Donald's Defiant Dashers (AKA Triple D's/Duckies/The Ducks) Dashing into 2010

I am planning on doing my first run this weekend outdoors. For the past couple of weeks ( I just started this whole running thing) I had been on the treadmill. But I figured it's about time I take the plunge and take it outside. It's interesting about how nervous I feel about going outside.

Duckies, Please remember to stay hydrated! With this heat and humidity it's very easy to get heat exhaustion.:goodvibes

Agreed. I cut my run short this morning due to beginning of the "heat queezies" = not enough water. Bad on me. :sad2:

I did my first 6 mile run this morning and got my first running related blister. :( I think that it was because of the socks that I was wearing, as the blister is on the second toe of my left foot and nowhere else. I guess that just teaches me to stick with my running socks.

Aww! I understand! My toe gets exactly the same blister. it's horrible. bah.

I got a blood blister on my little toe last night thanks to my clumsiness.

I developed PF during my last pregnancy, and so for the past year it comes and goes. And it hurts! I don't really notice any relationship between working out and exacerbating it as it has flared during periods of relative inactivity as well. So I don't want to give up my newly starting training program. But I do want it not to get worse. I am sitting with an ice pack on it, per a trainer friend's recs. I am hoping that as I lose weight, the PF will also get better. But in the meantime, is there anything else I should be doing? Any special insoles? Stretches?

I have suffered off and on for 6 years with PF, since I have been running, thankfully I have been pain free. I have done the foot doctor thing and had custom inserts made that I think increased my foot pain. I have found getting a new pair of everyday walking shoes every 6 months or so has helped my feet.
For a stretch what works for me is putting the front of my foot on a step or curb and stretching the arch down (hopefully that makes sense, its hard to describe). For icing I have a frozen Coke bottle that I roll the bottom of my foot on while sitting down. It stretches the tendon and ices at the same time. :thumbsup2
I have low arches and I just got a pair of inserts from the running store that that relieves heel and arch pain, but also will keep me from over rotating my feet while running which should stop me from pushing off with my big toe and creating toe pain and causing the massive blister I got on my 12 mile run last Saturday. The inserts are from Powerstep the pinnacle model.
Someone that knows their stuff at a running store should be able to hook you up with something that is comfortable.

From the posts here and on Facebook it sounds like everyone is doing good with the training.:cool1:
Debbie and I signed up for the Mickeys Halloween Fun Run for Saturday morning. I plan on taking it easy and just enjoy running around the MK and take a lot of pictures. We will also be at Boma on Friday night for the DIS meet, space is still available if anyone is interested in joining us.

Have a good weekend everyone.

Hey all,
I have been away due to my big move into my first home and not having internet for a while... I am now back!!

I finally got out to run yesterday, it was humid but not to bad. I only did a mile to get myself loosened up and am on my way out to run today.

My new home has a great park near by I can run to and run around. Time to get myself in gear for this BIG EVENT in October!!!!

Hi All:banana:,

Shirisha: one other stretch I forgot about is rolling a tennis ball on the bottom of your foot while sitting down. It stretches the tendon and massages the foot.

I ran 11 miles yesterday morning and my legs were pretty sore after words. It was either because I did too much cross training on the leg machines on Friday or the new inserts changed the way I run and my legs are getting used to it. No blisters this time :cool1:. With all this running and this groups continued support, I have finally broke the 20 pound barrier :goodvibes.

I'm getting a little excited for our short trip to WDW at the end of the month, even Debbie  is excited and I'm the big Disney fan in the family. Debbie likes going, but she is a "been their done that" person.

Have a good week everyone. :hippie:

Congratulations!!!! You are really doing great and a big source of inspiration to me.

Keep up the great running!!!:woohoo:

Hi Ducks! So 11 of us are doing the W&D now!! woohoo! :cool1:

I updated the race list...as always, tell me if anything needs changing:

Ann, I think the Battleship half is on Nov 7th?? I hope that is still before your WDW trip!

Shirisha, let me know the specifics of your races and I'll add them to our list!

As those of you on FB have seen I've been doing short (2 mile) runs and also biking. Things are going well besides one minor detail.... My bad Achilles does not like my running. For those who don't know or don't remember, I tore it last August. It was only a micro-tear...just had to limp around for a few weeks. And it seemed to have healed and gone away completely. I did the January Half without a peep from it. But then, this spring, suddenly out of the blue (I was barely running) it started to hurt again. :confused3:confused3 I don't get it. But there it is. So yeah, it is hurting and I don't know what the future holds with it so we shall see. I'm just taking it one run at a time. I used KT Tape on it for the first time the other day and that did seem to help, so I'll keep using that. And of coures doing anything else I've learned about to help it.

Oh, my friend and neighbor will be joining me for my W&D trip now! :) She won't be doing any racing that weekend. So we will be together when I am not at the Expo and race. She is planning to come to the after party too! Oh and does anyone else have to laugh at the taste and sip we'll be getting at the party?! I'll be ready to do way more than taste and sip!! :rotfl: I guess we can buy more stuff if we want to? I wonder how much will be open from F&W??

And that reminds me that we Ducks need to plan our meet!! Maybe before or after the race would be the easiest since we'll all be there??? Thoughts anyone?

Joe~I got some Balega Hidden Comfort socks when I bought my new shoes not long ago, and I love them!! They are the first pair of running socks I can truly say I love. They were not cheap, I paid $10 for my pair (I bet I can get them cheaper online...which I will need to do soon).

Riding the Monorail through the CR as a child is so magical, isn't it?! That's great you and Debbie are staying there for a quick summer trip! yay! You are going to so enjoy the summer fireworks!

That's great you're doing the Halloween Mickey 5K. I so wish I could do the Boma meet, I bet that will be fun. I don't land until 8pm though.

Congrats on the weight loss!

Megan~Wow, what a cool run you had on the 2nd! Good luck with your 5K tomorrow!

Augie~Ahhh, I don't like the sound of you being soaked after doing the ToT! I'm hoping it won't be too hot. We took a trip to WDW in Oct in 2007 and it was quite hot though... Well, it will certainly be better than freezing anyway.
Congrats (again? can't remember if I posted on FB) on your 8K!

Dan~I wish the W&D was going to be a "fun run" for me! lol

Emily~I guess I am a wimp too...I think I would pass out if I tried to run in the summer sun! :faint:

Sharon~I don't blame you...the tm is oh so boring. I can't let myself focus on that too much because I have no choice but to use it, but yeah, it really is awful. lol With all your classes it sounds like you are doing well anyway!

Shirisha~Were you able to make it outside this weekend? I remember feeling intimidated when I first ran outside. Pretty soon that goes away though. :)
Hang in there with the PF...I don't have advice, but I know all too well what it's like to deal with issues. ugh.

I suffered from PF a few years back. It started after a trip to WDW when I wore my crocs the entire time. Never again! Anyway, I feel your pain. Make sure to stretch your calves really well. Here's a link to some great stretches for PF:

I have been a huge slacker. I haven't run in over two weeks. :sad2: But, I am getting on my treadmill tomorrow and getting back to it. Just a combination of being busy and migraines keeping me off (well, that and a lack of motivation). I really miss it and feel horrible lately. It's amazing how you can notice such a difference when you stop eating healthy and working out.

My husband returns from his deployment in a few weeks and so my first outside run looms closer. :thumbsup2

And that reminds me that we Ducks need to plan our meet!! Maybe before or after the race would be the easiest since we'll all be there??? Thoughts anyone?

Since I'm a walker, so much slower than most of you, Dh and I probably won't be doing the After Party, cuz I figure it will be almost over by the time I finish :).
However, I would love to meet 'the Duckies', so whatever is planned, I will try to attend.

By mile 8, some walkers will be passing me...I'll see you there! :rotfl:

How about we plan a meet for before the race?? Maybe we could meet at tent "D" (for Ducks) or something? (Oh wait, can you get to the meet tents before the race?) Meet, take a pic, and head to the corrals? It doesn't have to be long, I know we all have a race to get to. lol

Let's see, the race begins at 10pm, what time will you all want to get into your corrals? That would help determine a meet time. I've only done the one Disney race so far, and we entered our corral at about 5:45. So we had ~15 minutes before our corral started to move. That was fine, although this time I want to get near the front of my corral. So I'm thinking maybe 20-30 min before start I'll want to get in there.

Tell us your thoughts and plans W&Ders!

.

Yep, the Battleship 1/2 marathon is November 7th. :) We head for WDW on the 9th, so it will be a good "treat" for me to enjoy fun time at WDW after the run.

For a meet and greet why don't we plan on meeting up for a lunch somewhere on Saturday. This will probably be my last big meal before the race or we all could probably meet up for a light dinner before the race.

SamSam- I have plenty of friends who are walking the race, I wouldn't worry about the party being over. From what I hear from them the party starts when the gun goes off. Plus the after party goes on till 3am. Not that I will be out until 3am, but it does go on that long.

Joe,

Are you doing the pasta dinner for the AF half? If so do you want to plan a meet up?

Dan
