Glad she is on the road back. :D

I wouldn't sue or report it to the paper....I'd send her back in there with her whistle when she is better! :scared1: :p

You'd think the hospitals would be more concerned about forking out money for malpractice. I hope she gets to feeling better soon.

Wobin, I'm sorry to hear about Nikki's battle with mono. I'm glad she is feeling better. I echo what other mono sufferes have said. Nikki will be low energy for some time, but she will get back to normal (it took me about 6 months, but I was diagnosed early on). I'm sorry it took so long to get the diagnosis and treatment!

Hugs to you and Nikki.

OK - here's what I know now from my DH who works in health care policy here in MA and thereby pays a little attention to other states. I wasn't able to immediately reach my cousin. Maine, about a year and half ago to two years ago passed an ambitious new health care program that provides universal coverage for kids through assessments to hospitals and employers. It has a catchy anchronim but he could not remember it, something like BADGER or something.

What you NEED to do is to call your state representative and your state senator and talk to them about this new law and talk to them about your experience. They are who can help you and will provide you with the information you need to be armed with for your, God Forbid, next hospital visit. They also need to know of any flaws appearing in the system.

I did not have time to look up your reps and I don't know exactly where you live. They are part time in Maine - but as a former legislative staffer, let me tell you that staff can be enormously helpful and are many times more knowledgable than the rep. is.

PLEASE CALL THEM.

Get well soon Nikki, I know your mom must be missing hearing you blow your whistle.

Robin, here in Connecticut not only is it unethical for an ER to not treat a patient, it is illegal.

If I was in charge of billing at York I would mail the bill to SMMC.

 What a horrible thing to go through!!! My thoughts have some explicatives that i cant write down but just know they are there. With as well as you wirte and express yourself I would be writing letters everywhere...You could get things done!!

My thoughts and prayers are with Nikki for a speedy recovery...got to get enough air out of those lungs to blow the whistle!

Robin, I am sorry Nikki went through this. I hope she feels better soon. I had mono when I was 21, it was not fun.

why on earth doesn't she have health insurance?

as for the law -- well, geneerally speaking, not every hopsital ER is required to treat uninsured patients.

as for the medical issues -- obviously the docotr didn't see anything on his inital exam that would indicate how sick Nikki was, because otherwise he would have felt compelled to order the tests regardless of the cost. and he did tell her to follow up with her own doctor.

I know it wasn't a very pleasant experience but I don't think the doctor at the first hopsital did anything improper.
